It sounds like you are not one to lose umbrellas, but I'm also assuming you will not be in situations where your umbrella might get stolen? That would be my only hesitation in buying a spendy umbrella. Otherwise, I'm all for getting a sturdy umbrella no matter the cost.

Approprio already mentioned Knirps, that's where my mind went first. I personally only have a cheap no name umbrella right now, but there are several "Knirpse" in use in the family and they're great.

I've used Fulton umbrellas for decades and usually want to treat myself to a new brollie before my old one gives out. The Bay often has a good selection of the slimline and ultra light collapsible styles which fit easily into my smallish handbags so they are always with me. I prefer the manual ones because they are lighter. The Fulton frames are designed so they snap back into shape if the wind turns them inside out. I've never had a frame break on me. My husband often carries a tiny rectangle one in his jacket pocket.

I am a big fan of Knirps umbrellas. They are the only ones that have held up for me in the high winds we get here in Holland.

Here is a page of their folding umbrellas. I can't see the one I'm using at the moment, which is quite heavy duty, but I had a lightweight foldable one for over ten years before it finally buckled.

Need a good quality collapsible umbrella for commuting and don't have any idea where to start the search!

My full sized umbrella is 20+ years and in perfect, though faded condition. I paid around $35.00, which was a lot at the time. It is a Black Watch plaid and there are lots of wooden components and a leather wrapped handle. Unfortunately at full sized, this umbrella is too unweildy for my train commute. (I am already shlepping a gym bag and purse.)

Recomendations, please. Spendy is ok. What has worked for you?
