Before moving to California I used to live in an entirely sales-tax-free state. Maybe as a result of DE and NH offering tax-free shopping, a lot of the neighboring states have tax-free exemptions on clothing and shoes (and groceries usually)... I know PA, NJ, NY, and MA all do.

Like you, I order in-store through an SA in a tax-free state, and have items delivered to the store (I work nearby and live in another state, so tax-free shopping is a bonus). This has never happened yet, and I appreciate the heads up to be on alert—I’ve had more trouble with my orders being off lately. I do know that my SA rings up items through the store. Perhaps there’s something your SA needs to do to circumvent the tax?

That’s an interesting tip. I would expect the SAs in the spending store to be able to adjust to shipping to another state, but maybe it’s not automatic and has to be triggered somehow.

Diana, in California some food is taxed and some is not. Most ‘ingredients’ aren’t but prepared food, even from the grocery, is. Makes for an interesting receipt.

MA is interesting. We don't pay tax on clothing under $175, and anything over that you pay tax only on the part over $175. Clothing is considered a "necessity" like food and shelter here. ;D

Re: Nordstrom. I have only ever ordered online or in a store in this state, but what tends to happen is that the order confirmation shows sales tax on the full amount but it does not get charged to my card when they actually process the order. It's very odd that you got charged, and I hope you get the money back!

Here's a fun fact: In MA, yarn and fabric are not taxed because they are considered "clothing." Deconstructed clothing, I guess.

Are you going to be able to recover those extra monies, LynninRI? It seems to me that you should not have to pay sales tax if RI doesn't charge it.

Your statement is true JAileen...which is why folks need to check...

And yes, Janet, RI doesn't charge sales tax on clothing - not to worry though..our income tax makes up for it (I am a CPA and it is so.much.fun...lol)

I wonder if it had been different if you had simply ordered online. Online, I think tax is charged based on the delivery address. The SA probably just rang things up on the register and mailed them. And the register was programmed to charge tax for the SA’s location.

So RI doesn't charge sales tax on clothing? That's interesting. I think it's a very small percentage of states who consider clothing tax exempt. Here in MD our tax rate is relatively low at 6%. I never thought about looking at that, but it's good to know.

Good morning -

I just got off the phone with a lovely customer service person at Nordstroms and wanted to alert everyone to a potential problem...

I live in RI - where we have a small, understocked store. So, my NAS shopping is done via a SA in the store and is shipped. When I started checking my orders versus charges on my account the amounts didn't match - WHY? Because many of the items were shipped from stores that charge sales tax on clothing - in my case this amounts to over $200 charged to my account that I don't need to pay. The shipments arrive at my house with packing lists but no receipts - just those delightful little tags so there was no receipt showing the sales tax.

Sorry this is long and rambling BUT check your shipped in orders for sales tax folks....
