You might try one of those 3in1 deals, with a shell and insulated layer that can be worn together or separately. Columbia has some things that are pretty reasonably priced. I wish that they fit me better. I got a 3in1 from Marmot. It’s not quite true New England weight even with both layers together, but I was looking for spring fall options. I’d caution against only a down puffer unless it’s waterproof down. Having a thick outer waterproof shell is really important for windchill and precipitation in Chicago.

On really cold days I find a Uniqlo type puffer jacket with hood layers nicely under a longer coat and gives extra warmth. For cold windy Chicago you need a longer-than-jacket-length coat, gloves cap and warm scarf. Tall boots help too.

Take a look at Eddie Bauer too. Lots of great colors. I bought this one in Feb and love it. I found it true to size in aSmall Petite.

The Sosken looks really nice- on its own might not be warm enough for chicago winters, but would work with layers
Have you looked at Bernardo? they have decent quality, I think, and would pack down really nicely for the plane.
These north face coats look nice too, the first looks like more of a raincoat than a winter coat, but maybe that would be more versatile for you - you could layer thin, warm layers underneath when in chicago.

I think you need a serious puffer - like a Canadian puffer. I have a few of those. Soia & Kyo and Mackage. Lands End and the North Face are good too.

May I lands end? Since you’re need a really warm but infrequently used coat, lands end down coats are a great value and come in colors.

Yes, it has to be WARM for Chicago! I want to find a second coat for my outside exercise walks this winter (in Michigan). My main coat is black, and I’m so ready for color. The Sosken coat caught my eye, but when I saw it doesn’t have a hood, I crossed it off my list. I hope you keep us posted about what you end up getting for a warm coat.

eta: my mistake -- I own a similar Uniqlo coat that has stretch -- not the exact one that was linked. The linked coat looks warmer than mine.

.... it is super comfortable as it has stretch built in so I love it for that reason alone. That said, it's just not that warm. I am happy to wear it on warmer winter days, but am in the market for a real, true winter coat to wear on the colder days....

Thanks! Thistle: I hadn't even thought of Lands End, although I did look at the catalogue last and noted that they had some nice looking down jackets.

CocoLion and Kate: I hadn't thought of Uniqlo either. The stores here seem to carry mainly the short jacket version, which are popular here. I'll look online.

Colette: I do have a big cashmere scarf from NAS years ago, but lately my cats have taken ownership of it for naps, and I looked for a new one on NAS. Didn't see the one, but when I get to the store I'll look more.

Kiex: Good advice. Right that I only need to be able to squish it down.

In the last 3-4 years I've bought quilted short jackets on NAS and they work great here, but are not nearly warm enough for real winter.

+1 to a puffer coat, but I don't think it absolutely has to be "packable." Down coats tend to squish down fairly well in my carry-on suitcase. Source: I've spent several New Years recently in western Montana, sometimes with an East Coast stopover but other times to/from various parts of California.

I second CocoLion's suggestion. I have one of Uniqlo's packable down coats and love it. Bought it on a whim last season, and it turned out to be a workhorse.

What Thistle said. Also Uniqlo is great for well-made packable down. The heavier option looks better for your needs.

I would look for a packable down jacket.

I didn't see any at NAS, but places like Lands End and LL Bean carry good quality ones.

We usually spend the Christmas holidays with family in a Chicago suburb. They laugh at me because of all my layers, but I tell them my blood is thin from living in California.

I'd like a new winter coat--warm enough for real winter, but also suitable for occasional chilly nights here.

Any suggestions? My first order became unavailable and was cancelled. I have an 8-yr-old Tahari puffer bought at NAS, but it doesn't fit so well and my body has changed. I feel like the Michelin man in the Tahari, and it's a pain to zip up.

I'd like a lightweight coat that can be stuffed into my carryon bag, that is also reasonably stylish.

I think I'll try the red Sosken, but would like any other suggestions. Thanks
