I don't think I could get away with wearing the skirt with a tucked shirt (since it does look high-waisted), but I think you could get away with wearing a banded top or something similar, untucked. Is there any way for you to try it? I never tuck but I still wear lots of high waisted skirts. This Polyvore image by Imogen gives a great visual that I have found to be very accurate.
