Ditto what Thistle wrote. Maui is very casual. You might even be able to pick up a few nice things while you are there. If going to Haleakala - it is always colder and windy. My DH and I took blankets from the condo we stayed in. You will need jackets in March if you go to higher elevations (Haleakala or Hana)

Hats, sunscreen, boogie boards, flotation devices (you can rent snorkeling gear), sand toys for the kids you can buy there Downtown Lahaina has both a mall and outlet center.

Enjoy your trip!

I will say Hawaii is MUCH more casual than the mainland.
My husband wore a Hawaiian shirt and khaki swim trunks, and he was considered dressed well enough for anything we did, even nice restaurants.

I went to Maui for my honeymoon in late March.
I would bring:
-2 swimsuits. One to wear, the other to lay out drying
-2 Sarongs - see above
-Flip flops or other water safe sandals. I wore my Tevas
-Lots of sunscreen
- Light cover up if you are in AC. We ate a lot outside on patios, so this was less of an issue, but the AC can be arctic.

I am so excited for you! What a fab vacation!

Thank you, Sal. So wise. As it will be cold and snowy here, I think jeans and a coat will be my flight outfit. I like the idea of white jeans and will shop, if time, for a really comfortable pair. Your list sounds just right.

how exciting!! Based on my similar types of beach holidays I think you need

- Three - four pairs of footwear (one beach appropriate, one more dressy)
- one to two swim wear options and beach cover ups
- five -six tops (from short to long sleeve)
- four bottoms/pants/skirts (one being warmer ie jeans)
- cardigan or jacket for the evening (x2)
- hat, beach bag, sunglasses
- bag suited for outings (backpack or comfy bag)
- maybe a pretty dress for a meal out - or maybe you can just wear a nice top and white jeans with a necklace?

This is based on washing facilities being available and doing one- three washes. When we stay at our cottage I clothes wash every second day so I come home with mostly clean clothes.

Have a brilliant time!!

Absolutely bring warm clothes if you're doing Haleakala at sunrise! It was near freezing (literally... in the 30s) when I was up there in March last year. 70-80 elsewhere on the island. Worth it, but it took a while to thaw out after.

That should be just about peak whale season... keep an eye out any time you can see the ocean!

I hope you have a wonderful time!

Thank you all for your help. You mention things I had not thought of. I don't wear shorts any more and am not allowed to wear sandals or flip flops. I will need to get some water shoes. I do have plastic Croc flats and a pair of silver "jelly" flats and was thinking silver sneakers for shoes. I think we have washing facilities and towels. If not, I will buy them rather than pack any. I have two swim suits and cover-ups.

We will probably go for a nice dinner but still fairly casual as it will be DS's b-day while we are there, but with little ones along it will not to too dressy. DH and I will probably babysit so DS and DDIL can go for dinner. I have 2 rashguards I'll take, and a sun hat. The toddler has red hair and the skin to go with it. Need toddler rash guards. Good idea to get sun block there. All the stuff locally is probably left over from last year.

We will be meeting adventurous DS from Japan who will want us all to dive or snorkel. I need to remember binoculars and some warm things for the top of Haleakala at sunrise. Yes, now I remember it being very cold and people wrapped in hotel blankets.

I need to look for better swim suit cover-ups. They both have black, white and aqua blue in the patterns. It will be the rainy season yet, although I read that most rain happens at night. Should be whales and big waves. DS will want to surf.

I like SarahD8's list. If you have laundry available you could probably scale back the casual bottoms, tops, and sundresses.

I have found I prefer wearing a loose dress (kaftan) vs a pareo as a coverup but I burn very easily so like to be more covered up.

I also pack a swim shirt (rash guard) for sun protection for snorkeling, boating etc.

Have fun. I love Hawaii.

It sounds like a fun trip. There could be rain and it gets cool at night so a cardigan is a good idea. Maui is very casual. There is plenty of shopping centers if you forget anything.

If going carry-on only, may I suggest just buying sunblock there. Ask your air b&b if they have beach towels; that would save a lot of space in your bag as towels are so bulky. If you plan to go up to the top of Haleakala volcano (recommended!) definitely bring a jacket and layers. It has an elevation of around 10,000 ft and can be quite chilly.
And a small pair of binoculars! Whales may still be around in March and could be visible from shore.

I think it's called a sarong or pareu or lavalava or wrap. I have a beach wrap that matches my swimsuit. I also have a kaftan ( Angie calls hers a cover-up) and what I call aqua socks, also known as beach shoes, for any rocks. Would you snorkel? I would. We did in Oahu, it was amazing.

I’d certainly bring more. It depends on your preferences and activities. Sightseeing? Taking kids to the park?
I loved breathable sundresses with sandals and a light wrap, Do you care if you get wet in a brief rain shower?
Sun hat. Toddler and baby mean more clothes-I remember sticky hands and other messes. Unless your swimsuit dries very quickly I’d pack 2. Same with cover-up. Swim shoes-I can’t think of what they are called but if you will be swimming on a rocky beach they are useful.

It is time to think of what to pack for 2 weeks at an AirB&B on the beach, early March, Maui. I need to pack in a carry-on and probably bring a regular sized backpack. Will have the family together so toddler and 5 month old baby. Ideas???? I am willing to shop.
