Next month I am going to a Silent Book Club. They are apparently in many cities and are geared toward introverts. You go and can visit for a few minutes and then everyone reads their book for an hour. After that, you can visit and talk about your book. Or not. It’s the only way I think I can get to the end of WEB DuBois’s Black Reconstruction. I want to know the content but the print is small and it’s pretty academic.

Mary, I listened to that on audiobook while on a road trip to Maine two summers ago and really enjoyed it!

My book club got so into the historical aspects of what we'd been reading that we share articles about local archaeological discoveries of African American and slave history in our area. There is a nature walk this weekend just a couple of miles from my home that tours the unmarked cemetery of patients of the Crownsville Hospital -- there is an annual "Say My Name" ceremony there that is very moving. It's somber stuff (even though our reading list has take a departure for less serious subjects), but we are feeling it's especially important to continue to read and learn these days.

Angie, that is a great idea! It makes me want to start a similar club!

I'm in a book club where we do all read the same book each month, but you're not required to have read the book in order to attend the meeting. More than once I've neglected to read the book, or have gotten bogged down and not finished it, and have been inspired to read or finish it based on the discussion at the meeting. At the end of the year people submit suggestions for the following year and we vote on them. The person who suggested the book for a given month is the one who leads the discussion.

I'm hosting in May and the book is Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt, which I LOVED.

I admit, I kind of like the “assignment” aspect of our book club — it gets me out of my comfort zone and reading things I otherwise might not gravitate towards. I also like that it gives me a bit of a deadline, which keeps me motivated. I’ve been reading more — and listening to more audiobooks — since joining the group.

Angie what a unique but inspired book group. Such a good way to bring people together in a way that gives structure but allows for, in fact encourages, individualism

I love this idea! What a refreshing change on the usual. Having to all read the same book can feel like "homework". Reminds me of some of my favorite podcasts where two women share books, movies or tv shows...or museum shows...that they love and why. In years past it was The High Low, sadly gone now. Currently it's Older and Wider.

Oh, that’s awesome!

I’m in a book club that I just love. It’s comprised mainly of ladies from my Pilates studio, including three of the instructors. It’s a very smart and thoughtful group, so the conversation is always great.

We do all read the same book, but no one gets any grief if they haven’t yet read it when we meet. There are about 8 of us if everyone attends but it usually ends up being 6-7. We take turns hosting — last month was my turn. We sometimes try to serve snacks or drinks that connect with a theme in the book (we had cosmos for The Gunkle!), but it’s very loose and no pressure.

We absolutely do talk about the book! Someone always brings a list of questions about the book to spark conversation. But we also catch up on other topics too.

We had a big of a serious theme going for a while. “Huckleberry Finn,” before reading “James,” then “Song Yet Sung,” and “Madness” (the history of a notorious mental hospital for Black patients, which happens to be right in my neighborhood). Since then, we’ve shifted a bit: The Reading List, God of the Woods, and The Gunkle. It’s good to switch things up and do something a bit lighter when we’ve been in heavy material. Next month is Frozen River, and after that, Orbital (my suggestion).

The time flies by in our group too. We usually chit chat and eat first, and then after maybe a half hour we settle in to talk about the book. We’re pretty disciplined about the structure without being rigid. It’s a good balance.

I’m really grateful they started inviting me! It’s funny that gradually we seem to be adding more women from our Pilates community, but it also feels like it’s growing very slowly and naturally.

I love the idea of your book club, Angie! I’ve never been in one…they are very competitive around here. You have to be INVITED and APPROVED by the members. As an introvert, it’s too stressful for me to attempt to join one and risk rejection. Good thing reading is a solitary activity

I have one friend who has a really interesting club -- they meet 6 times a. year, every two months. And they read TWO books -- one fiction and one nonfiction (usually) -- books that that "host" thinks speak to one another in interesting ways. And then they talk about those. I would probably enjoy this club. But they meet in Vancouver and it is a little tricky for me to commit to the trip. Their club includes men and women and people in different types of work (or retirement).

What a great format. Takes away all of the angst and pressure to finish a certain book by a certain date, which has been a big downside of the traditional book group.
These days, with so much content out there, it's a great way to share and get a lot of ideas.

Interesting concept for a book club!

I've been in a book club for about 25 years. It meets once a month on a Sunday evening (usually the 3rd Sunday of the month) and the host rotates. We used to meet in person and the host would provide dessert/coffee/tea. Since Covid we mostly do it remote now. We talk about the book (the host chooses the book but there is no theme or rules) for about an hour. We mostly stay focused on the book and there's not much off-topic chit-chat. We used to do that chit-chatting after the book discussion while everyone had dessert and coffee but now that we meet virtually that doesn't happen anymore, which is a little disappointing. But meeting online is much easier for everyone, especially people with small children or who live farther away and have a longer drive.

LJP, we all read and watch different things, and share what we think of them. It leads to excellent discussions, and about life in general.

For example, two people chatted about 5 books they were reading, and what they enjoyed about them. One person shared podcasts she was listening to. Others talked about documentaries and tv shows. I shared going to my client's book launch last week, and a few thought provoke articles the time before.

I love this format! I'm sure it helps that we see each other frequently because we live in the same building. There is great familiarity.

That’s a really interesting format . But to clarify - you all watch /read/listen to the same thing ahead of time ….as you would in a “ regular” book club ? I’ve been in one and didn’t love it . The book discussion actually rarely happened and the women just caught up with each other’s lives . I was the only new member and only knew one other woman so it wasn’t particularly gratifying .

Our book club is AWESOME! Best book club I've been part of. A diverse group of 8 people. It’s made up of the women in our small industrial building - no one else. Very easy commute!

We take turns to host. We meet monthly for 2 to 3 hrs.

There is no prescribed book! I LOVE THAT. You can read what you like and discuss it. Or, you can discuss a podcast, movie, tv show, and article. Anything that is compelling to you about any topic, will be compelling to the others. The hours fly by. It’s fascinating, and the conversation is excellent. Vibrant, passionate, intelligent, witty, and emotional.

I highly recommend this type pf book club structure if your book club needs a refresh ;)
