I love that jacket so much! I have thought about shooting jeans and selling them, but I'm holding off on any business ventures until the house is finished. Decision fatigue, cash flow problems...
Thank you for bringing that jacket to my attention

Rachylou, pinky brown or grey would be awesome (or even both for different purposes). Both would go well with my new color palette AND my fall/winter 'dirty' looking colors, so they're definitely winners! I'm definitely going to check out target jeans. Thank you!

Bijou, I really like my skinnier, but some of the new styles of booties (side cut-out in place of gores, high shaft) would look really cool with something cropped, and with some other cuts & lengths. I may look for rachylou'so grey suggestions in skinny, and a pink/brown/blush in a trendier cut/length maybe

I think you should go for whatever cut of jeans that you like to wear. If you like to wear skinny jeans, they are a classic style, and timeless in the same way that bootcut and boyfriend jeans are. I am happily wearing skinny jeans as well as cropped flares and bootcuts.

Thrift shops jeans may help you get a head start on getting your jeans appropriately distressed for your style. The RATE look that you have looks totally intentional and very stylish. This is a look that I wish I could pull off, but it does not ring true for me.

Anybody remember the season where Chanel - think it was Chanel - did 'Chimney Sweep'? Tellin' y'all, it was dystopian heaven Your shotgun scarf totally is Chanel worthy.

What about pinky brown or grey? Or olive? I get my jeans at Target. I like Target jeans - albeit I don't actually like jeans. My digestive system would be happier in denim overalls for sure.

Fashiontern, I'm in North Central Texas now, but yeah, Northeast Texas was unique. At least now I'm within a reasonable drive of Dallas if I really want a city (and I'm really needing some city time LOL)

And I've been thinking about ways to make extra cash. I'll have to look at that when I'm not exhausted.

Cindy, I bet Sisi's right that you could sell these. The jeans brand someone mentioned above is sold by the dozen for under $150. Why not do a lot of that size and see how they sell? https://diamantejeans.com/jeans/sweet-look-jeans/

And if you're in East Texas, you have my sympathy/empathy, from across the Gulf. I've lived in the panhandle and in Austin, but only driven through the piney woods.

Sisi, I work at a produce stand. I'll get some pics today and post in off-topic when I get home. (Work only has satellite internet, with slow speeds and data caps, so I don't want to get the boss throttled this early in the month)

I definitely like the frayed waistband you're talking about, Firecracker; and I'll certainly check out that Sweet Look brand on Amazon, Suzanne. Joy, you're on to something--we're building a house and there will be cabinets to stain, which could be fun with a pair of those painter's pants :-)
Fashiontern, yes! That's exactly the kind of landscape/scenery I find so inspiring. Everything seems dusty and faded and dry (although dry is a pipe dream in this part of Texas, GAH the humidity!)

Sal, I forgot about the Gap, which is silly since I was gifted a sweater at Christmas that introduced me to their tall sizes. I'm not tall, but I apparently have long limbs or something.

Thank you all for the suggestions and ideas, it's definitely giving me inspiration

Cindy, you are too funny! The story of your husband shooting your jeans made me laugh! And the pet pig! Oh please show a picture. I am not sure I have understood what is your job, but I agree with others that thrifted pants would be a good idea. What about camo pants? The scarf you made is a piece of art. Seriously, you could create your own clothes brand.

I went browsing through the Nordstrom site (searching under denim, filtered by "distressed") and through Anthropologie's denim selections. At least at Anthro, overalls seem to be a thing, at least a fringe trend. So I wonder about getting a pair of "real" work overalls and distressing them. You could belt them at the waist, for a fun and kind of sexy or flattering look.
What I was looking for initially was a pair of distressed jeans I saw somewhere in person (and I think I tried them on), which had the waistband ripped off. It was kind of a cool effect. I think you could do this kind of distressing to a pair of Levi's 501s or similar old-school cut.

Interestingly (?), a poster here asked about finding the brand Sweet Look jeans, and Angie mentioned that they might be on Amazon. Curious, I checked it out, and they seem to be mostly heavily distressed, very affordable, and come in some unusual styles that might be fun because they're not super common. If I needed jeans, I'd consider giving them a try...
https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=n.....look+jeans

I know a lot of YLFers are not into the distressing thing, and I wasn't either much at first, but it grew on me quickly and I proudly continue to sport it.

What Sal said about thrifting. You can find things already distressed. My favorite jeans are from the thrift store...pre broken in. You can chop off legs to the length you want or whatever. Tossing them in a hot washer with dark colors that may bleed on them, wear them to garden and paint the fence.

I would either go for somewhere like the Gap and then distress them, or try second hand/thrifting I agree that straight leg is best, in a proper denim without too much stretch.

Of course you might get some pre distressed, there are still plenty around here in NZ with ripped knees or holes etc..

You mean like these colors? These are from when my ex & I visited his family in Ogadin. I just dug them out at my parents' house, along with hundreds of other pix that I need to sort through. There are far too many from far too long ago to interest anyone here irl. But why not torment new friends on the internet with them? The white & yellow skirt was the most amazing garment I've ever seen. Yards and yards of fabric. They draped it over a rope they held up, then scrunched it all together, so it's sort of like crinolines. It was amazingly not hot at all.

Skinny will look like you're trying to follow a trend, even as it's ending/when it's dead. And that's not the kind of dead you like. I'd say to go classic straight-leg, maybe even 501s. The Vince utility pants Angie posted might not be too skinny--hard to tell. Whatever you get, if you shotgun-distress them, I want to see pictures! :)

P.s. I don't think that's RATE. It's RAOP--rough all over the place.

I make no secret of the fact that I often like to wear clothes that look like they got dragged through the desert by a camel (or through the Andes by a llama). I find inspiration for an outfit in a picture of a rusty old car rotting in the middle of a desert. While I have adopted a lighter/brighter color palette of late (think sun-bleached desert Southwest colors) and less distressing, I still like some things RATE, and will probably gravitate towards my rough& tumble stuff during cooler weather.

My dilemma is this: I've gained weight, and a favorite pair of jeans had to be donated to the rag bag. They were cream colored skinnies from Cato that didn't stay pristine cream colored for long. Instead of getting upset at the stains, I embraced them and hung the jeans on the clothesline for DH to shoot with his shotgun. He got a nice scatter pattern on the knee, and I loved those jeans. I especially loved them for work, where I can wind up with everything from blackberry juice to tomato chunks to mud from the side of the boss's pet pig on me. The random stains from work just added to the character of the jeans.

Sadly, I don't have a picture of the jeans in question, but I do have pictures of a scarf I made for myself that has some serious distressing going on (I had DH & friends use it for target practice) to give y'all an idea of what I'm talking about.

Then there's this sweatshirt that I distressed, really just ageing it by 10 years ago to make it less "normcore" and make me less likely to cry if I snagged it on something out here in the country (country life is hard on clothes).

I'm looking for ideas/inspiration for the replacement jeans. Obviously, I'd start off with non-premium denim because I can't bring myself to shoot holes in a pair of expensive jeans (I do still like normal things sometimes). The step hem idea is appealing, and I think I would like it in a raw edge. I'm just wondering if I want to go with a skinny, or a straight-leg, or some other cut. I also don't know that I want to go with another pair of white/cream denim because eventually they'll just look dingy underneath the RATE-ness. I'm not necessarily concerned with being on-trend with the wash or cut, just wondering if it's maybe time to break out of my skinny jeans rut. If so, doing it with a seriously distressed pair of jeans would be a good way to ease me into a new cut, since distressed/deconstructed is my comfort zone.

So, any suggestions about cut, wash, color, and even length are very welcome. I'm currently open to change, and this is my go-to place to get advice/wisdom regarding fashion and style changes. Thank you all (in advance) for your suggestions!
