I like picking things up in stores because packages always get stolen from my steps (8 out of 10 times probably) so I have to use a delivery service that charges $4 per box. I hadn't realized Nordstrom would do that, but it seems like a really great option. It benefits them because things are returned to stock faster if you just return them immediately.

Yes, they've gotten much better about this as the use of 'buy online, pick up in store' has become more common. I think even last year you had to get someone from a department to go get your items from some storage area; this year every store I've visited has everything already packaged up and labeled at the service counter (and there *is* a service counter, for the branches that didn't have one before).

It does make trying on on the spot less convenient, but I'll trade that for the awesome quick in and out when I don't have the time to browse or wait in line.

Interesting thread. I never would have thought about doing this. In store
I was surprised to see the bags hanging in a very organized manner waiting to be picked up. And no wait for customer service when I was there.

This is exactly what I did. I ordered online on Friday and picked up in store on Saturday. This process kept me relatively focused on what I needed vs impulse purchases (except for the shoe tent!) plus package theft is very common in my area. I tried on my items in a dressing room and kept about half.

Sveta and I did this three years ago. We ordered a ton, and I mean a TON of stuff (multiple boots, sweaters, shoes, dresses in multiple sizes, check out the pics to see what I mean). We had it delivered to the Michigan store closest to where Sveta lives. I visited Sveta for an overnight. We drove across the border together, had a massive try-on session, and promptly returned what we did not want. They couldn't have been nicer about it, actually.

They did tell us that in future we could simply have stuff set aside for us (rather than purchasing and returning) but we felt we wouldn't completely trust that for sizes on the extreme range. Since Sveta takes a large and rare shoe/ boot size that sells out in an instant, and I am in the smaller range of clothing sizes (which also sell out in a blink) we felt if there was anything we couldn't bear to miss out on, we'd want to pay in advance.

ETA, what Laura said is true -- we picked it all up at a counter, and then they took us over to the women's department to try on and make any returns. We returned shoes where we picked up -- we just tried them on immediately and made a decision.

In the stores I've been in, they have a specific desk for picking up online orders, so I'd have to go to one of the women's departments that has a changing room area and then come back to return, or return in that department. I'm more apt to take everything home, try it on there, and return later.

If you make a stylist appointment, I think this would be a good strategy, and I know Suz has done it when she's ordered in the US and come over the border to get items.

I don't think it is tacky at all. It is a good strategy. I have gone with that intention but never had to return anything on the spot. The ladies at Nordstrom's have always been SO kind about it. I tell them up front that I want to try things on in the dressing room and possibly return.

My only comment is to be patient because the lines can be VERY long sometimes and it may take a while.

Good luck !

I am commenting late, but I think they would actually prefer that. You can't judge a garment's fit from an online picture. You have to try it on either in the store or at home. I feel more comfortable trying things on in the comfort of my home. Returns are part of the process.

Not tacky at all, and yes, I've done it (though typically I find it more convenient to try on at home first.) Nordstrom won't have a problem with it.

So, I'm thinking about ordering online and choosing the "pick up in store" option, trying everything on in the store and returning what doesn't work on the spot.
is that really tacky?
have any of you guys done it?
