I am also a blue dress and black watch plaid lover, so I get it. Funny story about diverging from your aims but who can blame you when the results are so great?? It sounds like you had wonderful thrifting success last year -- here's to more of the same in 2024. And I absolutely love your tortoiseshell accessory!

Fun review! I love the red of the dress in pic 2. Amazing to get good swimsuits second hand!
How wonderful to have a second baby granddaughter. The one that I have is the light of my life and just makes me melt.

Haha, I'm glad you are enjoying your illicit purchases! I can see why you like a striped shirt, it looks great on you. And such great luck with the swimsuits! I agree, they are as bad as buying new bras.

Congrats on the new grandbaby!

Congratulations on your new grandchild!
Love the last outfit! And a second one with the kitty :)
I’m laughing at your no buy of summer dresses and blazers goals. I had my own no buy goal - sweaters. Bought two second hand and they are perfect!

Why is Black Watch so irresistible?! I was just admiring a sherpa lined Black Watch shirt jacket at LL Bean, when I need absolutely no more Black Watch clothing. Although I am half Scottish, so maybe it tracks.

Seriously, I have been where you are, thinking of retirement, counting the dresses and blazers, wondering what the future holds. Enjoy your cuddly armful and wear the heck out of those swimsuits!

Mazel Tov on the new grandchild, another thing I'm terribly envious of.

Such a great end of year assessment. Well done on replacing those essential items and also being flexible to adding items you love. I have a complete love of tartan, so I would be hard pressed to pass up a great black watch tartan blazer too.

I had to laugh at your review of how you did in relation to your original goals! But that's how it goes sometimes, right? Life happens, and blue dresses and Black Watch blazers are awfully hard to pass up when perfect! Maybe you can let a one of the older dresses go. You look great!

I've loved reading all your 2023 summaries, so here's mine in case it's also of interest.

I went into 2023 with the wardrobe goal of only replacing defunct items, not expanding. I have different budget priorities right now, my closet is deep and adequate to present needs, and with retirement on the horizon my future lifestyle and needs are less predictable.

Main points:
1. I do not need any more dresses. I have about 15 summer dresses, most of them sleeveless, most of them blue.

2. I do not need any more blazers. I love them, but opportunities for wear are scarce.

3. Replace my Gap blue pinstriped shirt that fell apart.

4. Replace my white ugly-chic comfort sandals that fell apart.

5. Added: needed more sandals; my entire box of summer footwear disappeared and wasn't found until October.

6. Both my (old) swimsuits were discovered, while packing for a lakeside summer vacation, to have perished elastic.

How I did:
1. First purchase of the year: a sleeveless blue dress. Land's End, thrifted, impeccably tailored. Je ne regrette rien. As well, my sister passed on a red linen shift dress, in a cut extremely flattering on my IT/apple shape, which I now love best of all the summer dresses (and wore over a black T for the Christmas season).

2. Last purchase of the year: a blazer. Black Watch (one of which I already own), this one slightly oversized menswear (which I realized I was missing). This has expanded the options for my favourite Power Suit.

3. Found my replacement striped shirt at the Gap outlet, visiting daughter in her new city. It skews more masculine than I expected. Also, received a menswear blue striped shirt from my sister (Ralph Lauren, scratchy linen) and my daughter (softer linen-cotton blend).

4. White sandals were found thrifting at the lakeside destination. Clark's, with thick cork footbed, new with tags. They were very welcomed as indoor shoes in a cottage with hard floors and a no shoes rule. Later on, I discovered the straps are a bit tight for all-day wear for work during swell-inducing hot weather. I wonder if I can stretch them?

5. I added a new pair of Walmart brand Birkenstock style sandals in black (I usually go through a pair a year, as beach shoes). Later I thrifted a black pair of elevated gladiator sandals, so I made it through the summer without the elusive box.

6. Swimsuit shopping! More depressing than shoe or bra shopping for the hard-to-fit, and no luxury of time to do it in. And yet ... In the local thrift shop I found not one, but two, swimsuits that were just my style, and a perfect fit once I got them home to try on!

One change in my shopping focus... I now have a second baby granddaughter. (One of the new budget priorities and lifestyle changes...) So shopping still is fun!
