I also agree you could wear another style of bootie such as a summery tan, cognac, gray, distressed leather etc. I say that because cowboy boots coukd be pricey and not used much again, unless you borrow some. You can also wear them with more of a tube skirt( again, a bit of length) and a looser top. I would consider a denim mini skirt, maybe with a plaid shirt. Probably any boots or booties would work with the theme. A paid or gingham dress worn over skinny jeans might be another idea. I would not want bare skin in contact with those bales, especially outside. Hay bales were common seating at our RenFest in the fall. Most people remained standing rather than sit on them. You might even consider taking inconspicuous folding chairs.
