SF - when skinny jeans first came back around years ago, I didn't think I would ever wear. But of course, that changed somewhere along the way. In the last year or two I have moved to having more leg room again. I really like the colors R&B produces.

Greyscale - I will try the pic at waist. I pretty much have one selfie pose, as I find it the most flattering. ;)

Jenni - quite a few years ago where I worked switched from business casual to allowing jeans every day. Prior to wearing them daily for work, I only had a handful of jeans. After the switch, I focused on jeans that would be dark and not too form fitted to still look professional. I often got talls and wore with higher heels or wedges. I have never found all cotton jeans very comfortable, and i like the stretch and other fabric content that's used these days. I am looking for a pair of pants similar to 1 (even if those don't fit again).

JAileen - wearing something all day is the perfect way to evaluate it, and can make the decision to move along much easier.

Janet - I've also got a white and burgundy, plus an olive crop pair.

PS if it makes you feel any better, I just counted and I have 24 pairs of jeans. That includes a couple of pairs of color and prints (burgundy, white, black, houndstooth, plaid), a couple of pairs of cropped styles, and every style from boyfriend to flares to skinnies. But I wear denim pretty much every day from mid-September through mid-May. I could probably stand to get rid of a few more pairs that I haven't been wearing, but it's summer and too hot to bother right now.

I agree with JAileen, and like her suggestion of marking a black dot on the label to remind you that a pair needs to go.

I also agree with Meredith. When you have this many, why keep any that aren't perfect.

I have too many too. I couldn't keep straight which ones annoyed me, such as stretching too much. So after wearing an annoying pair, I put a black dot on the label, so I won't keep putting them away after I washed them.

I did look at the pics much more thoroughly this evening and agree with what you are culling. I hope you can fit the ponte pants again in pic 1, I love them but that's cause they're more my style. The top is beautiful. I am kind of intrigued at how many jeans lots of Fabbers have! I had none between about 1996 when I grew out of my stretch ones from the 80s because I'd had 3 children, and about 2007 when I bought some boot cut/wide legged ones! I currently have 3 pairs which is the most I've been wearing for years. In the past I didn't find them very comfy but the 2 latest pairs have some stretch.

Like Suz, I have 13 or so pairs of jeans in heavy rotation, so you don't have too many jeans as far as I'm concerned! It does sound like you had too many jeans you didn't love, though, so congrats on pruning them.

A trick I learned to evaluate jeans on myself: I try to take the photos from waist height. My usual habit of taking the photo from chest height meant my legs were always foreshortened, and it was hard to tell how the jeans really looked to an observer. These days I skip the mirror and instead prop my iphone on a shelf, put it on the 10-second timer, and pose. It's a little tedious if I don't get a good shot the first time though.

Angie - done.

I mentioned in the NAS post, but I will be looking for a pair of black pants this fall (not jeans) that are slim/straight, but not as legging like as 1. I could really use a pair that is travel friendly.

LisaP - ha ha, it was a task indeed. You are right. I find it quite easy to find jeans I like these days, at many price points. Of course, much trying on is involved, but I feel confident in my ability to find if needed.

I know you understand trying to reduce churn and the constant in, out, replace cycle. I'm committed to reducing this wasteful process for myself, but holding on to unworn items is not the answer. It must be done at the purchase level.

I have nothing to add vis a vis which ones to keep or not. A couple of comments that came to mind here:

1. I have too many pair of jeans too - and really need to sort through them. That was a big job you went through - trying on and photo-ing everything. I think I would rather jump off the roof before I did all of that ;)

2. the one thing that makes it easier to get rid of jeans that aren't great is that they are relatively easy to replace (easy to find lower priced ones that are just as great as higher priced ones, lots of variety in the marketplace et) so keeping anything old and not perfect shouldnt even be a question.

Janet - yes, my comments pretty much tell me the answers.

Suz - I wear jeans the most too. In fact, this year is the first in a very long time I've added casual pants to the rotation, which I'm really enjoying.

Sterling - I also used the "when will I choose this pair over one I like better?" as a way to cull. #7 for example - I like the way it looks, but would choose 8, 14 or 16 instead for more comfort.

Thanks Isabel. Karl Lagerfeld is the brand.

AndiB - apparently, my black skinnies answer is 2. I feel better for having made decisions I'd been putting off.

Texstyle - I would love to crop some for shorts. I did that with my too short capris a few years ago and wear/wore them like crazy. Unfortunately, I like shorts to fit looser than jeans for the most part, and a lot of these are getting ruled out in part for being too small. There are a couple I can try to shorten though. My purchases in the last year will eventually make good shorts too.

This is hard based on the photos which are really a bit dark for me to see. I think I do agree with others in that if the jeans don't *feel* great then go ahead and pass them on, since you have plenty of options that do feel great.

I did this a while back and culled like 8 pair of jeans from my closet. I could likely get rid of at least 3 more pair based on my current preference (even though they fit). I bought some new styles so the older ones got orphaned.

Have you already considered chopping some of these for shorts? Sometimes that can change the whole look and they end up being great shorts!

I do have a hard time when something still fits well and I just don't like it currently as I seem to change my mind often in a year or so. I esp. have a hard time getting rid of my old Levis for some reason. They seem so high quality but a little lower in the rise than I'm wearing right now. That's why my personal holding zone is always crammed full. :-(.

In my ideal world I would have maybe 5 pairs of jeans, all fitting perfectly. As It stands I have a couple dozen, way too many. I need a cull too. My problem is I settle when I buy jeans (well I don't any more) rather than waiting for the perfect fit and finish. I have probably 4 pairs of lighter blue skinnies - only one that I love and wear. And I don't even prefer light wash denim, much prefer dark washes these days. Inspired to cull. I mean, how many pairs of black skinnier does a girl need!

I sympathize with you; it's really hard to cull jeans when you wear them a lot of the time. And from what I can see, I agree with your decisions here.

If it will make you feel any better, I have 13 pair of jeans in rotation. I wear them all year round and wear them more than anything else in my wardrobe, and they are a variety of styles, colours, washes.

In high summer (about 2-3 months here) I don't wear them much in the daytime but still wear them frequently at night -- I have 5 pair that I wear most frequently in those months, including my white jeans.

The rest are more "winter" jeans, and winter is about 9 to 10 months. Sometimes I feel guilty at the number, and of course I do have favourites (that I wear several times per week, every week in season) -- but the fact is, I do wear all of them.

Staysfit, Tanya - I figured I can't be the only person with an over abundance of jeans. Good luck with your future sorting.

Meredith - I agree. I had many folded and out of sight, so I'm glad I gave one more try on. I don't have a goal number, I just know I have some dead weight that I would prefer not to hold onto.

It's interesting with jeans, that some can be very fitted and still have good stretch and comfort while wearing, and others can feel so restrictive.

BC - I've turned to getting rid of excess possessions throughout the whole house, which I do pretty regularly.

LP - thanks. Yes, getting rid of the ones I've mentioned above will make me feel much better. I will try cutoffs for 11 first. I'm not totally sure they'll work that way, but worth a try.

Kerry - I'm not quite ready to let go of 1 and 6 just yet, but now I have a concrete timeline, plus I've shrunk my overly large holding zone.

I think you've done the work by analyzing each pair to create this post. Based on your descriptions I'd let go of 1-6. I have jeans that fit snugger in the leg so only wear with boots, so I'd keep those and reserve for winter season. 10 pairs of jeans seems reasonable, especially if you wear them often. I wear jeans almost daily 8 months of the year and own 12 pair.

I looked at the pics first, then read your comments, and they're totally in line with my observations -- it looks and sounds like you could do without 2,3,4,5. And 11 looks a bit meh, so maybe it is time to make cut offs. I really like your newer embroidered jeans -- cuter and more current than the older pair. Would ditching 4-5 pairs get you down to what feels like a manageable number?

Firstly, a few things. This started as a late night idea that I would try on every pair of jeans one after the other and immediately jot down a few thoughts on them. Dark lighting plus dark clothing does make it tough to see details. The first seven pairs were already folded in a holding zone, but I hadn't been comfortable in getting rid of them without another look. I also have had jeans cycle in and out of favor, so I sometimes need a bit of time to make final cuts. And my weight has fluctuated enough over the years that slightly snug is not out of bounds to fit well later, although too tight on the leg in a skinny jean way isn't going to change.

Skylurker - I greatly appreciate you taking the time to offer specific feedback, and it falls very closely in line with my own thinking.

Letting go of: 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 11

Keep for a few months: 1, 6
If these fit comfortably by early fall, I will bring back into rotation, otherwise, I will move them along.

May have waistband altered: 10
these are kind of loose in the waist, which is why I'm not wearing regularly, but I like them, and would wear them more often with that tweaked.

Get rid of every pair that bothers you, that no longer fits properly, or that you're unsure about. You're not going to wear those pairs on a regular basis, so don't allow them to occupy space in your closet.

I am with Meredith here- whatever doesn't feel right, I would get rid of (based on your comments, that would be 2-6). I went through all the pics meaning to give you feedback one each pair and identify jeans that really did not look good, but could not do that - they all looked good, and the pictures came out a little dark.

Btw, you are brave to tackle this - I am about to do the same today , and I have more jeans than you do - and starting a no-jeans job tomorrow

When I read things like "snug, many years old" and "lower rise than I prefer" and "don't feel my best in..." I wonder why you are keeping those pairs at all. It seems like you should eliminate many of these based on your description alone. How many pairs do you want when the purge is complete? What ratio of more current styles (crops, embroidered, etc). to classics (skinny, boot cut, straight) do you prefer?

Ugh! Tough decisions! It's making me think of my own overly large collection of jeans that I cant seem to thin out. My advice is to use the Marie Kondo method. Put them all in a pile, pick each one up and really think about your first reaction to the jeans. Is it positive or negative? Do you love them, and do they bring you joy, or do they make you feel some other way? Anything that doesn't make you happy should go in the discard pile. In reading your descriptions it looks like there are a lot that should go. Anything scratchy, tight, or that you feel is not working with the rest of your wardrobe should be binned. That's my best suggestion. I need to do it myself, and have the best intentions of doing it by the end of my summer break.
