Thanks for the inspiration, Chris! Yes, this idea has been around for, ahem, a while! But I had totally forgotten about it. I have oodles of tees that I don't want to part with for sentimental reasons, but which I don't wear.

Yes to all the comments on remixing the volunteer shirts. At minimum knotting at the waist so all that fabric has a place to be!

DD and friends get free t-shirts for each home football game, and have a t-shirt surgery station as part of their tailgates. Love to see the individuality come through!

Wow this is turning into a great discussion of how to modify t-shirts this way

Roberta I'd love to have a serger but I can't really justify it. I've done a regular zigzag stitch around the edges of that one tshirt i modified but it sounds like even that might not be needed.

Janet hope you find that photo, I think we'd all love to see it!

Joy and bj111, great examples.

All the time. I hate ribbing at the neck of many tees and chop it off to a more flattering scoop or bateau. So easy.

Now I want to see Janet’s rock and roll mods.

Ha, I did this one year with a summer reading club T-shirt when I owned a serger. I serged off the neckline and the sleeves so it looked more open and light weight. It was the envy of everyone in the library. I always find men's tshirts too close at the neck.

I used to get Curves tees at that gym and hate tees in general. I cut off the band at the neck and also cut off the sleeves so it would be cooler to wear on a hot, humid day. It made more of a tank top and the whole shirt loosens up when the bands are cut. I have never had one fray despite many washes in the machine.

Oh most definitely! I chopped up an old radio station tee because it was big and black and hot and we were wearing them did an outdoor summer concert. I’ve cut up many men’s tees to suit me better since then.

You should see what one of my safari compatriots did with our tees! She was a creative force. I’ll have to see if I can find a photo.

YES Molly Mac.

I was about to post similarly, that there was a reason for the 80s modding and it is still necessary at times today, just as you say. I had the same deal with a volunteer event this spring, though the vast majority of the volunteers and clientele of the events are women. Oh well!

The modding here does have a fun retro vibe though. There were a few cool things about the 80s among the not-so-cool. Shh, don't tell Angie I said that. ;)

LOL. I am famous among my friends for "flash dancing" generic tshirts that must be worn at certain events (volunteering, school athletic event, etc...). Every woman knows that Unisex really just means a men's cut and so I pull out my scissors to make a V neck from a crew, cut off the bottom so it doesn't hit my knees, and slash the giant sleeves to get a better fit.

I went to Nordstrom yesterday to return some NAS items, and then went into the cosmetic department to try some new eyeshadow. The SA who was helping me was wearing this way cool “refashioned” T-shirt. I thought she did it herself and asked if I could take a photo so I could think about trying the same details on a T-shirt of my own. Cut the collar, cut and tie sleeves, knot the hem. After I walked away I noticed that several other SAs we wearing the same style, so I guess my SA was not quite as original as I had thought :-). It was a great example of what can be done with a T-shirt!

Have any of you done something like this? I cut off the collar band on a t once but the neckline ended up so big that it fell off my shoulders.
