So I try to think which type is more available in the best interpretation of its type ( long gowns are hard for me to find). Meaning, an excellent luxurious skirt or perfectly fitting cocktail dress in good fabrics trump a low- quality long gown, to me. But if I came across an amazing find as Janet recently did, I’d jump!</p> <p>What is your shoe situation? If your feet aren’t fussy then you have options to dress up more simple attire with great shoes. I am a shoe disaster now for dressy wear, but could manage a simple black ankle strap flat, so for that I’d need dressy wide trousers or tuxedo pant/ suit or long skirt &amp; a top or top/ jacket. </p> <p>Nordstrom or other big department stores-I think have the best selection ( using their online stock also. To me WHBM has fewer things I’d pick for a gala— but it’s worth a look. Fit is really important to the look, looking like you own the style and it’s not wearing you. It always takes me a long time to put separates together and for something dressy I am out of my league. If it had worked for this old body of mine it's definitely what i would be wearing. I can wear with a whole variety of tops and toppers. They are navy background with black velvet flocking and on 5'4" me they are full length (or a little beyong that) with 2 inch heels. </p> <p>Among the tops in my closet that I plan to wear with them....different levels of dressiness...the Rails top is sparkly silver. Other planned accessories/ footwear options in Finds as well. Just to give an idea. Various toppers possible as well.&nbsp;</p> <p>I also have a fab dressy skirt from Zara that I will wear in various ways. I had a similar pair in black that I wore with trousers that I ran into the ground. Those are really tempting - though I’ve been trying to cut back shoe purchases (I’m running out of room!). I am curious though about boots like these and dresses - can I wear this height boot shaft with a dress below the knee? To add glam to the everyday, I might wear an everyday item with a luxe detail, but to go all out, I will often look at a style of clothing that works and have a casual or dressy version in my wardrobe. These are 3 dresses in my wardrobe that are similar in style but differ in the level of formality. I like EFisher silk sleeveless or grown on sleeves dresses as a basic. I find them at the web site. Black gets a workout for black overpinnings are easy to find as are black shoes and boots. We have had a bunch of recent snow so I am wearing tall black boots over tights or long wooly socks. I have an old quilted black jacket that goes well now that it is altered to be smaller. Aback seam in the original jacket makes this easy to do. This was a hint by the alterations guy at Nordstroms,. Be sure to ask the SA’s who does the best alterations. They know. I have something in my closet that could work but would love to be able to add to my fun-dressy capsule. What sites/stores would you look at? Are there designers that seem to always have something you like? </p> <p>Have you all seen or bought something recently - particularly a dress - that was a bit glam or dressy?</p> <p>My parameters are pretty specific. I’m on the short side of regular sizing, short waisted and curvy. I tend toward lower necklines to lengthen my neck/upper torso. Sleeves of some length are a priority. I tend to lengths past the knee. </p> <p>Anyway - if you have any thoughts at all I’m all ears. Apologies for being vague </p>
