Jackie, I love your style! I kind of wish I dressed like you sometimes but I never am successful in pulling off as much slouch in my clothes as you are. It probably has to do with the way clothes are sized....if I go up a size, I am swimming and the clothes are falling off of me most of the time. In any case, if you don't like the word MODERN, My daughter gave me the word FRESH for my style descriptors which you can find in my profile. I think that word possibly encompasses both edgy and modern, and for me it implies all the energy that goes with my working with youth and being athletic.

What a great casual style you have! I like your descriptors, and I especially agree with "modern without being in-your-face trendy." I think it comes across that way because you expertly use neutrals, and sometimes a pop of color, to achieve that modern, trendy look. When you do accessorize, it is on the minimal, not maximal, side. The result is a very soft, chic, and current vibe to your outfits.

This is a great exercise and one that I need to re-visit for myself as I did it quite a while ago and I'm sure things have changed. I think that "kick in the butt" motivation is being passed along...

Jackie, you are amazing - you look so stylish, but there is such an effortlessness about the way you look which makes it all the more amazing. You look fantastic in the soft colors, the beiges, gray and wines, and you absolutely shine in the orange! I love adding the word 'modern' to your list; for all the ease and natural-ness of your style, you also look 100% on point trend-wise. Awesome!!

Kristin SF, Tania - thanks!

K.M. - I really like your observation about pieces being "origami" paired with fluid or skinny. That's a good visual - I like that - thanks!!

Angie - yes, definitely adding "Modern" to the list. Even "casual chic." I suppose that really does define what I'm trying to get at. As much work and thought it takes to go through these reflections (for me, anyways), it does feel very beneficial and I think will feel even more so year to year. Thanks for the push, and the fab forum where we can be motivated by each other :)

lisap - trust me, I'm the last one to write up any sort of reflection or musing. It's really not my thing. I tend to keep things in my head or at least to myself. It is nice to have a good buildup of photos to parse through and see themes, and big hits as well as BIG losers. I can already see what's going in the toss pile by taking a look at all the outfits as a whole. I can already see shifts in my shopping, and am looking to refine things as I go along. Couldn't do it without the fab support, advice, and inspiration here.

rachylou - I suppose you could say my outfits are more relaxed. Could also be that I'm feeling more relaxed in what I'm wearing. Higher happiness factor = more relaxed me... ;)

Suz - thanks for chiming in, and thanks for the push to get me writing things down. I've said it before but you are so inspirational. Good points on "soft, easy, and comfortable." I'm happy you think my palette is somewhat cohesive. I do think it could use a bit of refinement, so I hope to work on that this year.

shevia - thanks for the shorts love. I have to take good care of those because I don't know what I'd do without them!!!

AM - great points to ponder! Your comment about the footwear is interesting. In the past I've always defaulted to columns of colour and tone on tone footwear. This year has been more of a branching out for me to throw in contrasts like hits of cognac, or white booties with black bottoms. I'm learning to change it up, but it's also a good reminder to go back to basics sometimes too. And, yes, it's great to share info and get good ideas from other forum members with similar palettes and/or body types, isn't it!

I'm loving all the reflection going on here. You and others!
Looks like some of us are craving a more deliberate and well-articulated style.

First, this is a wonderful collection of outfits. I hope you feel as great as you look in them.

Second, some thoughts.

My fav's: 1,4, 6, 9, 13 (love), 14.

Chic, modern, minimalist: Your style is identifable.

Shoes as statement is coming through

If you are seeking more "edge" perhaps consider shoes/boots (as you are currently doing), more tone on tone, more monochromatic, column of color -(I think that is what Angie calls it), asymmetric lines...can you come up with other technique that will help you explore this edge?

Great goals! -- which I would argue are the most important part of this exercise as they are a deep understanding and synthesis of the current state of affairs but with very intentional next steps.

Third, a big thanks!
I benefit from your hard work in that I have a similar color palette and have the need for those easy and relaxed outfits that have the subtleties of rich style.

These are all really terrific outfits. I will pick on the shorts in 13 as a particularly outstanding example of Jackie style because you wear them so well - dare I say effortlessly - and they just wouldn't work on lots of people.

Well, what a treat! A whole group of Jackie pics! You are stunning in every one of these. I would add modern and minimal as well. And I think maybe "soft" and "easy" or "comfortable" seem to get at the same attributes in your outfits. Or maybe "easy" and "comfortable" get at the same thing as "casual."

I find it tough to pick favourites here -- you have some stellar pieces and combine them with such ...easy elegance! :)

I actually think your colour palette is cohesive. You favour neutrals in cooler tones, blue, plums, and the occasional hit of coral or orange (and wow, does it love you!) It looks to me as if everything here could (in theory) go with almost everything else, allowing for seasonal differences, of course.

Putting some effort into spring/ fall outerwear makes a ton of sense to me, given your climate. And that grey coat is a great cut for you. Totally hear you re boatnecks. That is my thing, too!

I'm really admiring your ability to pull these thoughts together, along with the pictures, and then formulating some valuable conclusions about how you dress and what looks best on you. Like Suz, your look is very identifiable and very consistent - which is the work of a well-thought-out closet and careful shopping. I cannot quite imagine having the wherewithal to pull together a project like this but perhaps will have enough of a photo log one day that will help me do so. Kudos to you !

Oooh. You are killer Casual Chic, Jackie. Must add Modern to your list of style descriptors. Absolutely.

jackiec, I'm not sure if I can be of help because I'm still figuring it all out, but I have to say that you look so put-together, chic, and stylish to me. There's definitely a signature vibe to my eyes--I think it's the way you play with volume, with sort of "origami" pieces combined with fluid or skinny ones. I like the color palette too. And it's all so flattering on your figure. I must say that you got me excited about skinnies again after seeing the variety of looks you create with them.

Also--agree on learning from the unloved outfits. I've been doing a lot of it lately!

Hah! Looks like mine wasn't the only butt Suz kicked today! Well done Suz! :D

Jackie, this is a great collection of outfits. I can see edgy in a lot of your summer looks - that's a great pair of shorts! How hard is it to make that translate to winter style when all we want to do is wrap up warm.

But there's a very contemporary twist to your year round styling. It all feels very now without being in-your-face trendy. Nicely done!

I like all of your descriptors. I think they describe your style very well. I might add modern and minimal (as opposed to maximal) too. I'm not very analytical when it comes to fashion but I can say that I love your style. You ooze easy elegance!

Suz' post today, "Evolving My Style: Part 1"http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....yle-part-1
gave me the exact kick-in-the-butt motivation to get my style goals and musings down in print. I'm home recovering from a bad bug, with one dog at the groomers, one dog napping, and (finally!) both boys at school.

Last month I made the effort to take outfit photos (almost) every day. I've compiled them and reviewed them for themes, holes, positives and negatives. I also reviewed my 2014 photos for the same. I pulled my favourite outfits, and then beside each wrote style descriptors. Interestingly, I could also very easily pull my least favourite outfits, and do the same with those. Just as much info (and more) to be gleaned from the losers. Unfortunately I am so non-tech savvy that I can't seem to post my collages in a decent way. So I've tried to pick and choose my favourites, below.

Photos 1-8 are my favourites from January. Photos 9-22 are some of my 2014 favourites, although I'm pretty sure I've missed a lot. Off the top of my head I can see I haven't posted any outfits with my combat boots, which were workhorses last year.

Style descriptors:
As much as I've followed and studied everyone else's style descriptors, I have never put pen to paper to try to figure mine out. Seems like too much work. However, when I described each outfit the following came to mind:

soft
comfortable
casual
polished
easy
neutral

Am I missing anything? I'd like to add edgy, or even something to do with on trend, or modern with a certain je ne sais quoi, but I just don't know how to put that in words, or if it even fits. Or maybe it can be a goal.

Reflections:

Palette
Most of my favourite outfits were picked from the summer. In the summer I feel best in whites, oatmeal, greys. When I do wear black, it is tempered by bare skin (arms, legs) or hits of white. Although #5 is graphic black and white, I've realized I don't shine in that colour combo - however - I love the assymetrical lines of this outfit. My favourite winter pieces seem to be charcoal, but I am deferring to my purples/wines more and more. I am finding black more and more difficult to wear. I rarely wear patterns although I've dabbled with plaids over the past few months.

Silhouette
Furthermore, most of my favourite outfits had lots of slouch. This worries me now that more tailored looks are coming up this season...My favourite winter silhouettes are slouchy or semi-tucked pullovers. Although I really like how I look and feel in simple dresses, especially in the summer, my real-life looks almost always default to denim of some sort. I tend to wear slouchy denim in the fall/spring, and skinnier silhouettes in the deep winter. Necklines - wow I didn't realize how well boatnecks work for me. I am purging all tshirts with scoop necks this year. I can't believe how poorly they work for me.

Outwear - I am not good with jackets. I have discovered that my 2 year old grey wool coat has been a workhorse this winter, despite rarely being worn last year (photo 23). Although I purchased a bright orange hooded coat, I seem to default to the grey one more and more. My long neck loves the stand up collar and I like the structure it adds to outfits. One thing I notice about my spring/summer/fall outfits is that I lack standouts for outerwear. I have light jackets but nothing that sings to me. Therefore, I again default to pullovers or cardigans/scarves. Maybe another goal is spring/summer outwear in a similar silhouette to my winter coat?...

Footwear:
Very clearly, in reviewing all my outfits, I can see that footwear plays a big role. I love my shoes/sandals to do the talking. Most outfits are very simple, but my shoes might have some shine (silver Trinas), platform (BCHardtoTell), or colour (hits of cognac). I like my footwear to have a bit of edge. I hope this shows.

Goals:
*Be pickier about colours. Try to make them cohesive.
*Put some effort into spring/summer/fall outerwear
*Add more "edge" to outfits
*Wear more of what I love - even if it means repeating. Get rid of the rest. So far this is going well.

If you've made it this far. Thanks for reading. I realize this is more of a "reflections" post. Baby steps for me. Although I'm an analytical person, I rarely get the chance to focus that on my wardrobe. If you have any thing to add that might help me with style descriptors, or how to take my outfits to another level please comment.
