Great coat, I vote keep. The buttons are enough edge to my eye.

Ah Ok. I would just say try it with your max number of layers, before committing, but perhaps you did that already. Fab coat!

Thanks, all! I also spied a teal Cole Haan coat online (not in store) in NAS, so I'm ordering that too before I commit to this. I like it a lot, but I'm not sure it's The One. Black is of course very versatile, but the teal appeals to me a lot.

I do still love my old burgundy coat, but I have a feeling it's going to start showing its wear and tear this winter, and it's my one reliable longer coat (all my others are short, like the JCrew tipped pea coat) . I think I've had the burgundy one for at least 5-6 years, and I plan to keep it (it's classic and I love the color), but when I see a beloved item like that start to show a little wear, I think it's good to have a new favorite come in to play.

Zap, yes, this would be a winter coat for me and would accommodate layers underneath.

Question, is this coat for layering?

Thanks for the feedback! Encouraging so far. Claire, good point about the longevity of a coat.

LOL @ Anna! Yes, I know. It's pathetic. But if I start with the tripod and the D800 and choosing the lens, etc., it becomes a Project. Which reminds me, I really need to get a new "professional" portrait of myself for work (my old one is five years old), and I hate taking self portraits so much. I should just hire someone.

I like it, Janet!
The shape of it emphasizes your hourglass figure so nicely- I think it's a great cut.
A good, basic black coat is always nice to have, and this one isn't too basic with the cutaway hem and nice shape.

I ordered the same coat, but, sadly, I'm realizing in seeing it one you that it's not likely to work for me since it's too fitted in the waist for my straight/apple body. Boohoo! But I'll live vicariously through you.

I like it a lot Janet! Maybe the fact that it's not terribly edgy would be a good thing, since a coat has more longevity than a blouse or sweater. I like the back pleat. It's like a little peplum-bustle thing going on. Looks like a good fit too. I love the open neckline; it's super flattering and is a great place for a scarf, like you said.

It's tough to get good pictures in here at night, but I gave it a shot.

This is an 8 and it may look a little roomy. I could wear a 6, but this will allow for cold weather layering. It has a nice flattering cut, and I like the length. I like that it is fitted without needing a belt. (My old favorite burgundy winter coat is belted.) The pleated back does make it flare out a bit (you can see it in the side view) but I don't have much of a booty so this doesn't bother me. It also doesn't bother me that it does not button all the way up to the neck -- I rarely ever close a coat up that way, and I like scarves with my winter coats anyway (especially since this is black and I can use scarves to soften the effect close to my face). It feels warm enough to me for our winters, which don't tend to be terribly harsh.

I think the bunching in the shoulder in the pic of the side view is a result of the way I'm standing and holding my phone. I couldn't get a good shot of the back, although you can see I tried.

What do you think? I *think* this is a good fit for my style, but it's not terribly edgy. I didn't really see any other wool winter coats at NAS that floated my boat...except for one that is not as versatile, that also wasn't on sale. That one came home with me too, but I'll post pics in a separate thread.

ETA: I just realized I took and posted all these pictures with the top button unbuttoned. It looks better when I actually do it up right, duh.
