Popping in with one more thought. Sometimes when I bike in the rain, I wear my helmet *over* my hood. So, if you go down a jacket size, but then have trouble pulling the hood up over your helmet, consider wearing your hood under your helmet. You might have to loosen the straps a bit, but it works pretty well, honestly.

Don't buy crinkly jackets. They will drive you crazy. It is now hard to find water proof without the crinkle. I finally found one that did not crinkle at REI. It was white and their brand. I have used it for years. And so has DDIL and is great for travel.

I agree that it might be worth trying a size down, but I’d also say it’s better to err on the side of roomier (within reason) with Gore-Tex jackets. If the XS turns out a bit snug anywhere, I’d stick with the S. It’s nice to have room for your bulkiest layers underneath, and if the shell is too fitted you lose airflow and feel clammier. Make sure to try the smaller size on your bike too — handlebar reach can require a longer sleeve and roomier shoulder fit than you might want for daily life.

Sharan and Suz, thank you so much for your thoughts on sizing, and I will order an XS this afternoon and see how it goes (done and ordered!). Sharan, that Castelli cap is a happy surprise and referencing the photos you mentioned, a small will work in case the XS doesn’t when it gets here. “Nothing to be done about that…” on the “unfashionable” nature of jackets for outdoors and biking really cracked me up, Suz. Thank you for making me laugh.

Bijou, yes, it’s going to be fun and thanks for compliment on the jumpsuit.

I agree with Sharan re the jackets. You should try the XS to compare. They will feel crinkly and unfashionable -- nothing to be done about that, really. They're gear. But some gear is slightly more attractive than other gear and fit still matters! A puffer vest will pack down really small under most jackets so I wouldn't worry too much about that aspect.

I was watching for an update! (I seem to have missed the first one!) The jackets do look a little large on you in some of the photos. I think the Patagonia looks best and not too terribly large, especially in photos 11 and 21. If it comes in an XS, I think it would be worth comparing. I find it is easy to overestimate the amount of room needed for layering underneath a jacket, and I suspect the XS would work fine.

The Castelli hat looks great!

I wear mine walking in the winter, too, not just for biking. Maybe you'll get more use out of yours, too.

Also, my REI jacket that I like so much is stiff like that, too. Getting a small enough size to keep it a bit streamlined (but not super aero like a race fit in bike clothes) will help alleviate the boxy feel.

Vicki, the 2.5-layer has to do with construction of the water-resistant yet breathable fabric; visibly, it's a single layer of fabric, unlined.

Wow! I am so grateful for all this AMAZING AND PRACTICAL information and this is why I LOVE YLF and the people who make it so!

Rebekaphoto and BrieN,
I am pleased to get your Antora feedback from each of you and I’ve ordered both jackets to see how they feel and fit. BrieN, I appreciate your fit experience and, at 5’3”, I likely would have a problem with Patagonia’s straight cut, as well. I am also short-waisted. We'll see and I'll post a few photos when they arrive.

Firecracker (Sharan), oh my gosh, you opened me up to some things I hadn’t even thought about like the constricting head-turning movement with an attached hood. Sounds like you found the perfect one at REI a few years ago for all these reasons. I’m also glad you mentioned the socks, because I have a pair of REI socks that are so comfortable thickness-wise, or is it thinness-wise, as they are the perfect weight. I believe they are Wrightsock and they are wool and do not itch which is essential. It seems you and Suz like the Smartwool, and I’m guessing they don’t itch. I’m not sure I understand 2.5-layer but it’s probably for warmth. Thank you so much for your wonderful links. They really helped and I am definitely buying the cap with the bill that covers the ears, as that is the one part of my body that really is sensitive to cold. Huge thanks on this one and the link.

Karie, I did exactly what you suggested and have both the North Face and Patagonia Storm 10 coming. I appreciate your confirmation that you like these as I had no idea where to start.

Suz, thank you for the solid advice and I’m so sorry to hear you were hit by a car and trust that you are back in tiptop shape, but what a horrible experience. Wearable visibility with reflective gear is now on my list. I want to be seen from all angles! Hugs. Another fan of Smartwool, I see, and I will check these out at REI as I only have the Wrightsock and have been pleased.

LaPed, yes, I ordered both and am happy you have an excellent review on the Pata Storm10. As I said to Firecracker (Sharan), I’m not sure I understand the 2.5-layer vs. 3-layer. The Houdini got rave reviews on the travel YouTube video I watched so I guess it serves a purpose. I will definitely post tulip photos!

Runcarla, wow, I had no idea you were so involved in cycling and at THAT level (Vicki, note to self, to get back in the YLF conversation after all these years.), so your input is very helpful. Padded cycling gloves! Why didn’t I think of that!? I am generally cold so these I will buy. Thank you for sharing your Castelli gloves brand. I have small hands and lately I notice a little aching below my thumbs (aging) so I want them for comfort, also, and to keep my hands warm. Another brilliant idea by you: Zip-lock baggies! I love these, in general, for so many non-kitchen uses (in my waist pack belt bag, I’ll store a mask, tissues, etc. or even lipstick, dental floss, etc.)

Phoebe, since I run cold, I may be in luck if the underarm zips aren’t a feature on these.

Angie, I’m so excited to be breathing the air of the country that you lived in! I’ll post some photos.

athenaak, down the road I may buy the Houdini, with its excellent reviews, since this is the jacket that steered me to the others I’m researching.

Joy, that’s a smart idea to leave the umbrella at home as I will attempt to do carry-on and don’t want it confiscated. I have a foldable clear Tote that I love (I am a fan of seeing through an umbrella).

sarah, such good advice and thank you, and I took a short ride around my neighborhood and today I’ll wear my padded bike shorts, as even on this short ride, I felt the “saddle sore” time on the bike, so practice, I must. Sorry to hear about your mishap with the car, too, and hope all is okay.

Laura, yes, take a look at the bike shorts at Club Ride Apparel, among others, as the reviews sold me.

JAileen, Seems I’ll have to dress like a brightly-colored tulip! LOL. I’ve seen those hi viz vests and nice to know they’re available at Lowes. You and Suz are vest twins.

MsMary, this is IMPORTANT information, and why didn’t the tour information say this, LOL!! I’m thinking…Spring…California Springtime…cool, but warms up. Thank you, because I DO NOT LIKE BEING COLD. Cycling leg and arm warmers? Never heard of them, but I’m on it! So much for my carry-on luggage idea maybe.

Angie, ha! You would know. I can stay behind the small pack of eight in our group or get in the “follow van” and be toasty, like sitting on the bench and eating good food with you.

Firecracker (Sharan), happy to hear they don’t take up much space. Now, I may be back to my carry-on desires again.

Wow, how fun! You've gotten great advice, so I would just add that you'll definitely want to get out and do a good bit of cycling before your trip. I always find that I get "saddle sore" if I haven't biked in awhile (e.g., in the spring after a long winter), even when I am wearing padded bike shorts. It goes away after a few decent bike trips, but you'll want to to be prepared for the possibility. I also echo Suz's suggestion about high-visibility gear. I've been hit by a car twice, so if you have an option to get brightly colored gear, that can be helpful. Have a great time.

For any trip to Europe in the spring, a waterproof jacket and luggage are important buy an umbrella once you get there. Every store will have some. I learned the hard way that folded umbrella in luggage will guarantee a time consuming search by officials who are concerned by the umbrella’s metal arms.

The Houdini is a water-resistant windbreaker but not a true waterproof rain jacket. It will keep you dry in a drizzle or short rain only. I wear mine all the time for running, and will pack it for travel as a just-in-case, but wouldn’t bring it if I know it’s highly likely to rain.

What a fabulous trip you are planning!

I’m used to being wet while cycling and find there really isn’t anything that will keep you really dry. If you’re not getting wet from the outside (rain) you are probably working up a sweat and getting wet from the inside! Technical fabrics and wool that dry quickly, or - more importantly - stay warm when wet are your best bets. Long leggings can be worn over padded shorts, so don’t buy limited use padded long tights - just the shorts. Also, warm padded cycling gloves - with full fingers! Cold hands are no fun and padding vs handlebars is nice. I treasure my Castelli gloves!

Not sure if this is ‘normal’ in the Netherlands, but when I was there (Rotterdam - Amsterdam) for a triathlon (September 2017) it was windy!

Note: bring some small size Freezer quality zip-lock baggies for cellphone and wallet or cards vs the wet since you might not be able to trust pockets.

What an awesome trip! Of these three, I’d definitely pick the Pata Storm10 (I actually have the exact same one!). It’s a 3-layer waterproof breathable shell, meaning it will be more breathable and less clammy than the Antora, which is a 2-layer. Also more durable, especially considering how light it is. And Pata has better environmental practices than most when it comes to manufacturing waterproof fabrics, which can be full of nasty chemicals. At the sale price, it’s a total steal. The Houdini is a great jacket, I use mine all the time, but it’s definitely a windbreaker and not suitable for all-day rain. Have fun and please share photos of the tulips!!

How exciting, Vicki! You are a lucky duck!

I agree with those who suggest ordering a few styles and trying them on with the layers you intend to wear. Also, I agree with Sharan about the hood. It is both good to have -- and better if stowable. Like her, I tend to wear a little wool cap under my helmet (mine doesn't have a brim, but it is similar). I also like merino base layers when I am biking. Mine are from Icebreaker, and I have different weights, depending on the expected temps. Ditto for wool socks, and mine are also Smartwool.

They do not mention reflective gear, but as someone who was hit by a car while on my bike, I am always a fan of high visibility, day and night.

Have a wonderful time!

The first two - North Face and Patagonia Storm 10 are both excellent choices. Maybe get both and keep the one that fits you best. Do they have hoods? I always like my gear jackets to have a hood in case of rain or snow.

Vicki, your trip sounds so fun! I agree with you that your two top picks sound more waterproof and useful for this trip. A windbreaker won't be that helpful against rain if you're biking. I would prefer a jacket with a stowable hood, though. I don't like to cycle with a hood, because it just catches wind and billows out like a parachute. And I feel a little constricted about turning my head if I'm trying to wear it up over or under the helmet. I have the perfect rain jacket from REI, but I got it a few years ago and don't see it on their website now--darn! I wear it biking, walking, & hiking.

To keep rain off my glasses, I like wearing a cycling cap under my helmet--the little brim really helps. For cold weather, I have this one, which covers my ears. A lot of cyclists I know also like to wear a helmet cover in the rain (it's kind of like a shower cap), though I don't bother, and I don't feel my head gets too soaked, as I always have a cap on.

I also really like lightweight wool baselayer tees for cycling. A couple of my favorites are by Velocio (merino mesh baselayer in short sleeve or long sleeve) and NoBull (blended merino long sleeve tee). The NoBull one works as streetwear for me, too, although it does have the very visible branding on the back near the neck. Usually I'm wearing something over it.

I also wear wool socks when I'm cycling, year round; most of mine are Smartwool. And a pair of lightweight wool gloves that can be used as liners inside other gloves or on their own can be useful, too.

Edited to add: Showers Pass is a brand that a lot of cyclists I know wear in Seattle. Here's one that has a removable hood. The 2.5-layer construction is what my REI jacket has.

I agree with your assessment that the Antora and Storm 10 look the most waterproof/technical. For me a lot of it is fit - at 5’4” how the hood fits can make it or break it for me. And for example Patagonia is often cut really straight which doesn’t work for me. I’m always in the camp of trying a few before deciding. I don’t own either coat though - nor one I would suggest to you. Both companies make great gear.

The Antora is popular here in the PNW. I have a similar Northface (a 3-way) jacket and have been happy with the actual waterproof-ness of the fabric!

The Storm also looks good. I would consider do you need a chest pocket? color availability? I would order both if you can to compare, especially in the shoulders.

Third ETA: Sticking with the Patagonia Storm 10 in Small as the XS seemed too tight at the bottom and would feel constricting overall if layered. Many thanks for your input over these past few weeks. xo

Second ETA: Added my bike helmet to the jacket and immediately I felt the Patagonia has a better feel and fit for the occasion and I had a puffer vest underneath the jacket FWIW. Still have to get to REI for one additional look.

ETA: Well, the Patagonia and The North Face jackets arrived and I’m not sure how I’m feeling about them or if I should visit an REI store and start over again. Perhaps, this is telling me that I am not used to this type of outerwear and how it is supposed to look and feel.

Frankly, they feel somewhat large on me, boxy and crinkly stiff IYKWIM and not very fashionable, lol. Having said that, the size may be needed, because I want to put a puffer vest underneath. These are smalls. Attaching photos of both the Patagonia Storm 10 and the Antora from The North Face. I think my other major concern is it doesn’t feel like these jackets would actually keep me warm and the jacket must not take up space and be packable.

Original post: My friend and I are going on a one-week bike tour in the Netherlands in mid-April (will post separately and OT about a possible YLF Meetup if any of you live in the area and/or Belgium as we plan to be there for a few days, as well). The tour leader said a "waterproof" jacket is essential. I have looked online at three and only read the reviews so I have not tried them on or seen them IRL. One is from The North Face and the other two are from Patagonia, the Patagonia Houdini mentioned in a YouTube video about how to pack for ten days using a carry-on, which I am going to try to do.

I'm inclined to look at TNF Antora or the Patagonia Storm 10, because these are actually waterproof and would keep me warm in case of wind or inclement weather. The Houdini seems more like a windbreaker. I think I am in between an extra small and a small, so I’m learning toward getting a small in case I want to layer with a puffer vest. Do any of you have recommendations or do you have knowledge and experience with these three:

The North Face Women's Antora Jacket:
https://www.rei.com/product/14.....ket-womens

FWIW, I've included a photo of the padded bike shorts I bought. They are the Montcham padded bike shorts from Club Ride Apparel and the reviews were excellent. I'm also showing the suggested packing list sent to me. Now, I have to start taking few short bike rides around the neighborhood, because I haven't been on a bike in a few years. Thank you for your help with the jackets.
