I am definitely retuning the boots tomorrow. I'm going to use the credit for this EF silk tank that I can wear year-round, and would work with my grey/black/white dress code for work. I'm glad I posted, as now I know what to look for, and I can afford to be patient. I have heard of Duo boots before, I will certainly check them out. Modgirl - not a bad alternative!

abc - this is indeed an unusually wet and humid week for Austin. I hope you are able to enjoy some of the food scene here, it's one of my favorite things about Austin!

First of all, I love your hair and style.

If you strike out everywhere you can try Duo Boots, where you can order for calf circumference AND height. It's a UK company so there may be duties (not sure) but if you are like me and NO retail boot fits, it could be a solution. And hello from ATX, I'm here on business this week. Today is about 1000% humidity...!

I have the same issues in fit, Brenn. With a calf that's just a little wide, I often find wide widths too big and regulars too small. I'm the Goldilocks of boot-wearers. Fortunately, height is usually not a problem.

You're starting early, so you should have time to find something that works. Good luck!

It's a bit hard to tell but I think they actually look a bit too tall AND too wide. I wonder if you actually need wide calf boots at all. I have 15" circumference calves and just look for regular width shafts that are more generous (wide calf is usually too wide and more importantly huge in the ankle). Last year I had good luck with Blondo boots, and I know Sveta has some blondos too.

Yeah...sigh. 16" is pretty common -- and way too tall for the likes of little me.

Well, good luck in your search, and take your time. In Austin, summer linens might be a little more critical!

Thank you for the feedback, ladies. I see how the issue is they are too tall, not necessarily too wide. Per Nordstrom, they have a 16" tall shaft, so I now know that I need to be looking for something shorter. It's just frustrating that wide calf boots are harder to find in-store, making it time-consuming and pricey to do it all online, but that may be the answer.

Suz, I live in Austin, so boots are far from a winter necessity :). I suppose the upside is that once I find the perfect pair, they won't get worn to death, so they will last many seasons if I find something classic. Thanks again!

Okay. What that means is that the shaft of the boot is too tall for you. So the boot's widest part does not fit in your widest part. If you know what I am saying. ;)

The whole boot fit question is fraught for those of us who live in a cold climate. I really NEED to wear boots. I got lucky one year -- our weather was such that I could get away with short boots for almost the entire winter. But typically, I need tall boots for warmth and practicality. So not being able to find any that fit was upsetting. I compromised (before YLF) with a pair that were "almost" right. It was the best I could do. And I am not sorry, in one way. As I said...I pretty much need to have boots! :) But they are expensive, and if not perfect can make you feel resentful, so if you can manage to wait, it is a good idea to be patient and picky. And try a LOT on.

You can measure the height and width of your calf. Then look at the boot's measurements. (Zappos and Nordstrom's usually give these measurements.) That will help you narrow out those that just are not contenders, and help you pick brands that might work.

Ah, tall boot sufferings! They are a beast to fit for the most of us!
I think they are too wide or too tall or both. If they fit well in the calf and gap on top they definitely too tall - look for shorter calf length.
Good luck!

Thank you for the link - very helpful! I should've known to search for previous posts. The boots are actually snug against my leg at the widest part of my calf, but they stand away from my leg a bit at the top because my leg is narrowing again at that point. Where I sometimes struggle is, when I try something that I haven't had much experience with, I am unsure what is good enough, or if I really could find something that would be just that much better.

Hi, Brenn!

Tall boots are a devil to fit. You are not alone!

It is tough for me to see very well on my monitor, but I suspect these are a bit tall and wide for you all over.

Angie has some posts about boot fit. Here is one.

That can give you a bit of a start.

I am not tall (5'4") and I have proportionately short calves. It has been difficult to find tall boots that work for me, but eventually I managed to do it. The brand that worked for me is La Canadienne. Pricey, but can be had on 6 pm at lower rates if a person gets lucky.

Hi ladies,

I decided to look into some tall boots for the first time in...ever. I needed them to be black, fit a wide calf, come in size 11, and preferably have silver hardware. I purchased these today and think they work, but I'm not sure.

Before I lost a considerable amount of weight, tall boots wouldn't fit me at all, so I'm not really sure what a proper fit looks like. They look a bit loose around the ankle in the last pic, but I was bending at the knee a bit. I realized when I got home that these aren't the greatest pics. I'm 5'6", but have short legs - these hit me right at the base of the knee. Is that ok? If you have short legs, are tall boots something that should just be avoided? I feel fairly fashion-savvy, but am more clueless about boots than I thought.

I would wear them with skinny jeans/pants and longer top. I was wearing boyfriend jeans today, so grabbed narrower ones from the sales floor, which weren't so great. Any advice appreciated!

On the plus side, I did place an order for the rest of the NAS items I've been looking at in plus-sizes. Can't wait for the UPS man!
