@Lyn* - Ahhh, the length of the coat. I've heard several stories from my dad about how he and some of his friends burned their short coats as soon as they could. And I remember my mom picking up his long coats from the cleaners and I couldn't understand why we couldn't wash them at home.

I hate wearing lab coats as well. Especially when people don't pay attention and hang them like regular clothes on the hooks so that in outside of one coat touches the inside of the next. Then I'm scared to wear it because I'm not sure what someone was messing with when were wearing it.

OMG, that hits way too close home! If those were my mice, there would also be a polka dotted green one as well as one with a Superman blue cape that would jump straight at me as soon as I open the box. I am not kidding, I work with some slightly crazy mice who like to jump out of containers all the time. I am yet to loose one (I would be in big trouble) but I did spend a good part of one afternoon chasing after some escapees that were eventually caught.

It's all about wanting what you can't have :). I love the clean white lines and authority!

Here in software, the dress code is sooo casual. And authority is oftentimes conveyed by volume

I know one professor who was truly evil - we called her the Dream Killer behind her back, because every year she would pick 3 favourites to "succeed" and make sure the rest of us descended in to dark dark shadows.

Eww, I hate lab coats!!! My white coat has so many germs on it, even though I make sure that I get a clean one every week (mental note to go pick up one today) - eww, eww, eww, eww, ewe ... they make me look like I know what I'm doing sometimes, and the length means I give orders, not suggestions

I liked the other fashion-related "truth" too:

Not only do our lab coats make us look dapper and charming, those same coats look even better strewn unceremoniously over a standing lamp while we make passionate love to you.

I've always loved the look of a labcoat, and have been secretly jealous for years that computer scientists don't get to wear them.

I'm a big fan of this one:

A personal tragedy can turn a scientist evil.

Truth: Very few scientists are legitimately evil, though the number rises if you ask graduate students to characterize their advisers. Besides, it’s hard to be truly evil when you don’t have any practical skills.

I don't think my professors is evil, but I can think of a few professors that may be.

Hahaha! Sooo true. Last week in the lab I had some fruit flies who were supposed to have either red eyes or white eyes. Somehow some of them had mysteriously developed dark brown eyes. Too bad none of them were plaid. If that had happened I just might have to start studying that.

(PS - I actually know Adam Ruben, the author of that article. He is a scientist who moonlights as a stand-up comedian, and is one of the funniest people and one of the best storytellers I know. You should read his book!)
for all the scientists on the forum...

http://sciencecareers.sciencem.....aredit.a12

8 myths half way into the article.

my fave, because it is fashion related.

Myth 5: Experiments always yield data that teach or reveal something.

Truth: Let’s say you’re doing an experiment with five mice. These particular mice will turn either yellow or blue. So you walk into the lab expecting to see five yellow mice, which will point to one explanation, or five blue mice, which will point to the other. Instead you would see one yellow mouse, one green mouse, one striped mouse, one plaid mouse (dead), and one mouse that has somehow sewn himself a little blue jacket, though he doesn’t wear it all the time.
