I don't have a waist or much of a bust and find sheath dresses can work well, especially if the bottom is cut full enough. Fit and flare are even easier to fit. You might try some of the Calvin Klein dresses. They are usually not very expensive, especially on sale. I'd also suggest a denim skirt for work. They are as easy as jeans. Another way to ease into dresses is to wear a short dress as a tunic over skinny jeans/denim leggings. This would be especially good with your boots. I'd suggest staying away from knits unless they are thick enough not to cling and going for woven fabrics.

modgrl, I do like the look of that snakeprint dress. I might give it a try. Too bad there are no Dillard's around here to try it in person.

Una, thank goodness that Theory dress isn't available in my size or it would've been ordered on the spot. I'm terrible at articulating what I like/want but that was perfect in every way. Except price. And I would totally convince myself it was appropriate MOTG-wear. I love me some Eileen Fisher but it's more than I'm looking to spend. That third dress looks very promising. Too bad it's not available locally or I'd go look for it tomorrow.

Thanks so much for the suggestions, everyone. Very helpful.

Okay, do you have to have waist definition? I don't have much of a waist, and I'm somewhat busty. I find a dress that is fitted on top and then falls away below my ribcage is flattering - not necessarily fit and flare, more like a fitted trapeze shape, or an a-line skirt.

For example (not that you need this price range, but they were the first I could find!):

Suz, I'm 5'4-1/2" so I make sure I check petite sizes as well. Sometimes they work better for sleeves and overall length. There's usually not as many choices available in stores but I do always look.

Wannabe, you are way too hard on yourself! I see a cute shape in those photos! And you DO have a waist. It does look as if you might be a bit shortwaisted (i.e. your waist is high up on your body) but if so, you are like countless other women.

How tall are you? If you are not tall, you might find some luck with petite styles.

I am thinking a nice A line shape would be fun and casual for you, and if you could find one with a bit of an empire waist, it might work most easily.

Good luck on your shopping adventures and hope they go well!

modgrl, I'm looking for a casual dress or two, mostly for MOTG weekend wear, though once I get comfortable enough I might brave wearing it to work as well. My workplace is casual so no concerns there. (The only reason I don't wear dresses or skirts to work is because I work with 95% men and they all act like 12 yr olds and think it's hillarious that I'm wearing a dress and I don't hear the end of it, at least the few times I have worn a dress to work in the past.) Also, I'd like to be able to wear the dress with my new boots (Veronica slouch). I don't shy away from color but I don't generally like pastels. I'd like to get at least one black/gray dress and one print. Also, since it's winter I'd prefer it at least be short sleeve. Sleeveless also tends to look funny on me but I can always throw a sweater on top. I wish I could describe my style, but I don't think I've defined it yet. Grown-up punk rocker maybe? LOL. I pretty much live in bootcut jeans and t-shirts, alternating between Blundstones and a girlier shoe, minimal accessories (wedding ring, stud earrings) and no makeup. I'm rather bored with this routine and would like to add more interesting clothing to my repertoire. Also I'm 36 and would like to start looking a bit more refined rather than dressing the same as I did as a grad student. Thanks for asking the right questions to have me work through this therapy session. :)

As for the dress you linked to, I absolutely adore animal print, but in lesser quantities. Other than that, I do like the cut of that dress. In the past Tahari was always a go-to brand, but at my current size their stuff just doesn't fit quite right.

Edited to add: I just mentally scanned my wardrobe and realized it is devoid of prints. I can think of one patterned dress, and one striped shirt. I make up for it with texture though. Ruffles, chunky knits, pleated details, pointelle, etc. Interesting. I didn't even realize this about myself.

What do you need a dress for and do you have any favorite styles/colors? How tall are you? How about something like this:

http://www.dillards.com/produc.....ion_060111

It has nice shaping at the waist, a pretty neckline, sleeves and a camouflaging print. What do you think? I hit a macy's this weekend and they seemed to have alot more available in the store than online. Good luck!!

Amy, I do like the look of that dress, even though it's a lot more dressy than what I'm looking for. The few times I've come across dresses like this in stores they've been out of my size, or they had some other fatal flaw. Unfortunately I'm not usually proactive about shopping since I work full time and have two little ones which doesn't leave much time for shopping so I tend to let it slide until I absolutely need something and then I go looking for it. This time I'm trying to add things ahead of any particular need. I've spent more time shopping in the past few months than I have in years but I haven't had good luck finding things. I'm hoping to take advantage of family this upcoming weekend to spend more time at the stores, though the prospect of dealing with holiday crowds already has me in a cold sweat, lol.

I'd be curious to see how you'd look in a dress similar to this v-neck dress with a twist. I know you're not after sequins, but I recall seeing similar jersey type dresses and I think they're both comfortable and flattering on a lot of different women.

A v-neck wrap dress might be nice too!

Edited to add: I have a similar issue with dresses not fitting over my hips and find that I can often get away with jersey which stretches and slight a-line dresses.

Sure thing. Unfortunately, this was about the most form-fitting top I could find.Sorry about the lack of photography skills. DH is the designated photographer in this house and he's not home right now so this was the best I could do with my phone.

Also, please excuse the closet purge going on in the background. I don't typically have piles of clothes lying about.

I rarely, if ever, wear dresses. I don't have any particular philosophical opposition to them, just don't have many, and the ones I do have are for fancy occasions. I'm looking to add a couple of casual dresses to my closet but I'm having a dickens of a time finding anything. The issue is I don't really have a waist. As in, there's maybe an inch of difference between my shoulders/hips and my waist. Also, I I'm carrying extra weight around the middle and I have a small bust. I find most dresses are almost always flapping about in the chest/neck area if I manage to get them over my hips.

Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas? I could also make do with some skirts instead of dresses (I don't have any of those either).
