They told me to buy a size tighter than I would think, because jeans inevitably stretch out, and then shrink back up again when you wash them, and they will stretch as needed to accommodate hips but stay more snug in the waist. Don't know if that's helpful, but it's a good reminder that jeans will always fit the most tightly right when you buy them, so you definitely don't want to buy when they're huge on the waist.</p> <p>That said, the Gap and J Crew have gotten much better at shaping their jeans for those of us with smaller waists and thicker thighs.
