Thanks so much, everyone! I think I'm as ready as I can be. A couple of the Goodwill shirts will fit buttoned over the sling, so we'll take one of those to the surgery. I cut an undershirt up the side and along the bottom sleeve seam. It's quite easy to get on and off one-handed, so that will at least prevent the tummy flash at the office;-).

We found a couple super lightweight ponchos at Target for sling coverage in the shower. Also got the baby wipes, safety pins and frozen peas.

He has rearranged the family room and bedroom to the point that I will surely break my neck if I have to get up in the middle of the night, but at least I won't have to be fetching things he can't reach with his left arm!

We have to be there at 6am Tuesday. Will keep you posted! Maybe I'll even get a WIW out of him while he's on the happy pills.

Anna has a great suggestion to see a specialized OT who will have great advice. Several of my children have broken their arms and I purchased a very expensive rubber sleeve, with a valve. This allowed them to bathe, shower and even swim in the pool for up to 20 minutes. I dont think that would work for hubby tho since he cannot move his arm at all.
As for the shirts, a friend of mine has surgery for frozen shoulder. She purchased shirts - cut them up the seam and attached velcro, rather than pins. She said this worked very well.

I would suggest leaving the operative arm under a loose shirt and putting the non-operative one through the sleeve per usual. This will minimise movement, follow your doctors instructions and reduce pain and the chance of tears by keeping the shoulder stable in the immediate post operative days. I know it will look odd but will suffice until his surgeon is happy for the sling to come off for the activities of daily living. At least it is summer in the USA so he won't freeze with this.
All the very best to your husband and take good care of him Carter. Even the most simple things become difficult when we have an arm out of action so he will need lots of practical help.

I had rotator cuff repair on my dominant shoulder a year and a half ago. I guess my surgeon wasn't quite as strict. I was forbidden from taking off the sling for the first 24 hours. After that, I could take the sling off to take a shower; I just had to leave my arm by my side and not move it. I also had to cover my incisions with waterproof bandages. What was forbidden was active movement of the shoulder. I also wasn't doing any passive motion exercises of the shoulder. I mostly wore t-shirts that were one to two sizes too big; I could easily put the t-shirt on my dominant arm first and then get the rest of myself into the t-shirt. For day of surgery, a truly oversized t-shirt is useful; he can just put his left arm into it and then stick it over his head with the sling under the t-shirt. The ice chiller definitely made recovery easier. I was fine sleeping on my back, but I did use a pillow on my dominant side to help keep the sling level.

As far as typing goes, I was relatively proficient one-handed typing due to a previous injury. Depending upon how much typing he needs to do, voice transcription software might be easier. He'll also have to learn to use the mouse with his non-dominant hand. The only other issue that I had after surgery was shoes. I couldn't tie them while my arm was in the sling, so I wore either slip-ons, flip flops, or velcro closure shoes. Even after I got out of the sling, it took another month or two of physical therapy before I tie my shoes without pain.

The video that annagybe linked provides good advice.

This is quite a poser, Carter. I agree with Anna that an occupational therapist would be your best bet for practical solutions. Pharmacists, also, can be very helpful, and I should think that they would be able to suggest products for keeping the sling dry during showering.
I think your idea for customising the shirts could work very well, though I suspect it may be a case of trial and error.
Good luck to your DH for the operation, and I hope you are able to find the help you need.

I've watched people use that ice pump thing at my PT office and the patients seem to find it useful. I've never done it though. Good luck to your spouse. I'm working hard to keep my shoulder issues from progressing. FWIW, when I had ankle surgery four years ago, my doc put the Fear of Jesus into me regarding "absolutely no weight on it for three weeks," fear of retears, etc. etc. I did fall twice while on the crutches, and once did have to catch myself on that leg. And when I went back to have the aircast/taping/gauze removed after 21 days, I confessed I had put weight on it once. My doc said they only super emphasize the no weight thing to keep people from doing too much at once and it's basically a scare tactic. So hopefully, this is similar and while you can work very hard to comply, tiny small transgressions won't lead to terrible consequences.

Very interesting articles, Anna! I couldn't open the first one, but the other two were very helpful. The PA said the doc has never had a re-tear, although he has fixed many re-tears. Perhaps the ultra-conservative post-operative instructions are what's keeping his record clean. Hopefully we will not be the first!

Lara, unfortunately, he was very clear about not removing the sling, even for a shower or to put on a shirt. We will take a look at the Dvorak keyboard. No idea such a thing existed!

I think the doctor will let him take the sling off to get dressed. He just wants him in the sling for the majority of the day. But since you said that any movement could be bad I would ask what should your husband wear coming home from the hospital. I wonder if the PT office could be of help. A one armhole shirt? Or could you put a slit in the side if the shirt where the arm from the elbow in the sling could poke out.

Also, since your DH has to type have him checkout the Dvorak keyboard for one hand typing. You can select right or left hand. That helped my DH out.

Sorry could not be of more help

Must be in light of new research

http://www.palmbeachpost.com/n.....surgery/nb...

I guess though it is still based on animal models.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pm.....MC3325631/

But it sounds like the surgeons are up on current research, so that's good. You want a surgeon who's experienced, but not stuck in old school thinking.

Lara, cross-posted on your second one. I was very surprised about not removing the sling as well. Absolutely not, the doc said. He will go to PT after a few weeks. They will secure his shoulder to remove the sling during PT so he can work the arm but not the shoulder. Not totally clear on the medical procedure, but apparently there's no super secure way to repair a rotator cuff tear, so once they do whatever it is they do, it takes significant time for it to hold. Any movement can cause a re-tear.

Just asked my DH and he said he did not wear his sling when he showered. And with my help he got his arm through the shirt sleeve and into the sling. ( his surgery was 10 yrs ago)

I am surprised that your DH won't be allowed to take his arm out of the sling for 6 weeks. I think after the 1st week my DH took his arm out to just do gentle arm circles, where you bend over and just let the arm hang down and make little circles. This is to prevent frozen shoulder.

You will get full discharge instructions that will detail what he can and cannot do.

Also, my DH slept in a chair for at least the 1st week since that was easier until the pain subsided.

My DH had surgery on bone spurs in both shoulders ( at different times) and has this exact same sling. No problem getting the sleeve in the sling.

Let me recommend one thing while your DH recovers. My DH bought an ice pump recommended by his orthopedist (not sure exactly what it is called. Will try to find a pic and/or link online) instead of just using a cold wrap. It is an box with a pump that you fill with ice and it connects to a wrap that circulates cold water to the area. It helped my DH stay pain free without meds and helped with recovery.

Aww, thanks Suz! It has been an interesting year as we both get our 50,000 mile overhauls. The goal is to get everything taken care of by the end of the year so we'll be all set until the next service;-)

Anna, no one has mentioned an occupational therapist. He will go to PT starting about 4 weeks in. Here's the thing though...he retires June 30, so we only have 4 weeks where he needs to be dressed for public consumption, worry about typing at work, etc. Maybe if I run down to the PT gym while he's in surgery, they will have paid more attention to their patients than the doctor's staff has?

Hmm, I see similar slings often at work.
Is he going to work with an occupational therapist? They have good real world solutions. Well at least mine was great.

Carter, I have no useful advice, but I am hoping someone will, and I want to wish you and your husband the best. You have certainly had your share of surgeries this year. And I think you are brilliant for heading to Goodwill for the short sleeved shirts -- your husband is a lucky man.
