Great insights, Lisa. You learned a great deal from this exercise. WELL DONE. And I had fun observing the process. You are ready for Fall.

(My one-in-one-out principle is not as exact as yours. I can purge 5 frocks and not replace the space in my wardrobe with frocks).

Warm grey vs cool grey....DUH! No wonder I was having a hard time last night with my greys!

Thank you for sharing your insights - it is really helpful for me!

Suz-It has been a challenge to now tame the shopping demon for a little while. I'm trying to wear all my new things as quickly as I can to temper the beast. :)

Gaylene and ManidipaM-Getting to see the new items compared to the old one's in these posts has really helped me feel comfortable with my purges. I have found it a a lot easier "to let go" of items when they are compared side by side. I am usually a very slow closet purger.

CocoLion-Thanks! DH thinks I am spending way too much time on my closet lately. :)

Shevia-Neat, it sounds like you have a very successful closet purge going on!

I find myself nodding with the comments here. As I make room in my closet for my trip shopping spree I find myself getting rid of categories more than one in one out - out with the misshapen knits, in with the silky tops! Out with (some of) the rounder toes in with the pointy and so on.

You have put a lot of thought into this process which I truly admire. One of these days I am going on the one-in, one-out plan too! Your example is inspiring and motivating Lisa.

Yes, it's a bit long-winded this careful shopping and wardrobe curating, innit? So much easier to pick up a pretty and bring it home without too much thought and just stuff it in the wardrobe....

Until it's time to wear it and you're flailing around trying to find a match and when you're done the closet's a mess and you are running late... and you're still not sure so you either settle for feeling iffy all day or leave it and wear something old... until comes the day you find you have 5 very similar blue shirts and have never worn three...or doors that won't shut on a jumble where you can only find what you remember and maybe not even then.

Eh, yeah. I think the first scenario is a smidge less painful. But it is painful. Why I hate shopping. But I love the purging. The discipline of exact one in, one out is more than I have dared though.

As for these purchases, having seen and admired your other items, #3 made me gasp---you look so lovely in that!---and the new shoes look fantastic! So funky-looking and yet practical.

I really found your reflections interesting, Lisa. I also think that One In/One Out is easier in theory than in reality. I like how you've consciously chosen the items that don't fit your current wardrobe goals and been willing to let them go to let your new purchases take centre stage. My problem has always been to keep my oldies in "reserve" instead of making those kinds of hard decisions. I also agree that shopping goes in waves so it makes sense to do a major overhaul when a season hits the right notes for your style.

It's been an interesting read and I've gained some insights into my own shopping patterns from your analysis and musings. Thanks for letting me shop alongside you on this NAS! And enjoy your new things--you've made some good choices!

Okay. I am back. And on a computer vs. a phone. Now I can see the photos properly.

First of all, I stand by my earlier statement; some of those items you're replacing are pretty darned fab in themselves, so no wonder you had a struggle! I really like your grey jacket, for example. But I hear you on "green" grey vs. "blue" grey and I understand the issue. The new jacket injects a bit of modern fun as well as edge, so I think you have made a good choice. Ditto for the booties (if they feel too high, they are not worth keeping) and for the black top, which needs no excuse. It's quite elegant. I also think your jeans choices are good.

Returning to your reflections...apart from my outright wardrobe holes or purchases intended to replace worn out items, I wasn't sure what I'd be replacing, either. I don't know whether Sveta knew in advance, but for me, it's been a process a bit more like what you describe. I get the item home, try it with various other things in the closet, and figure out a). what it's quite similar to, and could replace; or b). what I'm simply fed up with trying to style and feel this item could improve upon, even if an a very associative way. So...it might be a top that would work with the same bottoms....or it might be a top that would allow me to make new outfits with different bottoms.

I hear you about the work of refreshing a wardrobe. In your case, you did a pretty big overhaul this year, and that makes it tougher. But you chose very well. Enjoy your new things!

ETA: I totally relate to the fact that once you start it is hard to stop. I did a huge set of NAS orders, and promptly ordered stuff from J. Crew as well!

Lisa, your reflections are very interesting here. It's so true that shopping can build its own momentum. And yet also true that some years are better than others. And we have to strike when the iron is hot!

I haven't found it too difficult to decide which items to purge where I am doing a one In one out. I just think about the items that no longer win my love, and those are the ones I pass along. But then again, some of the things you're passing along are pretty fab in themselves, so that makes it a bigger challenge.

On my phone so I can't see the pictures in much detail. But I will come back.

Hi,

I have finally made it to my final post for my NAS closet purge. This was the hardest round.

To recap, here are the first 4 posts.

Round One was here.

Round Two was here.

Round Three was here.

Round Four was here.

Now onto round five and then for some reflections.

#1-Black Leather Jacket and Teal Scarf

New NAS items.

#2-Grey Leather Jacket and Pink Scarf.

I was very excited when I found the black leather jacket. I purchased the grey one years ago as a "I'm settling" purchase because I got tired of looking for a black leather jacket that worked for me. Solid blacks were always too harsh so I went with grey. The grey never made me happy and was hard to remix in my heavy cool shades of blue colored wardrobe. I'm happy to pass along the grey jacket to my sister who looks much nicer in warm greys. The pink scarf is another warmer shade that never remixed well in my closet.

#3-Bow Blouse

New NAS item. This was an impulse purchase and I have no item it's replacing right now. Shame on me! But I do adore the top and have already worn it twice.

#4-Peplum "Suit"

These are two more items growing my wardrobe. I have wanted to expand my business capsule a little so hopefully this outfit will work for that need.

#5-Dot Print Sweater

This is one item I am now returning. I wanted to break away from team blues, and while this sweater does that, I already picked up a new sweater in tan I like better than this one so back it goes.

#6-Black Suede Booties

New NAS item. I really liked these booties (Clarks Rosepoint Dew) but the heel is too high for me to sport them as an 8 hour shoe which is my real need.

#7-Black Buckle Shoes

New non NAS item. (Aerosoles Episotic) I just adore these shoes. I think they will work very well with my new jeans and they have a much lower heel than the black booties above. Plus they are shoes and not boots or booties. My first "winter" friendly shoe that is not a boot. My only other shoes are black loafers that I don't wear in winter because the top of my exposed foot gets cold. Unfortunately they are not replacing anything, just adding to my shoe collection.

There were a number of additional NAS items I purchased and were returned after YLF votes of nay, or fit or material issues, so they are not summarized here. Only the items I planned to keep have been covered in my purging posts.

Now onto some observations.

1. One In One Out is not easy to do, at least for me. It took me hours to figure out what items were really going to work in my current closet and what items have to be returned.

2. Shopping without a plan leads to returns and orphans. I've been a member of YLF for years, so one would think by now I would know better. And it probably would have made my shopping and closet purging much faster if I had known in advance what items I needed to replace instead of figuring it out "after the fact."

3. When it's the right time, you find what you need. Last year I only picked up 3 items from NAS. This year I picked up over a dozen! I think shopping goes in waves and sometimes you just hit the jackpot. I think my new pieces are great upgrades and for many of the items I am purging I am truly ready to let them go to new homes with little regret that I am letting items go.

4. Refreshing a wardrobe is work. I tried on many sizes and made quite a few trips back and forth to Nordie's during the sale as I tried to streamline my purchases and figure out which items truly fit well and would work for me. I know I've gone too many times when the SA start greeting me by name.

5. It's easy to get overwhelmed and loose focus. Looking online, in the store, and sorting through all my orders, it was very easy to say "I'll do it later" and then forget about it. If I had purchased less overall I probably would have found it easier to shift through everything.

6. Once you start it gets hard to stop. Once I got the shopping maven started, it was hard to stop. You get used to the thrill of new items and coming home to new packages after long days at work. The first few days of no new items to sort through felt "odd."

I'm looking forward to wearing all my new goodies and also to smarter shopping for NAS next year.

Thanks for looking and reading!
