I love the alterations, they were well worth the cost!!

You crack me up when you say "do you know how many ill-fitted dresses I can buy for $210?". Quality over quantity is a hard lesson and one that I'm still learning also. The clothes you buy can last many years so it's worth spending a little more. In the end it could actually SAVE you money, not to mention give you the boost of more confidence and style. Plus imagine how much easier it will be to get dressed in the morning if you have a small but well organized wardrobe.

You were wise to spend this money, you'll get more use out of these items. The shorter length is very flattering and modern!!

Thanks everyone for all your wonderful comments!! I did like the improvements, but was still cringing from the cost, but with all your incredible feedback, I've learned the value of going from passable to "wow" , as Alecia just said!

I am inspired and empowered with my new-found discovery of the right fit!!

Such a difference! Well worth the money. I used to be like you in that I had lots of really great hand-me-downs from my friends and mother-in-law. Unfortunately, they weren't wonderful on me because the fit wasn't right for me. My outfits might have been made up of clothes that had beautiful, expensive fabrics and nice cuts but I looked frumpy. I didn't see it because I was seduced by the fact that they were such a good deal. My confidence and style quotient have increased exponentially since I figured out the value of good fit.

I hope I don't offend, but I see a similar transition in your outfits. The pre-alteration outfits were passable but not wow. Something about them seemed just a little off. Post alteration they are wonderful (especially the polka dot skirt and the patterned skirt), so much more flattering, and look much more current.

Free and cheap can have a price. If you're getting things that don't work for you, your style quotient pays for it. The nice thing though is once you've figured out the fit secret, you can train your eye so that you can go back and find those thrifty finds that really do look like a million bucks.

Wonderful difference! Brenda, you look so much younger with skirts and hair shorter. And we can see your lovely legs!
When knowing that you will need something from the thrift store shortened or whatever, remember that the alteration price will probably more than double if a lining is involved. You are on your way to a new mindset and fabulous wardrobe.
From experience, try packing away much of your non-altered wardrobe and anything that doesn't feel fabulous for a month or so and see how you feel working with a small streamlined closet.

OK, great lengths! As promised, some styling ideas:
For that first floral skirt--how about a black t-shirt, belted with a wide black belt, and some strappy black sandals, minimal jewelry. Let the skirt stand on its own!
For the purple dress, wear the denim jacket, and some tan strappy wedge sandals, maybe with a gladiator style. Bold silver jewelry to balance out the sweetness of the dress. The white sandals pull the dress back into the 90s and are a little too matchy-matchy in my book.
With the polka-dot dress, black patent stilettos (or kitten heels) or stiletto ankle boots and multi-strand pearls. Perhaps a brooch.
Have fun!

So glad you've gotten all this positive feedback, Brenda!
Just wanted to offer another perspective on the cost of the alterations. Your shopping strategy and mine are polar opposites (I've never set foot in a second-hand store in my life), so bear that in mind when I say that you've found yourself a very reasonably priced seamstress. I know $210 sounds like a lot up front, particularly when you're accustomed to scoring incredible bargains, but the alteration cost averages out to about $21 per item. Considering the sometimes radical changes she's making to the outfits, that really is an excellent price, especially when you factor in the customer service you're receiving from her. Add in the sharp uptick in complements you're receiving and the subsequent boost in confidence you'll probably experience, and it's practically a steal!! In the end, you get what you pay for.
Glad your alteration experience was so positive on the whole, and glad to know it's made such a difference. I also applaud your self-awareness in acknowledging that your current shopping approach may not make sense. I'm convinced you'll come to appreciate the quality over quantity argument in time!

I think the white shoes with the polka-dot dress are cute. With the blue dress I think you should go for a platform wedge or something a little "rustic" to anchor the floaty dress, maybe a cowboy boot! (-: I also could see a belt over that polka dot dress...maybe a red or yellow one in patent? What do you think?

BTW, LOVE the patterned skirt. Such a fun pattern. I'm with AJ on that one I'm thinking you threw on the neutrals just for the shot, since in your before you have it paired with a colored cami. This skirt with some colorful flats, a cami and a denim or leather jacket...fun!

Oh wow! Major improvements!

If you don't mind me adding some styling options....

The first bold skirt I think needs to stay in a casual vibe. I don't see it with a button down and heels. Just a simple neutral top and summer sandals or flats.

I know this might just be me but white footwear just seems so jarring. I think the blue dress would be pretty with nude or tan sandals or heels.

Oh the black polka dot dress is pretty. Add red belt and red heels.
