Applause for Emily!

That is one of the most practical style manifestos I've ever read! Must be so freeing (and I'm envious, because I'm still clinging to the edge of packratism, afraid to let go and drop, lest I realize I can't fly)!

Like Jayne, I pledge to support you on your path to flying free, and to remind you of this manifesto should things ever get rough --- though fingers crossed they can't, not with someone so level-headed as you clearly are! I promise too to point out possibilities for greater levels of brightness until you cry uncle Seriously, though, some 'boring basics' are very handy to have --- but I'm sure you won't be one to throw the baby out with the bathwater!

Great job summarizing! I am 'bag lazy' as well. Only small evening bags for a night out seem to happen, then I'm right back to my seasonal bag too. Actually, I'm in line with you on most of these. Good luck as you move forward!

Wow, I am IMPRESSED. You have accomplished a huge amount. I feel like people generally move through this phase, while I seem to be stuck in it perpetually. Great job and look forward to seeing you implement your action plan!

I love a good manifesto; congrats on literally and mentally getting rid of what was getting in the way of achieving your style goals!

BTW, you are not alone in your struggle to get your casual wear sorted, sigh. Will be keeping an eye on what you come up with in case I can steal any ideas.

I use to be like that with bags too! Now I have a 3 gorgeous bags I have in rotation. The thing I found helpful was to group things in your bag together, like have a makeup purse with everything you need in it, one wallet (I always remove unnecessary cards and paper out of it) and sunglasses. I put the little things in each bag (usually the zipper) like tissues, tea sweeteners and toothpicks.

Woohooo! You just will feel so much better after those bags are dropped off. I have been through this over last few months and it's a liberating exercise for sure. I admire your thought process in discovering what will work for you (the changing up bag thing - you don't have to do that - there are no rules!!) and what you want.
Love that you shared your style goals with us.

Isn't that closet purge just the most liberating act? And now you are ready to move forward without any of the things that make you feel unfab holding you back. I think your discoveries are going to be so very helpful and your plan for evolving brilliant - I know I found it to be such a relief to find my "jumping off" point! Good work Emily!

WHOOT!! Emily, this is fabulous. You are SO much closer to looking as great as you want, having purged that closet and written this! I had a set of bags just like that last fall. It feels so good to clear out the old to make room for the new. And knowing yourself is the best way to go forward.

That is a manifesto that rings true for me also. I pledge to support you, and point out that that is another boring basic, go bold! and ask about where the new season bag is....and drool over you in heels we others can only dream of

good luck

It has now been a few weeks after purging a whole pile of things out of my closet (proof: the picture below is the back of my car full of things that I donated after my major cleanout) I've been spending an obscene amount of time flipping through blog entries and other people's WIWs and have found both the literal and figurative space to think about how I put myself together.

Here is what I've discovered, for posterity and to keep me honest:
My style is boring by default.
I love shoes and always have. I can deal with heel height, but not blister-causing straps.
I love bags in theory, but I am simply too lazy to change handbags often.
I repeated outfits from my overstuffed closet; now I don't have to sort through a bunch of things I don't like first.
I wear jeans four times a week at most, so I did not need ten pairs. The five I have now, including new trouser jeans from my shopping list, is still too many.
How successful* I am at dressing is related to the formality of the occasion: I love getting dressed up for weddings and evenings out and I feel pretty good in my business casual work attire, but my casual wear needs work.

Here is how I plan to improve and evolve:
I will look for pieces that are more interesting when basics are due for replacement; I will shop carefully from a list and be willing to spend a little more on better quality things.
I will wear brights, even though frankly they scare me, but maybe just on my nails to start as per Angie's spring trends suggestion.
I will accept my bag-laziness and be a seasonal bag switcher.
I will accept my shoe-covetousness**, wear heels more often because I love them, and look for fun footwear that does not give me blisters.
I will continue to edit out things that don't make me feel like my best self.

I feel very lucky to have a resource as encouraging and inspiring as the YLF blog and forum. Thank you Angie for building and sharing such a wonderful online community.

  * I am defining success as ending up in an outfit I feel stylish in.
** This is a word! I am as surprised as anyone.
