Thanks Unfrumped. I completely agree with everything you said. I understand minimalism less as numbers but more like "just enough". The blogger of Into Mind actually wrote a great post about that. And that you have to differenciate between a minimal aesthetic and a minimal approach to style.

Good plans, Astrid!
I'm not a minimalist-pusher, but I do think that there's a benefit from trying to stay "flexibly minimal" and tolerating more repeats and mix& match (items chosen for versatility--either a sweater goes with both pants & skirts, or you have a limited number of silhouettes, and a refined color palette)--that sort of thing. Because it's just very likely that you are going to evolve more rapidly in the next few years and want to tweak things here and there. So it's not the number, and it's not buying a whole new wardrobe every season, but not going too deep into lots of one thing or another and then wishing you could make some upgrades, either for "maturing" or for new job situations. So the minimalist part is more about identifying your "essentials" (jeans, warm trousers, types of skirts, pullovers, or what) and having enough of each for convenience, laundry and so on, but not having a bursting closet and then no budget to change things up a bit. And being able to add a fun "statement" item (can be a "casual statement" such as a great sweater or a coat in a fun color.)

Yes, a medium or dark grey skirt might be a good replacement. Or a neutral blue. I'm having an eye on the skirt below, maybe something like this. Although this is wool, a better replacement would maybe be some kind of heavy cotton fabric so that the skirt would be wearable in spring too. And yes, definitely pinks and purples too! I had a grey waterfall cardigan and then one of my current cotton cardigans is grey. I do have a dark grey wool cardigan on order from Woolovers that hasn't arrived yet. And I had the grey checked dress I passed down to my sister. Oh and my peacoat is a very dark grey, although it looks like black in pictures.

I'm glad your winter wardrobe isn't full of holes. Do you think a medium or charcoal grey skirt would be a good direction to go when replacing the black skirt?

Blues, greens, & berries will be splendid on you as a summer (I keep forgetting your hair isn't as warm as it looks). And don't forget pinks/purples, unless those aren't your preferred colours. That explains why you love grey, too. I don't recall seeing you in much grey?

Thanks Lynne. :)

Thanks Alasse! Yes, I think navy and denim is definitely going to be one of my neutrals. Then probably grey, I love grey. From charcoal to a soft light grey, it's all lovely. For colors probably all kinds of berry shades... I'm also loving my soft greens and blues. Here's my Pinterest Color board. When I'm thinking more grown up I'm thinking less sporty casual and more structure, mainly. We'll see how that translates to real life. I haven't made a list of what exactly needs replacing, but I've sorted my whole wardrobe recently and have a much better grasp on what's there now. Although there are definitely still things in there that aren't ideal. It doesn't look all that bad for the coming colder months, so that's good. I definitely need jeans/pants and shoes are a priority too. The coat would be nice, but I can make do with what I have. My black skirt also doesn't work all that well anymore and it's a wardrobe workhorse. It has started to shift around when I wear it, really annoying. And It looks very bleak when I look at warm weather clothes, so I'll definitely have my work cut out for me next spring.

Thanks Elizabeth! Yes, I'll keep you all up to date. I think documenting it on here will be a great way to keep on track.

Ruth, that's a good idea, to sign up for email notifications for certain sites. I still have to unsubscribe a few too.

Thanks Angie! :)

Isabel, thanks. And yes, I think she really gets to the point. It's a good read.

Thanks Diane! I agree that jeans are a good way to start, I was thinking relaxed skinnies.

Your plan sounds great Astrid! Some sound ideas. I like Dianthus's suggestion re-neutrals too. I hope you can seek out the right kind of places to obtain your echo friendly quality pieces from. A good pair of jeans and finding the perfect winter coat are good places to start. Well done on the weight loss too

Congratulations on the successful weight loss, Astrid, and your excellent plans for the future! You're looking great.

I could really see you choosing a specific colour palette/set of base neutrals along with your possibly-minimal wardrobe. I imagine denim/navy would be one of your neutrals?

I will be very interested to see how you progress in this. Any thoughts on what is more grown-up to you and your style? Do you have a list of pieces that need replacing due to being worn out?

Thanks Dianthus! Focusing on specific neutrals and colors is a great idea. I will think about it.

Thanks Meredith! I probably have a year or so left. Can't say it for sure, but that's the plan. I'm not planning to buy work specific stuff, but things that I can wear right now. That said, I definitely want to make sure most of the pieces can double up as work wear. So nothing too casual. But I think business casual at most would be fine in a future workplace, I don't think I'd need true business dress. It's a rather casual bunch in my field...

Good decisions Astrid. I think it is really important to use consistent principles to manage a small wardrobe as the pieces need to be more interchangeable than in a larger wardrobe. Perhaps you should give thought to the neutrals and colors you will focus on in your selections to ensure that they all play well together.

Thanks Caro! I'm going to bookmark these now and will have a look. I have already found some sites in German and also some online shops. There are also quite a few stores in Berlin, one is actually not that far away from me. I'll go have a look at it the next time I'm going for a walk.

Thanks Ruth.

Thanks Sharan. I already have deleted most of my bookmarks, I had collected a huge amount of them. I wanted to change wich websites/shops I go to for a first look. And there are also some B&M options, as I said above. Being in Berlin is an advantage, in this case.

Eva, good luck with the underwear shopping. I'm also making do because I just can't find decent replacements. It's definitely something I keep looking for. And thanks!

Thanks Isabel. I know Into Mind and I've read a lot of her posts a while ago. But it might be good to come back to them right now!

Good luck Astrid! I have been wanting to update my underwear drawer for months but have yet to find an ecofriendly option that doesn't cost the earth. So I keep wearing my old ones instead, sigh. That's a reason why I find it so much easier to shop secondhand!

Sounds like a well thought-out plan, and it makes good sense. Good work!

Along the lines of what Caro suggests, I would look for independent shops/boutiques that consciously select eco-friendly products, too.

Thank you so much, Suz!

It's definitely going to be a slow process. I still have to see if the LE coat works out, otherwise I'll probably start with a pair of jeans. I also need a new belt. And a beanie, before it gets really cold.

At this moment in time, several aspects come together that make thinking about further wardrobe planning almost a necessity. First of, I lost quite a bit of weight over the last year and I'm planning to keep it down. This means that many things in my wardrobe are now too big. I did alter my two plaid skirts for example, but that won't be possible for all items. Additionally a lot of my things have simply come to the end of their natural lifespan - they are just plain worn out. Other than that I'm also feeling the desire for a more grown up look overall, I've posted about that a few months ago. So all in all there's a lot going on.

I would call my wardrobe moderate, but so far that was mostly due to a small budget and not because of a conscious decision. That said, I feel good about repeating outfits I do like and I like to wear my favourites again and again. So thinking of a small curated wardrobe isn't a leap. Dare I say minimal? Going forward I want to work on being more deliberate about my choices. I want to create a small cohesive wardrobe that really reflects my style aspirations and the more grown up look I want to go for. I don't have a number in mind, I guess I'll just see what works and what doesn't as I go along.

The other decision I made (that in my mind goes fairly well together with a small wardrobe) is that I want to shop "green" brands as often as possible going forwards. I have certain things that I won't change (bras for example) but if there's an alternative I want to use it. I won't create too many rules about this because I want shopping to still be fun. But I want this to be a rough guideline in wardrobe building. Higher quality, but less pieces. Responsible shopping. Finding places in my wardrobe for old favourites and saying goodbye to the pieces that won't work anymore.

I'm looking forward to where this will take me! And I would love to hear your thoughts on this.
