Approprio - I think of essentials as those items that I always want to have in my wardrobe because they are either essential to my style or just work for my lifestyle / climate. I do think the duplication is often a good indicator and think that they could be statement pieces. White shirts seem to be very much an essential to your style.

Rachylou - it sounds as though a puffer is a winter essential for you - because it is functional. I really like puffer jackets, so I think they are stylish too!

Your items are great!

I’m always slightly confused too about Essentials. I don’t think my Essentials help my style; I think they define/limit it. They help me in a functional way (like to stay warm and not get caught in machinery). Except maybe the white sweater. The white sweater helps me stylewise...

I'm always slightly confused about what makes an essential, and whether statement pieces can also be essentials? Now I wonder if the clue is in the duplication. You see, I'm also a fan of white shirts. Some are straightforward, others are statements. All are essential.

And you can never have too many fine gauge knits.

Thanks Bijou. I will definitely keep an eye out for them now. Someone must sell them here. I agree about buying jeans from O/S. I will only do it if I know the brand and sizing. Or from asos, because of their generous returns policy.

Angie, I love how you emphasise essentials from time to time. They work very hard in my wardrobe.

Barbara Diane - I know that feeling of trying to find a good basic and everything just not hitting the mark.

Mthsofthemoon - I love your tops, they have a lovely drape, giving shape without being skin tight. These are items that I would love too!

Brooklyn - I cannot recommend the Mother jeans enough, they are literally my most comfortable jeans, that I often pass over others just because these are a dream to wear. I bought mine at some local boutiques, there are two here in Perth that stock them (Emporia in Subiaco and Boheme Luxe in Cottesloe). I really like to try on jeans to get the right fit and for us in Australia, paying for delivery costs from the US can get expensive if the sizing is not right. I take a size 26 in these jeans, but need a 27 in AG Prima Cigarette and Jodie crops.

Cee - you make me laugh!

Sal - it sounds as though you have found a formula that just works for you and your lifestyle. You always look great, those essentials are just so important.

Nice pieces Bijou - I do agree with duplicating jeans and basic sweaters, pullovers and tees. And running tights too:)

My winter essentials this year were
- skinny and straight jeans (three pairs)
- black cropped pants (three pairs)
- black tops (three again)
- light footwear (had four options)
- knee length loose long sleeve shifts (two)

Then I wore a lot of large pendants and statement jackets and coats. That was about all!!

Not excessive. I have this striped knit top from Zara and I duplicated it in plain black and in ivory, for the same reasons as you.
I am very curious about Mother jeans. Did you buy them online or here? I can't recall seeing that brand here. I think Firecracker is also a fan of the brand.

Ditto. I also duplicate or get one of each color. Here is an example of the knit top I duplicated from A.T Factory last year (I also have in black). Also duplicated the BR short sleeve knit. They are all workhorses for me under a variety of blazers or solo. I really like your long sleeve cream knit top. Lastly, I agree white shirts seem so basic but are very tricky.

Angie’s post today really resonated with me because if I can’t get my essentials I really feel as though my wardrobe is not working. Winter was very good to me in finding some of these elusive, yet deceptively simple items.

I found a good knit in Zara and bought it in grey, cream and blush and a spare.
Now that may sound excessive, but I love wearing this knit, it launders well and was extremely affordable. The spare is saved for when the first needs to be replaced.

My other essential duplicate was some skinny jeans, MotherThe Looker jeans. Incredibly comfortable and a great fit. I bought them in a dark wash and black and have worn them constantly since buying them.

I am always on the hunt for white shirts. The are so good in an office environment and this one by Cue is a firm favourite. I like to layer it under jackets and sheathdresses. It is georgette and is not transparent, something that I really dislike about so many white shirts.
