I have been thinking about this and the category I make this mistake with is accessories - scarves, hats, jewelry, belts. I have more mistakes here than in the rest of the closet.

I do have occasion wear under ten wears but I keep it and look after it. Mostly it does not date too much and could be fun for others to wear and borrow.

I have four never-worn items: a navy faux fur stole from Sole Society that was an Angie pic a few years ago; a pair of dark caramel suede legging-like trousers, and two veIvet skirts, one burgundy, one navy. I may hang on to the stole but think it’s time to let go of the trousers. They fit fine, but I just never reach for them. I will definitely purge the skirts.

I also have two never-worn S/S items from last year that I simply never got around to wearing, but certainly plan to. I bought them both knowing they would never be in heavy rotation. One is a pair of houndstooth patterned long shorts; the other is a lovely lilac midi trench. The latter will never get much wear here, but I do love it.

I have more than a few items that don’t get a lot of wear, and 95% of them are dresses & skirts. (The 5% are velvet items, mainly tops. I love them, and will never get rid of them.) I need to make some serious decisions about the dresses. They fit, they’re lovely, but I don’t need them. The dresses I am keeping all fall into one of three categories—midi length shirt dresses, which can be worn multiple ways; sweater dresses, which I typically wear over pants; and dresses with an interesting shape in one way or another, with draping, folding and/or padding.

The two skirts I’m keeping are crystal-pleated midis, lined, in olive and a wonderful reddish brown.

When I write out what I wear and don’t wear like this, it becomes clear to me what I should do, both in terms of purging, and in terms of future buying. I see my preferences! Thanks so much for asking the question, Synne!!

so I picked a few finds that have been languishing in my closet....what I realize is that I love semi-dressy clothing, but my life is pretty casual. I wear jeans + cardigan/blazer + tee to work 4+ days of the week and tend to run around a lot and get messy, so my nicer items get worn much less. going out/art openings mostly.

My feet are really picky and I have a lot of shoes that I am hesitant to wear because I am unsure of the long term comfort level, (past the initial try on--and they are good there)

1. NAS blazer. Love this one, but reach for my black blazers that are more casual..sleeves are a bit long, need to get used to more boxy wear again....wore a similar blazer tons in the 90s
2. faux leather leggings. purchased with the idea of wearing a longer top/tunic textured jacket & boots
3. Gold loafers. the crappy rainy fall this year (80 days-little sun!) had me wearing boots nearly every day instead.
4. Dansko sandals: been wearing lower/padded sandals/sneakers much more
5. Teal wool coat. Beautiful color and cut. I even have a fur collar to attach for a little glam "Saks Potts" vibe. Again, been wearing waterproof outerwear mostly for the last 4 months instead
6. Halter Dress. Amazing print. very sensual--maybe too body con? I have not had an opportunity to wear yet--but purchased it since the drape and cut was one I like but I dont often find that fits.....
7. Majesty Peacoat. Honestly a gorgeous coat. Color is amazing. But I tend to reach for leather or darker coats instead when I need a casual/non rainy outerwear

I am actually good about wearing most things a few times. However, the zipper sticks on this dress and I’ve never worn it. I shouldn’t have kept it but I convinced myself I could have my husband do it up. I have it earmarked for donation once the weather is nicer (I don’t like to send out of season stuff).

TheCat - It is an embarrassingly high number, without question. I have a couple of the pieces posted on sale sites, but the ones that FIT, and I feel good in, I have stored away. Some of the skirts are orphaned and need tops (besides tshirts), the heeled shoes and blazers are just too dressy for my day-to-day life. I do like them and like that I have something to wear should an event call for it, I just need to spend the time to make outfits with favorite pieces before I purge much more.

I have a lovely open front Ivory crepe blazer that I bought from Macy's last year when I was sure that I was going to get a new and more elevated job. Well, I didn't get the position, and 6 months later I don't mind all that much, but I still haven't worn the blazer. It is lighter weight, so it's possible I might wear it this summer. I also have a beautiful Ivory necklace that I bought from Etsy. It just turned out to be a little too heavy for me. I keep thinking i will wear it anyway., i really should just fall on my sword and ask the designer to remove a strand of beads for me.

And I think this speaks to my mixed feelings about wearing ivory!

nemosmom, that is A LOT of unworn items! Make a specified list of all those items and keep it on your phone or at another place where you can refer to it daily. Make an honest effort to wear each of those items, in particular in spring, fall, and at special occasions. If you find that an item isn't right for your style and needs, try to sell it, or at least donate it. And do analyze your mistakes, in order to avoid repeating them. (It seems that you have already started doing so, as you realize that you have purchased items for a past life style.)

The above approach has helped me a lot. It always feels good to have edited my closet and to know that it contains only items that suit my present needs and life style and that I actually like to wear.

Synne, I hope a similar approach will be of benefit to you.

Generally, I warmly recommend a total closet edit 2-4 times a year. Purge items that no longer suit you and your life style. And make a list of items you want and need for the upcoming seasons. It all becomes easier and less time-consuming for each time you do it!

Not worn, and maybe never to be-A lightweight red scarf that I went back and forth about I might take a bleach pen to it.
New purchase that I will wear in Spring-a lightweight lighter blue open cardigan.

However I do own several items with 5 or less wears. Wedding attire, a few fancy sleeveless tops that necessitate a very lightweight sweater to cover my arms, a warm wool jacket worn to funerals in cold weather for the burial, a fun pair of embroidered high top sneakers that don’t work well with my printed tops that I’ll try wearing this spring, but I usually wear sandals as soon as it warms up enough. Thanks for this question-First time I realized about the fancy sneakers not being worn because I wear sandals instead.

I don’t feel so bad about these purchases-except the scarf because I had my suspicions about it-as so many items in my closet get worn until they wear out.

I have a pair of silver ECCO sneakers that I have not worn but plan to. They are duplicates when the identical pair I wear now gets to worn out.
I have 4 summer pieces, a white linen dress and 3 pair of summer weight wide crops in yellow, white and light tan. They are waiting for when there is not below freezing temperatures and several inches of snow on the ground. Dressing right now requires grippy snow boots and warm sweaters. Tomorrow I plan to wear a red sweater dress that was bought at the end of the season last year’s day spent months unworn in the closet with a new pair of white Cole Haan snow boots that have been workhorses now in late winter ( we will possibly have 3-4 months of late winter). Snow is quite common in May.
My unworn pieces were usually bought at deep discount off season. I am happy to have them when their time comes.
I also have some unworn thrifted velvet pieces ( long skirt, shell and beaded black lacy jacket) They will be worn for a winter event. I am glad that I have them waiting in the wings.

Only one item. It seems to have made its way off my lists. It is a fringed cream crochet vest thing I bought with sales goggles for I think $44 in 2016. I had seen and liked it through its season that year but didn’t like the price for the quality, then caved when it was on sale. I was doing a few 20s and 70s looks then which I still like, and the fringe fitted in. But soon after I saw a similar tan one I preferred and so never wore the first. 70s and Safari is still, or again, trending so maybe I can find a way to wear it. It probably only suits a few weeks of weather may be one issue.
I have very few wears on some high heeled shoes. I took one pair with 4 wears to the consignment shop today. Still don’t know if they will accept them, I left 5 things and they turned their nose up at another 4. They have to accept all 5 now or else I will have to take them back again.

Wow, this is a topic that resonates! Glad I'm not the only one with unworn pieces. As I have been closet-editing recently, it's *shocking* how much new, unworn stuff I have in the lingerie, jeans, shoes and tops categories. I'm talking tags on new. I need to do a better job of returning, don't you think?

LisaP -- I hope you keep those bow slides, they are gorgeous!

Synne -- The sheer black shirt is beautiful and so on trend.

MsMary -- I love the dress! That 20s theme party is in your future I predict.

Suz/LisaP -- The red jacket is great. It's a must-own.

DonnaF -- the red dress looks perfect for the theater, opera or ballet. Not just a wedding. And it's quite timeless looking.

Janet -- I have a sheath dress like yours, in black. It's got the same neck and shoulder line. I got mine at Zara in 2013 and wear it a lot, still, if I can fit into it (I'm not there yet). I'd keep it, because it's so timeless.

Nothing. Like Jenn and Carla, I wear it all. If I make a poor purchase (and that does sometimes happen!) I will edit it out quite quickly.

But...I *do* have infrequently worn items. Here they are:

1. J Crew Collection silk shirt. It's gorgeous colours for me and a fun quirky pattern. I've worn it twice. But I don't like the silk twill weave. I find it uncomfortable and unbreathable (for silk). I think I'm going to let it go. Bought on significant sale so not a huge loss. OTOH, what I learned from this: STOP BUYING WITH SALES GOGGLES, SUZ. And...buy for the season you are entering, not for the one you are leaving! Unless you are 100% sure you are buying an essential or a statement that will last a really long time. ;)

2. BR dress. Wore it about 10 times last winter but not at all this winter. I prefer a midi-length. I think I'm going to have to let it go.

3. Consignment purchase -- Snow Queen coat. Dressy and fun...I have worn it about 10 times so far (2 winters). I'll keep it -- it is a fun piece to have.

4. BR military jacket. Purchased for presentations and the like -- worn about 10 times so far. Again, it has a function. I'll keep it.

5. Rag and Bone gilet. I ADORE this very expensive piece. I will keep it forever, I swear. It came out rarely in its first few years due to my climate. It works much better in the current climate but I still don't wear it a ton. Mainly worn in autumn.

6. Club Monaco silk dress -- such a fun party dress. Too snug right now. I hope it fits again. I love wearing it. I just don't get many occasions for it.

7. Halogen skirt -- this is a fun dressy piece for me, too, that I an also dress down a bit. I really like it -- just don't have many opportunities for it.

8. Linen cocktail dress -- adore this but rarely get to wear. Have worn it probably 10 times in its lifetime.

Most of these items qualify as "occasion" wear for me and I don't get too many dressy occasions. Still, I need to own these items for the times I do need to dress up and I am not at all sorry I purchased. I just hang onto them. They'll have their moment!

Nothing! Except for a duplicate pair of Birkenstocks that are waiting for summer and a pair of lightweight trousers that are waiting for spring. I'm definitely team wear.

I'm kinda bad here. I have quite a few things that have only been worn once or twice - which is about the same as never having been worn at all. My weaknesses are transitional season pieces : spring and fall, because those seasons are SO short and unpredictable here. Also - anything bought too far ahead of a season rarely works out for me (ahem, NAS) . Below are two pair of shoes bought for a holiday cocktail party and not worn. Not worried it though as I really like both and know that the suede mules will come out for spring . The BR wide cropped jeans - never loved the look enough to want to wear them again. Too tricky to style flatteringly. Camisole is gorgeous but too sexy and revealing. Nowhere to wear it. Aritizia blazer is garbage quality but I wore it once , maybe twice and they are very inflexible with returns. I'll likely donate it.

All very interesting replies here, thanks fabbers. Big kudos to you who have few or NO unworn items. Aspirational indeed.

Going through my Finds, these are currently unworn. I know I have [many] unworn thrifted coats and jackets, not shown in Finds. I think I have adopted quite a collectors mentality here. (The Nice-Coat Hoarder!)

Some are fairly new purchases, and given benefit of the doubt, will probably be worn when the weather allows (all the lightweight shoes I have accumulated. For fantasy weather??!). Some items, like the faux fur jacket has been gifted (second-hand). Some has fit issues, discovered too late to return.

If I where to count things only worn ONCE, my list would be much longer. And that is terrible!!!

I bought the red dress to wear to a March wedding and the silver shoes to go with the dress. DH was out of town for Valentines Day and we decided we’re going to pass on the 10 hour drive to the wedding. So I may not wear the dress until the July and August weddings we will be attending—unless there’s a heat wave on those evenings.

The earrings are a bit fussy and I have had them for a few years. I should probably see if DD would be interested in them.

The socks are a few years old. Whenever I have worn the pants and jeans that I bought them for, I pass over them for a different pair.

I think I have only worn the scarf once. I find it a bit bulky for my neck and short stature. It’s a problem I find with a lot of scarves these days.

Not shown here is a navy shirt/blouse from Uniqlo. I thought it would be so useful for work and something I could wear outside work. I’m not sure that I don’t reach for it because it is Too Serious and Too Classic or that the temperature has to be Just Right because it is polyester.

I guess the good news is that I don’t buy orphans.

@Kerry - the Kut leather sweater thingy (waterfall jacket?) with the black cropped trousers (with a black or white T or tank or cami under) and the hot pink sandals would be such a fab date night outfit! When the weather gets a little nicer, mind you! I like how the trousers are styled in the product photos - with pointy toe flats, and sneakers.

@msmaven - the longer length of that jacket looks to be one of the on trend silhouettes Angie posted in her blog this week. Hopefully it will see some love in the future.

My only unworn items are some cotton sweaters and a skirt. I bought them within the last couple of weeks in anticipation of spring. Might be wearing a couple of them next week, as weather predicted to be in high 70s.

I do have a red velvet blazer bought at the 2018 NAS that I have only worn 2-3 times. I only remember 2 for sure. I wish I had returned it--something about it not quite right for me. I have hopes that now that I have lost a little weight I might find it better fitting.

I do have a few things

- a blazer and belt added from Dress for Success sales in 2018
- a dress I bought that is in the donate pile with no wears.
- two jackets added thrifting in February ( one is being donated as the fit is wrong)
- one top and two pairs of jeans added last week.

I don’t really count the new additions - it is too warm to wear them at the moment but I was shopping off my Wishlist.

The belt is a classic so I am sure it will be worn. The three jackets were impulse buys out of season. None are really perfect but two might work.

Right now I have a black cotton poplin dress that I’m thinking of taking to Mexico on our vacation next month. It was very pricey so not sure if I’ll commit or not - tags still on ... 45-day return window.

There’s nothing else in my closet I’ve never worn but a few that have been worn too infrequently ... Hilary Radley trench coat that I love but is a bit snug ... and in the same vein a Danier pink leather moto.

I also have a Kut from the Kloth black faux leather sweater thingy from NAS a few years ago AND a black short sleeved dress. Each of those items have only been worn 2-3 times.

The last item is a pair of Franco Sarto suede pink sandals that I wore once two summers ago for an event.

Oh and as I go through my finds I see a pair of black wide leg pants I wore once last fall. I like them but am not sure the bootie I paired them with has a high enough shaft but I don’t want to spend on a proper supporting act.

Oh gosh and this blush faux fur thingy ...

Yikes that’s a lot of things ... anyone have any suggestions?
