Wow!

Suz, I love these new additions to your wardrobe, you look stunning. Casual glam is the perfect descriptor for your style - a bit dressier than what is likely the norm but not overdressed. The top is gorgeous, the perfect moody floral for you.

I've updated my beach and summer weekend wardrobe - with a swim cover-up, raffia hat and short set. They have worked out well as they have already been worn on a beach holiday and were breezy but also provided protection from the sun. A blue swimsuit would be good. I just hate buying bathers and have been wearing my existing bathers that are about 5 years old.

That velvet blouse is a real showstopper and I’ll bet you already have lots of outfits in mind for those lilac trousers. Your wardrobe is so smart, functional and beautiful. I remember that burgundy coat from back in the day and it still looks really, really good. The color is sumptuous and works so well with the rest of your wardrobe — this is how it’s done!

Gingko, Jenni, thank you!

Brooklyn, glad to know your summer closet is working well for you. No surprise, considering the thought you put into it!

The dark velvet top is perhaps moodier than my usual, yes. It replaces/ upgrades a plain navy velvet top, though, so is not too far out of the ballpark, apart from the print, which is indeed a change. The lilac is more an outgrowth-extension. I've been slowly building a lilac capsule, which also works with my blues, whites, and burgundies. Some of these "lilacs" are closer to pinks, but they work together tonally, for the most part. I've also been adding to my true reds. Just expanding the blue/white/silver palette a bit!

It's sort of hard to tell from the photos, but these items all include some lilac or lilac-adjacent colour, like very cool pink (or in the case of the burgundies, work extremely well with lilac). They cross seasons, some are summer items and some are fall/winter/early spring.

A bit late here but I love this outfit on you Suz! I don’t think I’ve seen you wear this palette before. It’s quite different from the crisp silvers and blues that I associate with you (you do wear them very well of course). But this is noticeably more soft and moody. I think you were looking for a bit of a change? Fabulous on you. The pants were a real find.

I’m just coasting along into Summer. I think I’m pretty set and not looking for anything in particular.

Great outfit! I especially love the dark floral top.
My winter wardrobe is a bit dull, although I often feel a bit more subdued in winter so it fits that mood all right. I don’t think I will give up my winter black. I brighten up in Spring.

@ Suz - FWIW, I wore those green pleather crops 38 times in the course of 3 years, and they were in excellent condition when I passed them on.

Don’t get me wrong, I love black. It’s a great foil for bright colours, and navy+black is my all time favourite colour combo.

Carla, your experiments with those green pants really made them seem like a practical and attractive option to me. So thank you!

Minimalist closets of soothing neutrals are fab -- for those who don't crave dopamine dressing! I had purchased so much navy, grey, and white in the past four years because it was virtually all that has been available other than earth tones and black (and sometimes, not even navy, grey, or white were options.) Most of the remaining colour in my closet was from items older than that, like my red coat. (Which is in perfect shape, and i am not griping about it...but many of my tops and sweaters were far from perfect.) That's why I'm putting the push on colour and texture now.

Sounds like you are joining Lisa in the movement away from black, having added quite a lot of it of late.

I hope you have as much fun with those lilac pleather pants as I’ve had with my green ones! Due to weight loss, I’ve had to replace all bottoms. I picked up black pants with a better/softer fabrication than the green - so comfortable! - but not as much fun.

Having noticed a default to black additions to my closet recently, I’ve decided to put the brakes on and commit to colour, pattern, texture, and shine for new purchases going forward. I’m contemplating a faux fur vest and a pair of red pants!

Though I appreciate the beauty of minimalist capsules made up of soothing neutrals, it’s just not my style. Small closet, but maximal style?

Those Rich textures and colors look so wonderful on you! Anthropologie is a great place to duplicate, because if you find a style you like, they will almost always repeat it the next season in different colors or patterns. That is why I have five of their Carys sweaters and four pairs of Pilcro Wanderer pants.

Karie, it's so true that travel can bring out the neutral in us! I try to add a colourful item or two (or some stripes) that works with the other items, also.

I hope you've enjoyed all your trips!

The top is really versatile, working with many of my bottoms, both colours and neutrals.

Beautiful outfit, and happy birthday to your daughter!
That blouse is gorgeous and goes so well with the pleather crops. And isn’t it wonderful when older items fall into place with newer items in our wardrobe?
I am trying to add more color in my wardrobe, but it’s not been easy for me. What is easy when doing a lot of traveling is to bring a suitcase full of neutrals that all mix and match. I do try to throw in a colorful item or two, though.

Nuancedream, I remember some of your outfits with those orange pants. They look amazing on you! Orange can be a neutral, too, just like lilac! :) (Thanks, unfrumped!)

cat2, thanks. It sounds as if you are making real progress in moving from your office-ready closet to one that feels more authentic and organic to your post-office life. Brava!

Robin, news to me -- but Anthro has a whole petites section that is pretty large! Not every item comes in petite but a surprising number do. These are both regular size because I typically do better with that, even though I'm on the cusp of petite.

Sally, that green, in particular -- and the different textures you've purchased it in -- really add pizzazz to your summer closet. The green is so vibrant and flattering on you. I think those first palazzo pants you bought also brought new colour and texture (as well as a new silhouette) into the closet.

Katerina, I think of you as someone who has definitely worked pattern and texture into your closet in a big way -- with the scarf collection, for sure, but also with the various bags, suede items, etc. I do agree that it seems more difficult to add shine and texture and seems to take more patience, or maybe just attention to those elements in a new way.

Star, thank you! It was very comfy to wear.

Super fab! That soft lilac can be a “ near neutral” and quiet luxury in some combinations, or stand out as more cheeky in others. I expect will be much more versatile than one might think of “ purple pants”!

What a fun outfit! I have slowly been reaping the benefits of a focused palette and holding out for murkier prints. I have been slowly wearing out the preppier elements of my wardrobe (white, navy, stripes) and this summer and fall the mix started feeling more like me. It’s fun to move the dial like you have!

My wardrobe is full of colours and I add patters mainly in scarves. Texture, however, is a whole other matter. I try to add items to add texture and shine, but I find it much more difficult than color. So far, I have added leather
and suede pants and jackets and some knits. Also satin trousers.

Wow Suz this is a fantastic outfit. I am late because of time zones but I do want to tell you that I love the darker top with these pants, such a fab contrast. These pants work so well with your silver hair. You really have fab style.

Thanks, all! We had a really nice dinner with the now adult child. Or should I say near adult? Those of you with children or godchildren or nephews or nieces of this age will likely get it!

And I felt perfectly comfy and well attired in my outfit. I really like casual glam.

Irina, your palette of mostly darks with neutrals is brilliant on you! I love your pops of colour in the summer capsule, too, but in winter, your items always radiate a luxe vibe, even if casual. The quality of your bags, your jewellery, and your lovely hair all add to the elegance.

Sharan, who knew that pleather pants could be anyone's "meant to be"? I think both Angie and Carla have really given me the push I needed on that front. Seeing how they have worn theirs in so many different ways has been inspiring. Other forum members, too!

Avicenna, yes, I have worn the cream boots with the pants already and they are fab as well! Probably better, and definitely a better bookend to my hair. But I wanted to try the black tonight to see how they'd feel as an alternative, especially with the dark top. With lighter tops I will certainly default ot cream. Or burgundy/ red if I can find some.

Bonnie, that is interesting. I think you do have some shine in buttons, etc. You definitely have some beautifully textured and patterned items and as for colour, you are a queen!

Dee, as usual, we seem to have approached our closets in a similar way -- lots of interest from our patterned tops and scarves, but less attention to texture and shine. And more restricted colours, as a rule. Which is not necessarily a bad thing -- it's a kind of signature French style, as you have pointed out in previous posts. But if we're getting bored, colour, texture, shine are possibly elements to consider adding in, at least that was my theory, and it does seem to help.

Slim Cat, I love the idea of blue/ green/ white or cream tops! Angie has a cashmere sweater from Talbots that combines those colours. I also love the idea of jeans in patterns for you (or for myself, for that matter!) I used to have plaid jeans and adored them. Those are long gone, but maybe it's something to consider adding in again.

Lisa, your experiments with colour and different neutrals are inspiring us all! It has been fun to see the evolution of your style in a new climate. You have really figured out how to juxtapose more structured dressy items (such as bags) with casual items like jeans, plaid shirts, hoodies, etc. to make the whole outfit feel uniquely practical yet intentionally stylish. Interesting that you are now also phasing out the black. It can take a while, but is not so hard when navy is widely available.

Thank you, Angie, Colour Empress! You definitely have colour, shine, pattern, and texture in your closet! And in every outfit!

Jaime, I had no idea the collar of the coat is on trend now but I have always adored it. It can be folded down, too, in two ways...it's really an amazing coat. Lightweight, warm, and beautifully made. There's cashmere, wool, and alpaca in the blend. I'm never giving it up.

Love your new dark floral top! Works well with new pants!
No one would be surprised that I stay completely opposite - just recently I thought that I should stay true to myself and not deviate from my favorite neutral/dark colors. I added a pair of black patent leather loafers, a shiny black small Bao Bao crossbody and dainty silver jewelry. It will do for shine. Texture comes from a navy denim bag, cow hide flats in dark leopard print, and sunglasses in chunky plastic frame. I don’t feel I need to increase the zing in my dark & neutral closet. What I need is more opportunities to wear my things.

That outfit is all kinds of wonderful on you, Suz. This color palette is just dreamy with your skin, hair, and eyes. I never would have guessed lilac pleather pants could look like they were meant to be yours.

Wonderful combination of textures, colours and shine. You’ve definitely succeeded in bringing all these elements harmoniously together in this one fab outfit and I just love the glamour of the cranberry coat with high neckline collar.on you. What a great purchase.

Most of the zing in my outfits usually comes from the patterns in my tops or scarves that I wear. I don’t think I’ve experimented enough with textures and theres not much shine in my outfits either. Hmm.. looks like theres some work to be done in these areas. However, I did try expanding my colour game recently by wearing a bright green Columbia jacket on my last trip which was surprisingly fun to wear and worked really well with most of my wardrobe.
