I don't like to buff too much because I think it weakens the nails. In terms of supplements, I've had good luck with Viviscal, which is for hair but has a good effect on fingernails, too. I've been taking it for a couple of years.

Thanks for the recs. Minimalist, I'm taking plain biotin, from Jarrow brand. I got it at the health food store. I looked at some of the hair/skin/nails combo supplements, but I figured I'd start with one component at a time and see if I saw a difference.

I was recenlty gifted a glass nail file and I really like the way it feels. I paint mine using Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure. It lasts a solid week and then comes off fairly easily. By that time, I'm bored of the color and ready for something new.

I would also suggest a cuticle oil. I use the apricot one by Essie. I've been using it for a few months and my cuticles have never looked better.

Re nail buffing......You don't have to use the most abrasive sections. You can use the last couple just to polish and shine. This is great for times when you're not using nail polish.

Team glass file.

There's buffing that's abrasive (removes nail) and there's buffing (though maybe it's called something else) that adds a powder and works it to a shine. My nails are too thin for the abrasive kind, and I don't have patience for maintaining the additive type.

What biotin supplements are you taking?

Get a glass nail file, you won't regret it. Much smoother than a typical emery board. Any brand will work. I can't help with buffing as I find it to weaken my nails if using an abrasive buffer. Try a good clear coat if you want shine. There are some that purport to help brittle nails and such. I can't recommend a brand but Google can help. If you want to get into polish, there are a number of threads here that can help.

I bought this Revlon Shape N Buff recently. It has 4 buffing surfaces.....two on each side. You start on #1 and proceed to #4 (buff). It also has two files....fine and coarse. It really helps to smooth your nails and the buffing makes them shine.

So I've been a fingernail minimalist for years - I paint my toenails but very rarely my fingernails. I usually just clipped them every week or two, since once they got to a much of a length they'd usually break off or get caught on something. But recently I started taking biotin supplements and it's making a big difference - suddenly I've got real nails that aren't just disintegrating when they grow past the ends of my fingers.

I've realized that I don't even own a nail file anymore - does anyone have any recommendations for files, maybe buffing, all that jazz? Pretend I'm a total newb about this sort of thing.
