Thank you for all the great suggestions! I wish I could buy them all.

For a start, I ordered two jackets from H&M. A burgundy parka and a black trench. I can't seem to get the Find function to work so here are the links. I was shopping with a friend a few weeks ago and found this faux fur jacket from Hollister (we were there looking for jeans for her teen) that I'm putting on my Xmas list. It's not something I would buy for myself but it would make a fun gift.

I really want to try the Halogen knit moto that several people linked to but I'm trying to resist another short jacket.

I second the burgundy idea. I can't do a find, but the picture is here http://www.londonfog.com/women.....-hood.html

Last winter I figured out I had no stylish coats, just gear. I live in the Sierra Nevada mountains and we get moderately cold but usually not bone chilling. I have been on a spree. The first Find is my black London Fog trench with fun buckles. It is quite warm and heavy. I have seen it in red or tan. If it came in burgundy or navy, I'd buy it in heartbeat even though I don't really need the dressiness often.

(I love the geographical diversity of the forum!)
I think I would be tempted by a frock coat in a lighter colour. I got this one from Zara, I don't wear it very often, but when I do I usually get a complement on the colour.
The other coat I enjoy wearing, but don't do often is the navy one below with the embroidered flowers. Something about it appeals to me to wear with jeans. But again, I don't wear it often, but I do enjoy wearing it when I get chance.
I like the blush pink suggestions by Natalie. And Angie's MaxMara's cape looks gorgeous.

I like Angie's suggestion of something long, light and tailored, which would seem to work well in your climate.

Have you considered a sleeveless coat? Could be overkill for "high desert" conditions, but for casual use I like to have something I can layer over other jackets in cooler weather, or on its own when it's mild.

Sara, I was trying to figure out why I have coats and you don't, when our weather is virtually the same. I realized I wear mine mostly at night when we're going out. If we go downtown we have to park and walk, and at night it's always windy between the buildings, and when it drops down to the 40s or lower, I get cold. During the day if I'm running errands, I'll wear a jacket or even just a vest, not a coat. Of course in December and January it's very cold and I generally need a coat even during the day.

I agree that your coats seem out of sync with your other clothes which are so fab. You don't exactly need more but you need different ones. I would add a jewel toned puffer mid weight and a neutral trench- then I think with your black and khaki you will be covered. For casual sports and kid wrangling puffers are perfect - easy to clean too!!

I see Angie posted a long blazer. You might be able to use a long blazer as outerwear in your climate.

I also think casual jackets are difficult. The TNF nano puff is a great shape.
You could also try some sort of longer gearish rain jacket that has that nice feminine shape.

SW prof - Yay! Some one else from Albuquerque! I've never been much for vests but I recently bought one this fall (not pictured) thinking it would be good for mild weather casual events soccer games.

Texstyle- I love the idea of burgundy. I'm going to see what I can find.

White or off white is probably not practical for me. Too many occasions to get dirty with three kids. It would be a nice change from black though.

Do you like corduroy or velvet or faux fur accents? It's been over a decade since I've been to Albuquerque, but most of the suggestions here seem pretty out of place for my recollection of Albuquerque. I think that something with a rich texture in a deep jewel tones and moderate amount of quilting would be great. The earthy toned garments you have shown also don't seem snuggly enough. You need more feminine lines and details to make things feel dressy.

As far as the coat competing with your pants, I guess my thought is that one jewel tones and one earth toned should have you covered, assuming that the rest of your wardrobe is reasonably coherent.

If you only want one color then a the off white suggested by SW prof would work. But you have to be prepared for emergency cleaning sessions. I've managed two white washable coats before, and I am messy and generally kind of pokey about laundry. I just bought a pale pearl gray one, and I still quite like the look of a very light colored coat.

Greetings, Sara! I'm another resident of Albuquerque feeling in need of a coat capsule update. I'd second what Angie and others are suggesting - mid-thigh or knee-length and lightweight. Your #6 looks a lot like what I'm wearing this week, and you have #1 for the really cold days, but you (and I) could use something that's coat-length (warmer than a jacket) and nice enough to feel dressed for work rather than weekend. I'm considering this prAna "long jacket" (very lightweight) which is quite neutral but not black. But what I wore the most last winter was pretty much the opposite - a down vest. 90% of the time it's enough to throw on to go from car to store, and it fits over anything. Maybe not real stylish but super convenient.

If you wear a lot of olive I might suggest adding a burgundy longer jacket to your collection. It pairs well with olive, navy, gray and even brown. This is not exactly what I have, but I do have a similar fleece coat and wear it when it's colder. I also have an olive field jacket, an olive/brown heathered jacket, a navy peacoat and several other light jackets and blazers that I wear just every once in a while. I've never enjoyed a light colored coat for whatever reason so I stick with deeper colors - but I still do like variety. I also have a few fleece hoodies that are heavy enough to be coats on very casual days if it's not too cold. And I have a rain type jacket that is very warm so I rarely have a need for it unless traveling to a cold place.

ETA: A couple more burgundy coats

I had a trench with a zip out wool liner and it was just not warm enough. I'd pick up my son, maybe stop at the grocery store on the way home, and I froze. It might have helped if I had had boots, but the office was kind of warm, so my outfits couldn't be very warm. I ended up getting a long camel hair coat. It's lightweight, but super warm. I bought a scarf and gloves to go with it. The color worked because I wore almost all earth tones then.

I'm a little afraid of color in coats. I'm worried that the coat will clash with my outfits and its use will be limited. I really like my quilted olive jacket but it frequently clashes with what I'm wearing. How do other people get around that? More options? Just don't worry about it?

I understand that longer unlined coats like a man's overcoat are popular in France right now worn casually with jeans. That may be a good coat for you.. Look at J Crew stadium coats and light weight puffers. Sweater coats may work for your climate. They are not very warm if it is windy. An excellent trench coat with removable thinsilate liner could be ideal for your winter.

Thanks for all the help. You are really helping clarify things in my mind.

Krishnidoux - I think you've hit a key point - mid-season coats that aren't ideal but artificially fill a hole. I think that's the perfect description.

You all are absolutely right about the lack of color. And you're right that I'm not particularly excited about any of them (except the black wool coat - I love that coat). But I'm not excited about coats in general. Angie posts roundups of coats and I think "Pretty", but not "Pretty. I want".

A lightweight trench is definitely going on my list. I think that will fill that light dressy hole. I'll have to think a little more about the casual coat. Goldenpig has some great suggestions that I plan to investigate.

JAileen - If I have to sit still outside for long periods of time, like for a sports game, when it's really cold, I don't have the right outerwear. I usually wear the olive quilted coat because it's the warmest with layers underneath, a scarf, hat, gloves, and a blanket. If it's really, really cold, I wear my ski jacket.

You don't seem excited about any of these. Here in Michigan we have to wear coats a lot and I feel so much better if I feel good in my coat.

Ah, the problem with mid-season coats...! It's so easy to accumulate a lot of them, none ideal, but atificially filling a wardrobe hole and preventing us from getting what we need exactly.

Your problem isn't one of wardrobe per say, it's one of definition: what you call "coat". These pics feature casual toppers, not coats. Yet you use them as such. Could it be that you have a mental block about coats lol? (It takes one to know one...).

Despite the array of non-dressy, sporty jackets hogging your closet, what you describe needing looks more like what GP suggested above. Living in a relatively warmer climate you are in luck: those light trenches are usually not as expensive as the ones required in Canada, and are often on sale. One strategy could be to start off in a cheaper store like Zara or Talbots (sales rack) and buy the shape you would never get (for example, felt trench in a lighter shade). See if you are tempted to reach for it in the morning, and if so, you've got your answer.

Of course you will have to play around with hand bags and boots and maybe gloves.

Agree. Certainly about 8, and maybe Dad's denim jacket can go in a "museum section" ( that's what I'm calling mine, with my wedding dress and some historical items) rather than the working closet. It hadn't occurred to me earlier but I now think delurked is correct that these coats don't seem much like you?

No expert on jacket suggestions, just a general comment. Your outerwear collection and your normal WIWs seem like they belong to two different people. You have a lot of light, color, fit, and vibrancy in your daily wardrobe. The outerwear seems very dark and more unstructured in comparison. That’s why I like GPs suggestions with the details, definition, and pops of color. Maybe something that sings to you, not just something utilitarian could be a goal. Just my two cents.

Based on your own words, you might consider moving along 3 & 8.

Here's some more suggestions--will throw them out there and see if any of them might work for you.
Longer trench coat or dressy wool coat in a lighter color, maybe white or pink
Coat with interesting architectural details--peplum or cocoon or fit and flare
Leather or knit moto in a non-black color
Drapey long cardigan non black
Puffer! Puffer! Puffer! I third the suggestion for puffers! I have three (silver, electric blue and white) and wear them all the time even when it's 50-60 degrees!

I must run colder than you. We have similar temps yet I have a couple of puffers. Just today I was at a high school soccer playoff game. I wore my lightweight North Face puffer along with wind pants and various accessories, and I froze. And winter birding here requires very warm clothes.

Anyway, I think a long wool coat might fill a hole. Maybe something like this boiled wool coat.

Hmm. They seem the same shape - hip length and on the boxy side. Maybe a longer coat, maybe with waist definition to mix it up?

But hey. A Puffy is great for 20F. A Puffy is great for 60F! Hehe

... a lightweight one...

I think you need one knee-length jacket like the cocoon jacket from JCrew and another fun shape.

So few? So many, according to me. I have 2 coats and one warm jacket. I don't understand your Fahrenheit temps as we use Celsius. I would first consider ditching the ones you hardly wear? Then reassess what one new one may go with the most outfits.
