Joy, Inge, I think our friends being told to evacuate made me feel panicked. That and the lack of information, not knowing what’s going on.

So true. I am thinking of making a list of items To grab,I don’t have to think too much. I would probably forget cash, my passport and social security card as they are not usually with me.

Inge, Joy, yes I think it’s completely out. Years ago, before we lived here, we watched a fire burn down a hill and come toward us. We packed clean clothes and precious things - photos, handmade items, etc. This time, we packed clothes and laptops. I don’t know why we didn’t pack any precious things. I think it shows that when we’re rattled, it’s hard to think straight.

Glad to here things have calmed down. The big topic of conversation here is “what would you grab if you had to evacuate without much warning?” Keep the car filled with gas. The safety goggles are a good idea.

I am so so sorry to hear of this and what a relief it must be that it rained. I am glad the dogs were safe. Our homes are so so important.

The information vacuum must have been really concerning. I am wondering if there is anything that can be done within your community to assist should this arise again.

(Back in the days when a nuclear war was a threat, my father received instructions from the government about how to relay the news of an impending attack. It seems crazy looking back at it - it basically involved him cycling around a reasonably sizeable widely dispersed village blowing a whistle. Maybe there are far better methods that others are used now - like tsunami warnings in south easy Asia.)

Thinking of you and hoping that the threat of the fire has passed.

Oh Janet, I just saw this. I hope it is still raining there. It's been heavy wet snow/snain/rain for us, but intermittent. Wind has been howling with trees bending everywhere. I reminded my quaranteam to keep their devices charged up yesterday because I though we might lose power. It happened late last night, but was back on by the time we got up.

Do you use Nixle? https://www.nixle.com/ To sign up you text your zip to them and you get emergency alerts. I've been using it in our area for a few years and it is generally more helpful than annoying.

We have our wifi router plugged in to a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Source). We have weak cell signal at home, and when everyone is on it during a power outage it is can be non-existent. Of course if cable is down too it doesn't help. I second Twitter feeds for local emergency services - it was an important source for info during the last round of fires and smoke.

I understand your frustration -- it can be really hard to find timely local information.

I tend to look for a local AM news radio station. A couple in my area have partnerships with local TV stations and do wall-to-wall coverage of big local events--usually severe weather.

also, ahead of time, locate the Facebook and YouTube feeds for your local radio or TV stations . . . whichever ones are most likely to have local reporting. You can also download their apps, but I've usually been frustrated by the apps, rather than helped.

During recent severe weather, I was watching the Twitter feeds of local emergency services -- can also google for and then bookmark the Twitter feeds for your local police department, fire department, and city government. You can monitor these feeds through your web browser without having to sign up for Twitter.

Kelly, we’ve had fires in the area, but none seemed this close. A few years ago a friend was evacuated and she had no idea what was happening. We watched the tv coverage at our house, and then we tried to drive over to see if her house was okay, but the cops stopped us. On our way we drove past a couple houses that were on fire! This time, we had power, but no cable or internet. Funny how reliant we are on it for info. I think the cellular was so slow because everyone was trying to find out what was going on.

Angie, yes, 2020 is the WORST! I definitely wouldn’t recommend it.

We’re looking into a police scanners, and maybe we should sign up for twitter. I think there may have been notifications there.

That’s frightening! It makes me think of the people that live in the Santa Cruz mountains—where they’re more susceptible to outages. We have one of those transistor radios for emergencies. Perhaps that is an option for you?

Rachy, my neighbor got in her car to look, and then had a hard time getting back home due to so many closed roads. A five minute trip took over an hour! I thought she was a little irresponsible, but maybe not. That was the only way we knew the fire had jumped a major road was by what she saw.

Cardiff girl, we’re wet this morning - yay!!! I grew up by SF Bay and a storm with all of this tremendous wind would be accompanied by rain. But we get very little precipitation here.

I got a call from our veterinarian this morning. I took our dogs in a couple days ago. She apologized for not getting back to us earlier - she was evacuated from her own home!

Gosh this is really scary.lm afraid that I have no wisdom to impart as this is not an issue here in wet Wales but I can only imagine how nerve wracking this all is .As if this year hasn’t been stressful enough.l hope everything works out ok.

Fire moves so rapidly and the chances it can take your Internet long beforehand are quite good. They tell you here not to wait for an evacuation call or depend on having information and to keep an eye on your immediate situation. As in go outside and look. And in fact, my town pre-evacuated the high hill areas for a pending windstorm one weekend this year... about a month ago. Also, they tell you to have safety goggles...!
