Last I saw him several months ago he was wearing basketball shorts and a t-shirt. I think his style is pretty basic. Neither parent have much interest in fashion and or style. He does sports, basketball and lacrosse. But his main extracurricular activities are chess and Magic (collectible card game).
Sounds like Kohls, Old Navy and Target will be my best bets. I found the Kohls there.
Sparky I will send you a PM with my email address for the friends and family discount.

Everyone else has great suggestions. There are tons of options; it depends on your budget, his taste and his body type (i.e., does he need any special sizing? I have a hard time finding jeans for my son because he is very tall but very slim, so I order his jeans from gap.com so I can get slims), and your interest in shopping online.

I have the most luck at Kohl's and JC Penney for my son.

J C Penney used to have only truly boring kids' clothes. Lately, I've noticed stylish jeans with various finishes, rock & roll tees and Vans skater shoes in the young men's department. The boy's department has pretty much the same cool clothing. Best store brands: Arizona Jeans, St. John's Bay. And Penney's has Columbia Coats for much less than full retail! I have never had much luck finding ANYTHING at Burlington Coat Factory. What you're seeking all depends on this boy's style: preppy/classic, skater/grunge or hippie/rocker. I know grunge fashion still exists because I work at a college campus. Oh the interesting and sometimes shocking styles I see. What a hoot!

I would definetely say Target and Kohls. Then Sears or Penneys for what's missing. Target has fairly decent quality for fairly decent prices/ It also has a mix of styles. Kohls is great for the same reason and always has tons of sales. Sears & Penney's can fill in what you don't find there. Good luck and its great you're helping your friend with the shopping!

I will cast my vote for Old Navy, Target, Sears and JC Penney for a boy of this age. Also, Gap and Old Navy started their Friends and Family 30% off discount yesterday, so you could probably get some good deals at those two. If you need a code to use in store, let me know; I think I can forward one to you. Or else just ask when you go to one of the stores. It's not an exclusive discount. :)

Good luck!!

Old Navy, Target and The Children's Place are the three stores I go to most for my kids' clothing.

JCPenney or Sears would probably be a good bet for children's coats. How about gear type stores like REI?

Thanks all! I'm leaving tomorrow for Portland. Shopping day is Sunday. I'll try to check in before them.
Funny thing about the kid. A few years back he said he wasn't like me. I'm a "fancy person" in referring to my style of dressing.

I don't like JCP for my son- we do better at Kohls (for Levi's) or Target. They also all love Hot Topic for edgy items. My son and his friends all mostly wear Converse or Vans, and wear hoodies as outerwear. I haven't been into a Burlington in ages, so I can't say how they are. My son is a little older, though- he's 14.

I'm not familiar with Burlington Coat. I know the boys around here are into Van's shoes, Fox Racing apparel and skater logo tees. Unless it's raining, all I ever see for outwear is a hoody. That's probably not appropriate for Portland.

I've had success at JCP for my daughters. I think unless he's at that awkward size between children's and young men, you will find what you need there.

Not a Mum but how about the Gap, Nike, ON and Adidas? My 11 year old nephew loves their stuff. He's a Londoner so he's really into wearing dark black slogan T's and Docs too.

I have to help a 11 year old boy go back to school shopping for clothes. His mother is in a nursing home recovering from major surgery.
He's going into 6th grade this fall. His mom from what I can remember (I'm closer to the father) likes to shop at JC Penney. He lives in the Portland, Oregon area.
So far I know he needs sneakers and a coat/jacket.
Does Burlington Coat factory have good coats for kids? Need stores and brands.
