Manidipa: that's a good tip on Continental brands being longer than Anglophone brands. I'll have to check it out! The wide belt is another good tip, too.

Rute: thanks! Adjusting the size worked wonders. It's interesting, in some brands I need petite jackets (for the body sizing), but here I had to move to straight sizing.

Jjsloane: Thanks for the advice. This isn't the top I would wear with the suit in real life, it was just the loungewear t-shirt I was wearing at home. I'd wear some sort of nice woven or knit blouse or shell underneath.

Great fit on the suit. For everyday work I either wear untucked with or without a sweater or vest over. Untucked knits work fine and even a semituck (but belt is required for this IMO) For an interview I'd tuck so have an option that works. I second the wide belt and maybe a scarf or necklace to break up the expanse? Or get a silky shell with a lower neckline? Or keep the top low contrast.

Well, one solution is knit blouses left untucked. I don't think they are entirely inappropriate for interviews any more for women.

I don't know how tall you are but I find the Italian and French brands often have more length than UK or US brands. Even places like Zara and Benetton. In fact I can never leave a Benetton shirt untucked, they are that long on me (under 5 ft). And they do have tux shirts these days.

As for proportions, a wider belt might help or simply buttoning your blazer at waist level to announce your waist, so to speak?

I've added a headless picture (that was the best picture) of the suit above. Ignore the t-shirt I'm wearing it with

unfrumped: I never liked the look of the high-waisted pants women wore in the 80s and 90s, but now I understand their utility, especially in a (slightly) more formal era. Are the pleated plants that you're trying out now more the slouchy type of trouser?

Gaylene: that's a good tip about the longer shirts sold at BR. Though my issue isn't just that the shirts come untucked, but that it also makes my torso look disproportionately long. I'm sure for the long torsoed this effect is even more pronounced with low-rise pants!

Lisa: did you buy any work wear? I was tempted by the Sam Edelman Military Jacket that you bought and returned; I was sorry to hear that it was so itchy.

Sounds like great basics for workwear. I also tried to keep a look out for business clothes at NAS this year.

Good to know that others have this issue because it drives long-torsoed me nuts. Dress shirts barely have enough fabric to tuck under the waistband of those low-waisted pants and, the first time I move my arm, I'm half-tucked but not in a good way!

BR used to make some dress shirts with VERY long tails that worked well, but they aren't easy to find these days. My solution is similar to unfrumped: lightweight knit sweaters and banded bottoms on wovens. I'm on the look out for more banded tops this fall because I love wearing them a la Angie with a belt and that faux tuck that she likes. Works like a dream.

Sounds like good workwear basics! The Taylor pants did not work for me--fit was off somehow. Glad you came out better.

Don't get me started on tucking into low -waisted pants! It may be why I had to pry my old high-waisted pants out of my own hands (before death, naturally) several years after most people abandoned them.
And why I don't wear more button-downs; it's a combination of how they llok have gone to a lot of tops I can wear out including knits, and wovens with bottoms that don't look so shirt-tail. And I'm trying a modern version of pleated pants that sit higher on the waist to get back the option of tucking certain blouses which still work for me but not with low-rise.

ETA: picture below!

Since I have a ton of clothing already, I didn't buy much at NAS, despite a few tempting items. However, since I'm planning on applying for jobs soon, I decided to buy some work wear.

I bought the Cole Haan Air Monica in black: http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/co.....ersonalize

These are very pretty, but straightforward looking wedges, at least in the black. The left foot fit perfectly, but the right foot pinched a tiny bit. I decided to keep them since they'll probably stretch, and I wore them to a cocktail reception recently with no problems.

I also bought the Halogen suit that Angie posted about in her reviews. Since I already have a pencil skirt suit, I decided to go with dress pants+blazer this time. So I bought the Taylor etched plaid pants: http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/co.....ersonalize in a 4P.

These fit *perfectly* out of the box on pearish me. No gaping at the waist, plenty of ease through the thigh, and the length was just right with the Cole Haan wedges. I highly recommend these pants for women with a small waist-hip ratio, they worked very well on me.

The blazer (http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/ha.....personaliz) was a bit more problematic. I originally bought the 2P, but it was slightly too big in the shoulders and bust, and much too short in the sleeves, and I felt that even the body was short to be worn with pants. Perhaps I'm not so petite up top, especially my gorilla arms. I ordered size 0 over the phone and recently got that. It fits much better and is the right length on me, so I'm satisfied with the suit as a whole now.

One thing that i don't quite understand with pantsuits though, is the tucking.
Two things:
A) women's shirts tend not to be that long, so it is harder to tuck them properly into pants, which sit lower on the hips than do pencil skirts.
B) even when I successfully tuck, it looks a bit odd since the tuck point is lower than my natural waist by a fair bit.

I almost never tuck with pants, though it makes sense to do so with the slouchy high-waisted sort. But these lower-waisted dress pants are a bit problematic. I usually leave my shirt untucked when I wear dress pants but I realize that's the less formal thing to do. Solutions for A or B?

Thanks for reading!
