Angie, you're like a gentle style therapist. . . . Okay, probably time to let the red coat go. Waaaah! I have been mulling whether I could take it all apart and remake it substantially. NOT the kind of sewing project that makes my heart sing. (So that would be a No.) Surely someone else might be happy to have the coat when I donate it.
Not sure I'm ready for team umbrella-fuss, though.

Peri, thanks for your thoughts! I am really torn about the lack of hood. If one of the navy coats had one, it would be the hands-down winner. I'm thinking about getting the plain navy one and keeping the green coat, because the green one has a hood. And I have really loved that green color. I've had it for several years now, though.

Suz, both you and Peri have little use for trenches, though for opposite climate reasons (cold versus hot).

I know, Sharan -- isn't it weird? Climate affects our needs SO incredibly. I love the look of a trench -- both in theory, and on my own self -- and love the way they wear. But. There is, on average, only about a 12 week window during any year when a trench is useful. I do wear my short Theory one quite often, I admit -- but most often when I go on trips to temperate climes. For instance, I wore it almost daily on our trip to Israel this spring. But back home, I'd still have been wearing a puffer in March, or at best, one of my wool coats....

In my climate, trench weather goes from late September to early November (and only layered, then, for most of that time) -- and then again from mid-April (if lucky) to mid-May.

In summer it is way too hot; in winter, not enough warmth.

My favorites are 1-3, 12, and 19-21. I also like 7-9, almost as much as 19-21...they seem about equal.

And by all means, replace the green one...directly to me! I have always loved it on you!

I don't have much need for a trench either. If it is raining in the summer it is too hot for a coat. If it is cooler and raining, just my normal coat and an umbrella. I have a black trench but haven't worn it in a long time. I think if it had a hood it would be a lot more useful because sometimes umbrellas are a pain. So I would definitely think a hood would be a strong preference for you.

Thanks, Angie. It's a tough call for me, too, on the blue coats. And you put your finger on my concern about the red one. I think the fit is too big all over, especially across the back and shoulders. That was the look, at the time. Oversized has come back, but in a different way. I feel this one just looks like an old coat.

More fun options.

I LOVE the ink London Fog trench on you, Sharan - but I do like a bit of shine. The muted version is just as killer though, and it makes you happier so by all means go that route.

The red coat has potential but I want to size you down. And as you suggested - alter the length.

Suz, what a thought! Not enough need for a trench coat. I was even a little surprised by the suggestions that I might try another style, since I have a couple of trenches already. They are seriously all-weather coats here in Seattle. I reach for them all year round, except for summer. And even in summer they can be needed at times.

Maybe I'll try altering the red coat!

Kiwigal, thanks! You are right that a knee-length or shorter will be my go-to for everyday. But I've been wanting a long coat for some of the longer layers I've been wearing. And sometimes my black one feels too--I don't know, formal or somber, maybe.

And P.S. I am super jealous of your need for trenches. I would love to justify that LF navy one for myself -- but I fear it would not get worn enough. I have a perfectly good black one that I almost never put on because we rarely have trench weather.

I think the red one is a gorgeous colour for you and very dramatic. Why not try the alterations? What's to hurt, right? It may end up being your perfect long coat. Definitely worth a try. I like that it is different from the others.

I like the red one, it is a terrific colour!! I think it is worth a couple of minor alterations.

I guess it depends how much call you have for a long coat....I could see you in a dramatic long coat, looking very elegant, but I imagine on a daily basis knee length is more versatile.

Thanks to everyone for weighing in with such thoughtful responses. It's so interesting that you all like the navy coat the best. I will admit it's my favorite, too. It would probably be a replacement for the green coat, though, or it would simply be a duplication of that length. (Almost, anyway; my green coat isn't quite as long.) The one drawback for me is that it doesn't have a hood, and I find myself using hoods a lot.

On the long coats, there is some difference of opinion here, and my own thoughts are that I prefer the single-breasted look as well as the color of the single-breasted one. The vintage khaki seems slightly yellow for me IRL, but it's not bad. It's just not a dynamite color for me. On the other hand, the single-breasted style, with the inner zip part and the strings hanging off the hood, is a little more sporty looking to me. I like the elegance of the double-breasted one.

I was despairing that maybe I just don't wear long coats that well, because I so prefer the knee-length. But several of you have given me hope that I can pull it off with the right style.

kiwigal, Sterling, and Suz, I think I'm going to have to keep looking for a long coat, and I like your suggestions of a different style.

Joy, of course your comments are helpful! They support the conclusion I haven't yet found my long coat.

Staysfit, sounds like the single-breasted long one is an "almost" for me, too. I'm encouraged that you were drawn to it as well.

Jackie, great thought process--I like your logic.

kellygirl, thanks--I appreciate your comments on my existing ones. The black one is quite old, but I started wearing it a bit more again last year.

Angie, I did bring home the one you showed. I loved it on me in the store. Then I ordered this second one to compare, and I liked it better, so I didn't show the NAS one here. I can photograph it later so others can see it, though. I liked the slightly longer length and the fabric of the second one; it's more subdued for sure, and that's probably part of the draw for me. It also has a quilted removable lining with the cutest Burberry-esque plaid binding.

My fav is the navy, but it seems you already have that length. To be honest, in saw the first and thought, yes that's the one. Then I saw the second and thought yes, that's just as good. Then I saw the navy and went wow. But if I had to choose for long I think I'd choose the first. You are so good at choosing the colours that work for you.

Eta - I'd choose 1 bc you already have a knee length jacket, and 2 is light coloured like your other short trench. 1 is long plus a different colour.

I love the idea of a longer coat like this. It looks so elegant. I see you in old black and white movies talking about war criminals.

Anyway, I love number 1 for the length and the single breasted-ness of it. I once read that double breasted coats were harder to wear because you almost always had to have them buttoned up. Lots of times I prefer to run off the house with the coat open. I do prefer the lighter color of numbers 4-6 for the reason Joy mentioned.

I agree 100% with Kiwigal. The navy is great and looks wonderful. The single breasted trench seems better than the double breasted, but I wonder if a completely different style might be the ticket, since you have a lot of trench coats already and since it would be primarily for slightly more dressy occasions.

I love the navy knee length trench, it looks wonderful.

I am not sure on the other two; I prefer the first one as I agree with Kelly that maybe the double breasted one is a little on the fussy side. But I wonder if I would look for a completely different style given that you have two trench styles already and may add a third. Maybe a cocoon style coat or wrap coat with no buttons.

I like your existing long black coat very much....

I am stuck with coats, so hard for me to get them right for some reason!

I love the simplicity of the long single breasted coat and the black short coat. im not sure why I don't like the double breasted coat as much--could be the belt and many buttons look too fussy to my eye. I'm not sure. Still love your other coats. They are all fab!

Just flicking through the photos, my favorite of the whole lot is the navy trench. The length looks just right. If you need a longer trench to keep you dry, I am leaning towards the vintage Khaki in 4-6 mostly because it is lighter in color and therefore the more different from your long black trench. If the first one came in a lighter color, I'd probably prefer that. The single breasted looks more streamlined. That's probably not much help.

I have had two coats in mind for a while--a navy trench and a long coat that would work over dresses and cardis that reach a couple of inches below my knees. I ordered and brought home a few to try. I haven't thought of them as one coat but as two possibilities. The long coat fills more of a wardrobe hole. My only long coat currently is a black one.

Pictured here are two long-coat candidates, and one navy trench candidate. (I'm wearing my two new booties, one on each foot, fyi.)

1-3: long single-breasted trench in dark truffle
4-6: long dougle-breasted trench in vintage khaki
7-9: knee-length double-breasted trench in navy

For reference, I'm adding pictures of my current trench coats--a short
one in taupe (photo 10) and a just-above-knee-length one in green (photo
11)--plus my long black coat (photo 12).

What do you think of the new possibilities? All thoughts welcome.

ETA:

After your suggestions of another style of long coat, I thought I would try one I have in my closet. I haven't worn it for several years, but I haven't been able to part with it, because I liked it so much when it was in style. It's dark red (the color is one thing I have always loved about it) with a removable hood and lining. I'm showing it both without belt (the way I always wore it, around 10 years ago) (pics 13-15) and with belt (16-18). Is it worth rehabilitating? I would take about 3" off the hem, and I might be able to take in the sleeves in the upper arm. More than that, I'm not willing to do.

Also adding photos of me in the NAS navy trench (pics 19-21).

Thanks for looking and for any feedback you'd like to share!
