Since you seem to be on the cusp of petite, maybe open up to buying regular size? Then there might be more options. Sometimes depending on your body type you could wear a regular and then just hem a bit for the right fit.

Thank you, Thistle, that's a good look and the right price. I have no idea on size. Looks like according to their size chart, I'm in between 6 and 8. Hmm.

Suz, it does not have to be v neck or surplice, but I wanted to try that look. I'm analyzing what I don't like about the dresses I've tried lately and realized that pleats and lots of gathers on the front of the dress are not working for me. If the waist doesn't sit exactly right I look pregnant. I'd like to wear the dress for lots of different occasions, so it needs to not be too dressy, i.e., probably not going to be a shiny satiny material, but cotton, spandex, polyester, chiffon, etc. all would be fine. If it helps, I'm 5'3" and about 129 lbs. It's ridiculous that some one this short is having a hard time finding long enough dresses! End rant.

Columbine, does it have to be surplice or V neck? And how dressy do you want it?

I got a Ralph Lauren sheath dress in navy. It's knit, so not very dressy, but it's comfortable and although it is not petite, it works for me at 5'4" and on the small framed side.

I got it on sale at The Bay (Canadian dept store) so it was inexpensive. I'll bet it's on sale in the US, too. http://www.ralphlauren.com/pro.....age=family

Thanks for the links and helps, ladies. I'm looking at some of those Jcrew dresses at the moment. I give up on Lands End and Macy's for the time being, I've struck out too many times. I like the Nordstrom dresses of course but they are out of my budget. I've bought two new dresses recently I decided to keep but can't wear to these two family weddings I'm going in April (one is a fit and flare Macy's dress I showed here, it's pretty but needs tailoring, the other is a beautiful red wrap dress that's too fancy looking for a beach wedding and not a color I'd pick for the day wedding either.) What I have left in the closet is too worn, too fancy, too short, or not nice enough looking. So the budget is a bit tight right now but I still have nothing to wear, lol.

If your budget can stetch a touch more, check out Nordstrom's fit and flare, they have A LOT, and many, many of them are flattering.

I bought this Lands End dress last summer and really enjoyed it. It's jersey instead of woven:

It's getting frustrating trying to find dresses lately. I got this Lands End dress to try and fill some wardrobe holes, but it's not very flattering from behind and it really poofs up in front and looks bad when sitting down because of the pleats poofing up. The bodice fits beautifully, it's just the skirt that doesn't work. I'd really like to find a navy sheath type dress, v neck or surplice front, similar to this. This one looks ok with a cropped cardi and belt, but I'm holding out for something more flattering. I think I'm done with fit and flare for awhile, just haven't been able to find the right fit. If anyone sees a navy blue sheath in petite sizing, let me know please.
