Xtabay's suggestion of checking out the Sundance catalogue is a great idea. Garnet Hill may have some pretty things for you, too. And Anthropologie, J. Jill, maybe even Chico's? I would look for something comfortable in a favorite color or pattern, with lots of movement in the skirt, then add Sundance-type jewelry in silver, turquoise or amber. Depending on the location of the wedding, October can be chilly, so you may need to factor in a jacket, cardigan, or shawl for warmth. For the sake of the ladies' legs, cutting up some inexpensive fabric to layer over the hay bales might be a nice idea for the bride to consider . . . sounds like a fun wedding!

I'd posted earlier this summer about a gingham dress I'm wearing to a casual wedding but I think gingham might be a little too on-the-nose for the farm. Maybe something more loosely western themed, like a paisley-ish print?

And of course I'd pair said dress with a denim jacket!

My first purchase for this wedding would be a good sized folding, thin towel, the kind that is usually sold for camping or backpacking. Takes up almost no room and perfect for discretely laying over the top and front side of a hay bale.

Have fun! Can't wait to see where you land with an outfit.

Cowboy boots will work with lots of dress styles but you don't have to wear them -- a wedge would be an alternative for this kind of setting.

I love the idea of gingham! But it ought to be something you'll enjoy and feel good in.

As a Texan, I can attest that cowboy boots are extremely versatile. I think the ideal proportion would be a dress that hits around the knee area. I've worn boots with both casual and formal dresses...have fun with it!

Depends on the weather but you might need Wellies, instead of cowboy boots! At least when walking in the pasture.
I agree a longer skirt of substantial material like denim would be a good choice.

Here's what I wore to a barn wedding last year. There were lots of western boots, even among the female guests. I didn't wear any, but mainly because it was so hot.

Have a look at the dresses in the Sundance collection at http://www.sundancecatalog.com I think probably they all could be worn with cowboy boots. I'll bet Anthropologie has some good ones, too. I hope you'll post your look!

And watch out where you step in that cow pasture!!!

Cowboy boots work with a lot of skirt/ dress styles especially a bit below kneee. I also agree you could wear another style of bootie such as a summery tan, cognac, gray, distressed leather etc. I say that because cowboy boots coukd be pricey and not used much again, unless you borrow some. You can also wear them with more of a tube skirt( again, a bit of length) and a looser top. Or if you did denim, I'd do tailored just below knee for length and liven up the top or accessories for casual/ western/party.
The boots and dress/ skirt look is often a fall look, so you might google for pics and translate that to summer colors and fabrics.
I like a longer fuller skirt for sitting on straw bales!
These cow pasture wedding venues are becoming very popular, but they challenge wedding guest sometimes!

Debbie, hay bales are itchy and can be damp and buggy. I would consider a denim mini skirt, maybe with a plaid shirt. Probably any boots or booties would work with the theme. A paid or gingham dress worn over skinny jeans might be another idea. I would not want bare skin in contact with those bales, especially outside. Hay bales were common seating at our RenFest in the fall. Most people remained standing rather than sit on them. You might even consider taking inconspicuous folding chairs. You could always mention that you need some back support if anyone says anything.

Well, gingham is having a moment. (Actually, didn't someone else post a gingham dress as a possible wedding-guest outfit recently?)

I'm thinking of that Judy Garland movie where they put on a show in a barn. Off the shoulder blouses, ruffles on top or on the skirt. Prairie looks.

Sorry, I am sleep deprived and I am free associating, also saw too many poofy gingham tops at Winners today.

My niece is marrying her long time boyfriend in Oct. the wedding will be outside on their property in the country. The guest will be sitting on hay bales. I talked to my sister today and she said the dress code is casual but she is thinking dresses and cowboy boots because the wedding is in the middle of the cow pasture. Does anyone have an ideas on what kind of dress to wear with cowboy boots. This is out of my wheelhouse. I need to ask her tomorrow what time the wedding is.

Any ideas will be appreciated.
ETA first picture cowboy boots. Second and Third pictures fringed booties I have that I love wearing.
