You want to create a waist. I am still learning, but our measurements are not too far off (I'm 5' 10", 36/32/39) and I find that those styles tend to work well. A good fitting boot cut jean (not a big flare at the bottom) will take you far. Make sure they are long enough to wear with a heel to slenderize the leg. Play up your arms and your upper body with open necks and vibrant colors. Keep things simpler and darker on the bottom half.
