Features that make it essential: the semi-sheer banding at the neckline and hem makes it dressier than a normal tee. It’s fluid but doesn’t dwarf me. It is a fabulous background for a statement necklace or scarf. It’s not super delicate and holds up well to laundering, though I line dry it.

Suz, you nailed it totally.

And when the black and cobalt VC tops wear out totally-those are the colors I wear most often-I will probably wail. I haven’t found another top that I like as much and is as versatile. These babies are workhorses.

They might be what Angie calls "completer" pieces. I think patterned silk blouses are that for me. I DO need them -- they "complete" my outfits and while they claim more attention than my essentials, they are not exactly statements. But they're not essential in themselves.

A few years ago a pencil skirt in a core neutral or colour would have been an essential for you, no?

That VC top is great -- no wonder you duped it. What will you use when it's no longer available/ workable? What features make it so essential?

I remember, last year, when the essentials discussion came around, I kept trying to argue that if someone's style ALWAYS featured a statement blazer, then a category of "statement blazers" was a valid essentials category for that individual. Gradually, I came to understand that I was wrong If the item is the statement piece in your outfit, then it is a statement piece. Some of your pretty, patterned tops definitely look like statement items to me. FWIW, I think the essentials are a neutral backbone of items around which you build your outfits.

Yes, now that is the thing I’m just starting to get: Your mixed media top example. One shape, but certain bright variants float to the top as statements.

But barely get, I’ll admit. Don’t think I can identify on sight. I really also like to stick to one silhouette and change up colour and pattern... combined with the fact that I’m a maximalist... and I feel a lot of the pattern/colour I wear does NOT in fact stand out much... I easily confuse myself (Angie probably either sighs deeply after so long or exclaims ‘this is why I have a job!’, lol!).

Thanks, Angie! That helps me revise/edit.

So the way I’m thinking of it: I have some categories that are essentials (soft blouses, wedge heels, the tee shirts) that I’ve duplicated or bought similar items. However, certain of those items are more attention-grabbing and become a statement piece due to their color, pattern, or bold details (bell sleeves.) Even though they are just as essential as, say, a dark suede bootie, they are more of a statement piece. In contrast, the darker/solid/less detailed pieces in those categories are more background pieces and not where your attention is focused.

You did well, Kari. Nicely done. GREST visuals.

I'd take out the bright tops though - too much of a statement. Same goes for your bold blouses and wedged pumps. Try to be more specific about your essentials in those categories - and take the statement pieces out. (I know statements can be workhorses, but they can't be an essential and a statement, IYKWIM).

Please pop the list onto the blog post, when you have a moment.

Follow up thought/question: I struggle with whether a patterned item could be a staple or not. Because the soft blouses, patterned or no, are statement items I’m torn, but they are a HUGE part of my wardrobe and essential to its function, and I keep duplicating the same general shape/item in different colors or patterns.

I like your list and your finds. I can relate to it because I don’t really do blazers or tailored pants much either, but I still want to look put together and fashionable. And who doesn’t love a pair of super comfy pumps of wedges?

I am always interested in looking over essentials lists! Keeping this short so that it won’t crash before I post. Here are my current essentials:
(My signature colors tend to be forest green, cobalt, burgundy, and now olive; Black has become my primary neutral.)

• Moto jackets or open pleather jackets with a fun detail such as a signature color (forest green, burgundy) or cut (peplum back.) This is an easier top layer for me than most blazers and carries me through much of the year under a coat or as a topper on its own.
• Slim or skinny jeans in a signature color or black.
• A solid dark green fit and flare or sheath dress. An easy base to pair with a jacket, shoes, and a statement scarf or necklace.
• Trench raincoat in a signature color
• Wool coat in a signature color
• This mixed media tee. I gradually brought all 5 of these colors, though the black and cobalt are worn more often. Super easy to dress down with casual pants, tuck into jeans, or dress up a bit tucked into nicer pants or skirt with a jacket.
• Low, chunky, ultra-comfy pumps or wedges
• Long beaded necklace
• Suede double-zippered booties
• Soft, floaty blouse (pussycat bow or bell sleeve)
• Knitwear in a signature color with fun details such as a cool print or zipper detail
