I adore boho too but so much of it is earthy colors that do absolutely nothing for me. I'm trying to be much more selective.

I’m boho lover but have sort of lost touch with it for some reason. I like the Jean jacket in 5 :-). I love the tulip sleeves.

I can see that the boho items that work have more saturated colour and zip.

Interesting observation about not liking solids unless they’re deliberately matched. I might have a similar issue but never put my finger on it.

Your style, what I've seen of it thus far, is really interesting and quite the breath of fresh air ! I agree there's a very fine line between boho and the Marrimeko/artist -influenced looks . I started dipping my toes into the resale /thrift market this past year, and have to acknowledge that it's NOT going well . I'm buying from someone who does the "curating", cleaning, pressing, repairing etc ahead of time, then posts the items on Instagram. Most of what I've bought seemed like a good idea at the time, but in reality the items aren't me, nor do they looks good in reality as they do in a photo.

Anyways, this is a thread about you, not me Interesting reading, thanks for sharing !

I can relate to being drawn to boho items because I like looking at prints and find them attractive. However, a little goes a long way for me, and I have learned to be very selective. I will do boho-lite, and that basically means I will wear an item in a boho print — say, a patterned blouse — but pair it with simple dark wash jeans (not distressed and torn ones) and I’ll keep the footwear refined (as much as I miss wearing my old cowboy boots, they would take the boho top back into that territory a little too quick). Wearing it with a tailored jacket instead of a drapey bomber would help too. And of course I agree that restricting your color palette will help!

I do like adding a little boho to my style to switch and loosen things up a bit. But buying anything too voluminous or too tricky on the boho side is sure to result in a closet orphan. I remember to keep it simple.

I’m in my 50s and still make mistakes with uncomfortable shoes, although I’ve not bought high heels in years. I can convince myself that a shoe will be perfectly comfortable for all-day wear and then be bitterly disappointed after a day results in blisters and sore feet.

Your statement about wasting money at thrift stores for "good deals" really resonated with me. I've often bought things at thrift/consignment stores that were a good price to begin with and then an additional percentage off because they had languished in the store too long. And most just did not work for me. Then also buying something at thrift/consignment just because it was a certain label (again... "what a great deal for a [fill in label name here]!!" Oh don't I wish I had all that money back! Then I could buy just a handful of quality items that really work for me. Live and learn and I am getting better at this.

I think the color palette of your boho items is joyful and warm. I have tried boho a few times but the busy detail, loose fits, tiers, and ruffles do not suit my frame or personality. I may use some boho accessories since I wear multiple thin bangles and on occasion espadrille sandals. When I want something loose and flowing, I grab a sleek fitting duster or midi length cardigan, but keep it unbuttoned so it can flow behind me as I walk.

I have made numerous personal fashion mistakes, but the most prominent has been lack of discernment. My wardrobe used to be statement heavy, full of wildcard items, and did not complement my personality. Creating a cohesive personal style and wardrobe requires thought about multiple factors. It took a long time for me to realize the importance of function, fit, emotion, proportion, color, pattern and personality.

Yes I have a very hard time with being attracted to boho and then not wearing it too. Boho is absolutely perfect for my climate BUT it does not suit my personal style. These are my current boho(ish) items that work for me because they are just dressy enough. The strange thing is, when I get it right, the piece becomes a workhorse. That has been the case particularly with my embroidered denim jacket, leopard maxi skirt and the two shirts.

I do the same strategy with strictly "my colors" and do "my prints" ( ikat, geometrical, stripes mixed with florals, etc. ) and try to avoid the pure floral ones ( a bit too sweet for me ). Since my current work is more dressy than the previous one - I have less temptation to get playful, colorful pieces .
Your collection is beautiful!

In my teens and early 20s, I was way into the Goth look. I still appreciate the occasional dark, edgy look, especially in formal wear (like Dita Von Teese), but not so much that I look like Herman Munster's illegitimate child.

I have combined you mistakes and over-thrifted items that don't work on me trying to make them work. Not sure if I was the one to suggest keeping a small collection of x items to turn to when the urge strikes to Helena, but that is a strategy I use to stop myself from looking for more. Your boho for you collection is beautiful!

These are beautiful; I can see why they tempt you! My only suggestion was given to me by another forum member and I can't recall who! But they encouraged me to keep a small collection of pieces of these type of items so I could shop my closet when the urge strikes rather than actually shopping!

My style mistakes were mostly thinking wearing things that didnt flatter my shape would be fine, like unbelted tunics. Things that are baggy with no shape makes me look massive and wide and yeah last summer I wore a tunic with leggings and its just a no i n Japan. Leggings are underwear.

My struggle with boho comes down to the light weight cotton blouses which are perfect for summer but also make me look like a refugee from a summer music festival... esp because it resurrects the high schooler in me and I will inevitably decide cowboy boots with no socks would ‘go perfect!’ Lol. Not even a string of bunting away from embarrassing! Sigh. But it’s a cool look, right? Not me, but forever cool!

I can relate to a lot of this, Gillian Pearl. Especially the footwear :(

I too am very attracted to the pretty, flowing, breezy, romantic, colourful, and elegant aspects of boho - (and I love patterns) - but have to be VERY careful that the items feel right in the long run. Your boho items are beautiful and very vibrant! #5 is my fave.

You did a good job filtering with colours straight off the bat. Stick to that! I do that too. Although my wardrobe is colour-rich, there is a lot of colour discipline, and colours have to match. I'm fussy and strict about that.

As for patterns, I've learned that I get bored of patterns that aren't my classics. So I stick to stripes, dots, checks, plaids, and some florals - and within my colour palettes.

Angie’s post this morning inspired reflection about my style mistakes. By mistakes I mean bad decisions for me, not that the style itself is bad or wrong. To recap my thoughts from the comments there:

Going too boho is my main style mistake.

It’s so close to what I really love that I am continuously tempted! When you adore colorful patterned and retro clothing it’s easy to find in boho style. But the patterns are often not actually to my liking, and the colors are often earth and jewel tones, so inevitably I get tired of these pieces very quickly. I can wear some very boho items if they are exactly in my colors (bright and pastel, with jewel tones allowed if they’re mixed with those) or cut (not too fussy and overwhelming) and have the perfect print, but I am learning that those items are few and far between.

My other personal style mistakes include:

Wearing colors that look good on me but that I don’t feel good in, mainly earth tones and neutrals

Buying solid color items when I prefer a print, unless it is a solid that is specifically meant to coordinate with other print items

Painful heels! But it was my 20s so I’ll chalk that up to fun at the time

Thrifting anything cute and not being discerning. I can’t tell you how much money I’ve wasted over the years on “good deals”

Thankfully I learned my lesson on painful heels as I moved into my 30s. The pandemic had me thrifting less in actual thrift stores, so I’ve had a year to revise my thrifting habits. I only fully admitted to myself that I won’t wear solids and earth tones in the past few months. So overall, those mistakes have been sorted out, all except the boho temptation!

When I shop I am constantly tempted by boho items that I know I wouldn’t often wear. It actually really drags out my shopping process because I feel drawn to every boho item and have to take a look to see if it’s within my parameters. This is much more time consuming than other “wrong for me” styles that I can just avoid altogether. And I can’t tell you how many times I have convinced myself that an item is within my parameters, only for it to go unworn and end up in the donate/resell pile. I realized while online shopping yesterday that I’ve got to develop better personal judgment filters for boho or it’ll keep sidetracking me. So far, immediately rejecting anything in the wrong colors has sped up my process a bit.

Photos1-7 are my boho items that actually work. I see embroidery, bright and pastel colors, floral/nature patterns, interesting sleeves, and fairly streamlined silhouettes. I also see a vintage/retro appeal. I should make notes on what works about what I have and check the notes when shopping! 8 & 9 are examples that didn’t work. Yes, I gravitate toward too much boho in home decor too haha. The duvet cover was gorgeous but not bright or boldly printed enough for me. I sold it and bought a Marimekko one instead. The coat is super fun, but it is not my colors, and to be honest I hate paisley. I impulse bought it because you rarely find print coats. Never worn by me and resold. Photo 10 is my wedding dress, proof that I really do love boho style but it’s got to be just right.

Does anyone have any advice or shared commiseration on repeating style mistakes that keep tempting you?
