I am intrigued by your comment Neha. Is there any discussion about this in India? It’s complex as clothing is a large employer but I am interested if damage to rivers and waste and child labour are considerations when people choose clothing.

They both are and aren’t here- I do know people that choose purely on price and fashion - teens choosing lots of Shein items for example. Other friends buy a lot of second hand or buy from companies trying to limit waste or not use child labour.

I must have missed this the first time around. Thank you for all your hard work putting this list together. I just ordered a pair of Nisolo sandals. Because my foot does run narrow, I'm hoping they will work out.

I missed this first time around, so I’m glad to see this list now. What a terrific resource! I’m a big Athleta fan, when the cuts work for me (good for pants, but their dresses and jumpsuits are too long in the body, for instance). Thank you for sharing, Jenn. I’m bookmarking it for future reference.

This sustainable brand list is great.

But, I'm still wondering why do people are actually crazy after sustainable brands.

It's creating enormous buzz.

Please, let me know, why is it so.

I've made this post a favorite so I can find it later! I'm in the same size range and, while I think you're a bit more flowy and arty (I have a little more classic and a touch of vintage) I feel like I would be one of those college roommates borrowing all your clothes!

With a limited at budget and two kids in college, I've not taken the dive into sustainability because I know it takes time to figure out and typically costs more (at least at the outset). Right now, I am concentrated on a slightly smaller wardrobe and far less churn than in the past. I do love Athleta (yes to the legging with the drawstring!) and knowing their values makes it a little easier to buy there, rather than a less expensive source!

Ooh thanks for the reminder of Cariuma - they've been on my radar as a Brazilian brand that does trainers with cream (not white) soles! But I have yet to try them myself - do you have wide feet, if you don't mind me asking? And are they really as comfortable as they seem?

Angie, I know I responded to you partially earlier, but I also wanted to thank you because I wouldn't know about some of these brands without YLF. Pahsko was a brand spotlight, and you pointed me to Miz Mooz. And, of course, you spotlighted Warp&Weft just after I bought my first jeans from them, so we were in sync on that. There's a good chance I learned about Universal Standard here too.

rachylou, "degrowth" is starting to be a buzzword, but I'm glad to see it. A book I read recently had the insightful comment that, in nature, constant growth is generally either parasitic or cancerous.

Jaime, so true about Eileen Fisher. She's been on this train since the 80s.

Aquamarine, hope you find it useful!

Joy, the color names would be helpful, though I'm guessing something that's been washed and worn wouldn't be a perfect color match regardless.

Style Fan, I have been looking at the Shelter Cardigan too! I am sitting on my hands because, given that it's going to be 85° this week (in February!) I probably don't need to add any sweaters.

Thank you for this helpful list, Jenn. I also have had good luck with EF on sale and Renew. I only wish that Renew would use the EF color names and give measurements but have had good luck knowing my EF sizes. I also try first to buy second hand, especially EF and good quality brands. I know that I can get a good price when I am ready to resale them.

Fantastic list and contains some surprises for me. Like Athleta. I will keep my eye out. I have a beautiful Gudjen Sjoden scarf and I am happy to see that name on the list. I do have a pair of Veja shoes (new but second hand) and they are my most comfortable sneakers but I have narrow feet. Eileen Fisher always holds a special place in my heart, if not my closet. She was doing sustainability from the beginning. Will reference this list, thanks!

Angie, Boden probably could go in my “maybe” category, but the truth of it is that it worked brilliantly on my size 10 body a decade ago, but I haven’t had a lot of luck with them on my size 18 body today and I rarely even check anymore. The sizes are there (yay!) but the cuts just haven’t felt right for me over the past several years. It might just be a style thing and it might be fit models. I’m not entirely sure!

LaPed, Esby looks great...I see several pieces that would fall in nicely with my 2020 desire for easy-care, easy-wear casual clothing. I'll check out Girlfriend Collective next time I'm in the market for gear, too!

Suz and Helena, I know we all have unique requirements for what brands work for us, but I think knowing what has worked for someone else can be super-useful as a starting point!

Thanks for sharing this Jenn - since BR and Gap are my go to's, hopefully Athleta will lead them (and ON) in the same direction!

Good list! I rely heavily on Patagonia and Athleta, as those brands both really go the distance and I have reasonably good luck with how they fit. Have you looked at Girlfriend Collective? They are a size-inclusive sportswear company that emphasizes recycled fabrics. They make my favorite sports bra (in Finds). Nice selection of leggings and loungewear too.

Another recent favorite is Esby. So far I only have their Lindsey jeans (two pairs!), but they make some beautiful linen tops/dresses/jumpsuits that I'm eying for summer. Some of their items only go up to XL, but others are available up to 3X or 4X.

FWIW, Nisolo and Sevilla Smith shoes didn't really work for me either. The comfort just wasn't there. Ditto Veja. Shoes are just difficult!

I envy your So Cal climate, because a lot of sustainable brands suit my warm-weather needs but don't really have a place in my cold-weather wardrobe. Elizabeth Suzann, Not Perfect Linen, and Only Child all fall into this category. Power of My People and Tradlands too, to some degree. Just so much cotton and linen, and loose airy fits! Amour Vert's knit modal tops have actually worked out great for me as they're substantial and warmer/cozier than cotton tops, and layer well, so they make a good winter baselayer.
