I will try to remember this, DD is only 6 and already has strong opinions on what she will wear so we are starting the negotiations for school now. I would also suggest LandsEnd, H&M (online is so much easier to shop than in store especially for the basics) and American Apparel (very plain and basic) . I also noticed this weekend all the sporting goods stores (Dick's, Sports Authority) are having major clearances and have a lot of sporty tees and sweats. It might be a good idea if she finds something she likes to double up on that so you don't have the laundry issues. When my DD decided she would only wear My Little Pony undies I bought 2 10 packs so there are always a fresh pair ready even if I only wash once a week.

My girls are nearly 8 and very tall. I am not looking forward to the tension that I anticipate in a couple years when they show more preferences as well as the struggle with modesty which is very important to me and DH.

Someone mentioned consignment and I suggest hitting thrift stores. Not because I suggest you buy all used but because, if it is a neat organized store, you may be able to quickly flip through dozens of brands and find the perfect shape and cut that tics off all her preferences. Then you can google/ebay to find the best source of that top and buy multiples. I have wound up with a few items I love in brands that I never knew about. It's a benefit of thrifting that a lot of folks wouldn't consider, because you are exposed to so many brands and style eras in one rack. Good luck!

Wow. Thanks for your name checking thorough response cciele! TRF is slightly cheaper and stocks the younger trend stuff. I dress from it and I'm in my 30s but as I say, a lot of my students shop there too.

Thanks for the kind words-yeah, I grew out of the awkward phase, shed a lot of weight and became much easier to shop for. I wasn't 100% happy in my skin until fairly recently though. Still, I think a lot of people are like that.

Good luck and definitely don't forget the accessories!

Looks like I am not alone Go moms! I am well-armed with a list of places to check, thanks to you all. I really appreciate everyone's input! Will let you know if I find something that works.

Sarah -- Thanks for the link! Fit looks good but neck may be a bit low. Will check out other Target offerings!

Meredith -- Hm, I will have find a Loft near me to check out. And another vote for Target!

Suz -- Yes, I agree that dressing "sexy" would be harder to deal with. Ugh. The tween fashions I see these days, ugh again. And shopping for two generations (3 including yourself) must be very interesting! My DD wore a dress once (piano recital). Hasn't expressed an interest in wearing one again...

DonnaF -- Hm, I must have missed the crew neck ones -- the ones I saw were too low. I will have to look again!

Echo -- I hear ya and feel your pain!

Elpgal -- Ooh, I really like the look of those. And Blue Canoe, I totally forgot about that brand, which is funny because I have several pieces of loungewear/yoga wear from them! Will have to check it out.

Sparks -- Haven't looked at the TRF range (is that like a juniors line for Zara?) -- thanks for the pointer! Hope shopping is a bit easier for you now.

jackiec - I think it can be hard for boys and girls, if the kids are adamant about what they wear but can't pick out anything. It's easier when kids don't care, some care but can articulate what they want.

Inge - Is Massimo Dutti available in the U.S. I hear a lot of YLFers raving about it!

crutcher - Hm, no I haven't tried consignment stores. Great idea. And yes, I would like her to tell me what she likes, which would be easier to work with than what she doesn't like...

Glory -- Ahhh... commiserating right there with you. And I will definitely put Costco on my list! Joe Fresh, I wonder if that is Canadian-only?

Elly -- Ah, another store I haven't thought of. Thanks, the tee sounds like it might fit the bill!

Neelie -- What is it with that age? I am in the U.S., so TJ Maxx could work. Haven't been there in awhile -- maybe it's time to go back :)

carambola -- Good idea! Let's see if that works.

E -- I'll show her Threadless and maybe something will pop up. She did talk about getting a Lil Bub tee, so there's that...

Laurinda -- Heh, I mentioned that most people need to alter their clothes to get the exact fit they like. Even though she's been sewing for a few years, she claims to not be good at sewing clothes -- although she has made a tee, dresses and skirts before! Maybe I can start her with a simple alteration.

Rae -- Oooh, another good suggestion. Will check it out!

Rachylou -- She hates stripes. Not sure about the layering -- that's a thought!

Marin -- Another vote for Target! I will definitely put that shirt on my list to check out when I go to Target.

Angie -- More Target And Athleta, another one I hadn't considered -- thanks! Interesting point about focusing attention away from clothes. Basically, I want her to have enough shirts to last through laundry day -- last time all three of the shirts she wears were dirty, so we had a big struggle getting out of the house because she didn't want to wear anything else! She does like to fiddle with her hair, hmm...

Cathy, I haven't read the comments because I'm on my phone. But try Lands End, Eddie Bauer, Athleta and Target.

Also, clearly I know nothing about raising kids. I wonder though if focusing attention away from clothes and onto hair, shoes and nails is a fun idea.

I have had good luck with the basic Target Cherokee ultimate t. Basic tee, not boyish or boxy, not tight. They have held up really well. My kids are much younger and are on the slim side so I can't vouch for sizing. Our store has a lot of different colors, v-neck, and crew that are not shown online. Good luck!

I think Suz's suggestions of Land's End and LL Bean are brilliant. I think they could be just the ticket. Shaped but not bodycon tight.

How does DD feel about stripes? Or wear shirts over more fitted tees? That can be a fun, kicky look that's not too revealing.

Madewell? I have a few of their tees, and they are cut wide enough to not touch the body, yet they drape nicely enough that they aren't boxy.

Just a wild idea here, but since DD has strong opinions maybe she would like to try sewing a custom T shirt with her choice of fabric? T-shirts are simple and satisfying projects.

Altering the side seams or bottom hem of an existing T-shirt is another straight-forward sewing possibility.

This is such an interesting thread. My 11YO DD will only wear boys Tshirts (likes the high neck, loose fit, longer sleeves) and Roots sweat pants (boys cut, girls are too short waisted). I thought I was the only one with these struggles. Anything remotely dressy like going to a restaurant is a struggle to find something she will wear. She hates anything clingy that touches her skin, low cut, or sleeveless or cap sleeved.

Joe Fresh has tons of Tshirts, and I second the idea of athletic t-shirts. Not sure if you are in Canada or US, but TJ Max or Winners might have some items, but it will take some hunting. Maybe petite lady's will work for her.
Good luck, I totally feel your struggle.

Try Kohl's --- their Sonoma tees. I have one on at the moment and it pretty much fits the bill exactly-- it actually isn't my favorite BECAUSE it fits your daughters' specs too closely (I like a more curvy cut, longer tee). They are inexpensive and they have them every year.

Oh I have this exact same scenario with my youngest DD. Plus she hates to shop.

She will wear yoga pants and some times jeans although she is not a fan of jeans. She likes a plain tshirt, no vnecks or scoop necks. She only wears tshirts, no sweaters, etc. Can't be sheer, patterned etc.
She has one dress - which she picked out and will wear for special occasions. The dress came from H&M and she tried on over 20!
All of her Yoga pants are from costco and are size medium. She has 5 pairs of these.
After mutliple shirt fails we discovered Joe Fresh has several plain styles in the regular department and in the active wear. She now has all of her plain tshirts from there and they are not body con, sheer or boxy. I purchased 6 of these identical ones in various colours.
We were also able to find pajamas and bras at Joe Fresh that worked for her.
She is pretty happy with this wardrobe.

Have you tried consignment stores?...I would do a trial run to some consignment stores in my area a nd see what they are offering...Also, in a totally non threatening way, can you get her interested in teen fashion mags..like Teen Vogue...Maybe if she could define for you what she likes, you would have an easier time finding it..
How about Boden?...American Eagle...perhaps Old Navy...
I can so sympathize with this young lady...I did all my growing in about one year and felt out of place with the teen fashions...If she could just get a feel for her style and then have a little time to grow into it, you would have one happy DD...

Oh that's tough! I don't have girls, but boys aged 11 and 13. They seem to be late bloomers but are definitely in that "in-between" size age. DH does most of their shopping online, and 90% of it comes from the UK. We just received an order yesterday and many of the tops are adult S. They are getting sized out of the youth sizes, but a bit too small for the adult sizes. I can commiserate but I think it would be harder for girls. Good luck

I was a bit like your DD. So hard and I used to find shopping depressing more than anything. In the end I used to spend all my pocket money on bags and shoes and accessories because they always fit! Have you looked at the TRF range at Zara? They're pretty cool clothes and some of their tshirts sound like what you're after. It was where I used to shop. Also do good jeans etc and there's a fair amount of non-sexy in there. Lots of my very conservative students shop there. As do I (still) :S

I am watching this thread with interest. My DD has outgrown children's sizes, but so many women's or junior's sizes have scoop necks or are cut teeny-tiny or are made of clingy, slinky material. My DD is currently happy wearing junior's skorts (flouncy ones) and men's t-shirts. Except I buy the shirts when she is not with me and I don't tell her they are men's shirts! They are bright colours like pink and orange, and because she is tall, they aren't unacceptably long.

But it is really a struggle to find her clothes she likes and wants to wear, and I don't foresee things getting any easier for at least another few years.

Nordstrom Halogen (or was it Caslon?) crew neck short sleeve Ts from the Petite section, probably some on sale now. The all cotton ones should be thicker than anything with rayon. U-neck and V-neck probably hit too low, but their crew necks aren't overly high. I saw the crew neck long sleeve ones are on sale; I think Lisa just bought one, but I know you specified short sleeve.

I hope you hit on something for her. I always try to remind myself to be grateful that my DD does not want to dress overtly "sexy." This would be even harder to deal with, I think. But, honestly -- shopping for clothes with her can be quite an ordeal. I usually psyche myself up by reading YLF and then wait until late at night when I'll make a massive online order for her in the hope that we will keep at least two items!! I also shop for my 90 year old mother...I tell you, it's interesting!! ;)

Kelly's right that some of the larger kids' sized stuff might be too boxy, but some is still worth trying -- or again, the petite ladies' stuff.

The kiddos I work with like Target and I like Aida's suggestion of Urban Outfitters. I also wonder about tees from the Loft. I have some that are more fluid than boxy.

I second the Target recommendation for basic tees. They have different styles and colors online as well. This is one that I like, it is not too tight and is a little nicer than a plain crew neck T-shirt.

lyn - Ah, hadn't thought of ModCloth. I will take a look! We have been bra shopping, but she's pretty much settled with the cami bra style for now (having quickly outgrown the trainer-style bras).

Meredith - well, therein lies part of the problem. She can't articulate what she likes, only what she doesn't like. She just says all the stores we go to don't have anything she likes (Old Navy, GAP, Target, Nordstrom, American Eagle, PacSun, H&M, etc.) :(

Aida - we did hit the Juniors, Athletic and Point of View sections of Nordstrom but didn't find anything. The closest thing we found was the Essential Crew t-shirt from the GAP, but it was too long. She has some t-shirts from Old Navy that are similar in cut that she currently wears, but they don't make that cut anymore Will take a look at UO!

Suz - Thanks for sharing your experience :) I think those might work! Had forgotten about those stores, since I don't shop there. Definitely good to know about the sizing. She can fit some kids 16 still, but they are hard to find in brick&mortar stores.

rabbit - good point about not being interested. She is concerned about appearance to a certain point (likes to brush her hair out, has obvious opinions on what she doesn't like), but she definitely not into fashion, unlike DD#2, who told me she wasn't going shopping with us, otherwise she would "want to buy lots of clothes." Ha! Again, though, I think the adolescent noncommunication is coming into play, with DD#1 shrugging every time I show her a photo.

kkards -- we haven't been to Target in awhile. I'll check back there. We have tried to look at athletic tops, but those tend to be cut closer to the body than she likes.

ummlila -- huh, I didn't know Boden had a juniors line! Definitely some possibilities there. Thank you!

kellygirl -- thanks for chiming in, good to talk to fellow moms that have gone through the same experience We did go to Uniqlo but they didn't have anything she liked. I'll look harder for the dolman sleeve tee -- I think our store (Hillsdale) may not have them anymore!

Gaylene - Hm, J Crew is another store I don't usually shop at that might work. Thanks for the pointer!

Ugh. I SO know how you feel. I was in your place several years ago. I think the best tee shirt is the Uniqlo dolman short sleeve. It's not over-size and it's not slim fitting. It's perfect. I wear a medium and DD who is skinnier than me wears an XS or S. I've attached a picture because I can't find it on line but I was just at Uniqlo and they still have some in basic colors--white, black, charcoal, mint green, lilac and tan. Their supply is dwindling though. (They moved it over to the far left at the VF store.) It looks cropped and weird on the model but it is neither. I also added a picture of what the medium looks like on me.

I don't think you will find much at Nordstrom--if anything. Same goes for LE kids--the larger girl's sizes will be too boxy. Target has some BF style tees in burnout fabrics but they have a pocket. You might be able to find some plain Merona or Mossimo tees at Target. Old Navy used to have plain tees but I haven't been in there lately. I'll chime in if I can think of anything else. Good luck and hang in there!

Well I know you said no patterns, but my daughter (now 14) was still very fond of the Boden Johnnie B juniors line at your daughter's age. http://www.bodenusa.com/en-US/.....thing.html. I preferred the cut of their clothes to US children's clothes, which seemed to go from boxy as kids to overly sexy as teens.

ModCloth is something my daughter still likes. Her BFF, who is 15, sounds like she is similar in size to your daughter except shorter and with smaller feet. She is not a provocative dresser and she likes a lot of the ModCloth stuff.

since she likes yoga pants, have you tried athletic/yoga brands for tops? also i would try target. it's easy to shop, lots of variety in lots of sizes, at prices that if she changes her mind, or out grows something in a few months, you won't break the bank.
