If you really love the jeans and they make you feel like a million dollars, then I would do it, Rosie. Consider them a treat to yourself. You're about to embark on a process that's inherently difficult and that can put you on an emotional roller-coaster at times. A fabulous, perfect pair of jeans could be the gift that keeps on giving even when the scale or your brain are letting you down.

This is so fascinating! I never had considered premium jeans as something to instill so much confidence in this way! Now I am DETERMINED to find the right pair, which may mean I will buy that pair again.

Thank you all again!

I've lost 60+ pounds in the last two years (some of it came off fast, some not so fast, and a few of those pounds I've lost more than once!) and here's what worked for me.
I always, ALWAYS had premium denim. Nothing made me feel better about my body than a great fitting pair of jeans. Many times I was able to find them at Buffalo Exchange, clearance racks, or TJMaxx.
After that, I only spent larger amounts on accessories and shoes. The rest of my clothes were all clearance items, dresses (which fit over a wider size range than pants or tops), consigned items, etc.
I just couldn't afford to buy a whole new wardrobe every season in designer or expensive items.
I have sold all of my larger clothing at Buffalo Exchange or passed things on to other people. I'm at the point now where my top sizes probably won't change much anymore so I'm starting to spend more on tops (especially since they're harder for me to find/fit).

Rosie, as I lost weight it was important to feel good in what I was wearing. If you have the time, thrift stores and consignment shops are good places to get pieces that you know you will only fit into for a season or less. You should be able to get quality items (AT, BR, JCrew, etc.) without the prices to go with them. But if you wear jeans a lot, go to Nordstroms and get some you love.

THANK YOU all for your positive, encouraging and wise words. I truly appreciate all of the encouragement and I couldn't agree with everything said more. I will remember everything you all wrote for the next time I have this concern. Ironically, I went to Nordstrom to return the top and tried the jeans on again in the dressing room. They just didn't look quite as fab as I recalled, so they got returned. It is highly possible I will purchase them again, as this was the second purchase and return!

I feel bad that people put so much thought into responding, but please know that your wisdom has REALLY helped me feel good about the situation and the other new purchases I have made. What an incredible bunch of ladies!

That belt looks really cool!

Invisibelt, where were you 3 years ago when I so desperately needed you?

Rosie, everyone else said it so well. Celebrate your body as it is now and feel good about what you've accomplished. I lost some significant weight a few years ago, and there were some jeans that I tried to have altered, but they just did not fit my body right anymore. But when I dropped them off at the thrift shop, I actually felt really good about it because they were still great jeans, and I felt strongly that some other woman who was maybe struggling financially was going to stumble across them and have that wonderful, delighted moment of the great thrift store find.

I don't know how you gain or lose weight Rosie, but you may find the jeans fit well in the hips but need periodic adjustments in the waist as you lose. That could extend their life longer than you think.

Rosie, absolutely no question at all for me....It is 100% worth it to have wardrobe options that make you feel fabulous immediately. I know a lot of my weight problems stem from emotional eating (exhibit a, the past month), and feeling unattractive in my clothes absolutely exaserbates all those negative tendencies. This makes me eat more, which derails my weight loss efforts, which leads to feelings of inadequacy and failure, and the cycle continues. Feeling confident in my outfits is empowering for me and makes me feel like I'm taking some degree of control over my appearance. This in turn helps me feel motivated most of the time.
Besides, clothes that fit well at the beginning of your weight loss journey become excellent indicators of your progress as the pounds come off. Sometimes you'll even find that comfortable clothes become even more so as you continue to lose weight.
Good luck on this effort, Rosie. It's not easy, but you have lots of support available to you here as I'm sure you know.

I once joked I was going on a Mariah Carey diet--that I would wear clothes that were two sizes too small to just embarrass myself into losing weight. But honestly, I think that it is important to have some go to items that you love when you are in the weight loss process. Also, I found that jeans actually fit me at a number of different sizes. My most recent weight loss was one of about 10 pounds (not insignificant at five feet tall) and my Joe's Jeans still fit me well. So I would keep the jeans, and just vow to reward yourself with a new pair when you hit your weight loss goal.

Yes- I think it's important to have things that fit and you feel fab in through every stage of weight loss. I was also going to suggest re-selling them when they no longer fit. Also- now that you know what fits, you might be able to find them on discount somewhere or ebay.

Rosie I have lost about 10kg since February, some of the clothes before weight loss I am still wearing, luckily only work clothes but they are about to be replaced too. I only recently splashed out and brought new jeans, only because I didnt realise until I starting posting pics on YLF how terrible my older jeans looked! Yes you should feel fab no matter what you wear, if they feel good and fit you now enjoy them while you can. Maybe you are able to adjust them when you do lose some weight? Or on sell them if you only have a bit of wear out of them you might be able to get a good price for them even being second hand?

I totally agree, Amanda! I think it is just the $$ and not being sure how long it will last... but the flip side is getting rid of/selling on eBay several other pairs of not fab jeans.

So, I just bought a pair of CJ Cookie Johnson Skinny Jeans. Right now they fit me really well and are so incredibly comfortable. I have two pairs of Old Navy skinnies I never wear because they don't fit me right at all.

I've never spent this much on a pair of jeans and I've just really committed to getting in shape and losing some weight. In your experience, was it good having something you felt great in starting out, even if it didn't last more than a month or two and was not cheap? Due to the amount of stretch in these, I just don't know how long they will work and I have not found another pair like them.

Thanks for the advice.
