Thank you, Deb & Amy!
Unfrumped, I've had to hem midis to knee length to get a decent length.
Lyn*, I consider you one of my style icons on YLF. I like pencils/dresses/a-lines/PBs too, just not statement necklaces & pattern mixing (though they look great on you). You've made me want to try pumps & ballet flats someday.

Although our colours are different, I feel in some ways we have style similarities - probably because we both love A-line skirts :3 As for honing in your style, I think you've already made some good observations about what you like - your set of colours, not too many pieces in your outfits, and liking skirts.

I agree with the "Autumn Downton Abbey" descriptor - that's actually what I was thinking. I can see a lot of elements of Mary; maybe the thicker fabrics, and the richer colours? And you have such pretty curly hair! *jealous*

You have a lively cohesive style. Great outfits! I like your plaid pencil skirt because I'm trying one in this slightly longer length as that seems to be more modern than my shorter ones. I'm going it try a boxy or fluid top. I like the length of your other skirts too-/ it is SO hard to find skirts that are not too short, and dresses, too.

Alassë, thanks so much for posting this!

I'm an actual newbie, somehow found forum and jumped right in before finding Angie's blog and so many helpful tips.

Have been thinking about posting pictures of where I am style-wise, but my wardrobe ambitions are extremely narrow, compared to most people here.

I was just googling and, you know, "A Room with a View" may be a better term to google on in terms of a pictorial explanation. Part of it for me is your hair (so pretty!), the shorter fitted jackets, and the embellishments on your tops. The Edwardian era was a transition from the Victorian to the WWI era, when skirts came off the floor (saving cloth for the war effort). Women still had long hair and embellishments, but things were curtailed because of the war... so the introduction of "clean lines." And even before then, skirts had already narrowed from the big wide things people wore; skirts fell naturally, without all that engineering to hold them up and out. An English era and very feminine.

'50s retro, we're well into clean, masculine, and architectural IMO. Skirts also got big and foofy again and involved crinolines. Of course the pencil was going strong, but even so, the '50s were really marked by the big skirt. It was really supremely an American decade - everything boxier, graphic, etc. If you ask me, the '50s even had lace tamed, hehe.

I think you're style is definitely more feminine than that, and while minimalist... it's more in the number of pieces than being un-ornamented.

Ceit - Thank you.

Rachylou - Thank you as well. Could you elaborate on the difference between "Edwardian-sliding-toward-modernity" vs. "50s retro"? I haven't seen Downton Abbey, and at one point I thought I aspired to 50s retro. I always enjoy reading your insightful comments.

Definitely lovely to see you :)

My first thought was "Autumn Downton Abbey." Which I suppose is the same thing... but I see a touch of the Edwardian-sliding-toward-modernity in your style. As opposed to, for example, 50s retro.

Also, when your skirts hit right at the knee ("mid knee") that struck me as really flattering.

Una - You should have seen my closet before I applied a color palette! I've known I was an autumn for 8 years now, but I didn't get serious about purging non-autumn colors till 2 or 3 years ago. Learning about hemlines & proper fit did a lot to update my style from frumpy to elegant feminine, as did adding accessories like hairdos/belts.

Actually, why don't I add some pics so you can see where I started. They're pretty bad. ;) Taken Jan-May 2011.
#1 My ultra-frumpy/don't care combo
#2 Bad color top; 1st time I wore something fitted (I liked it)
#3 Low contrast (I prefer high), bad color, hemline way too long
#4 Top too short for pants, top untailored
#5 Top untailored, hemline too long; 1st attempt at an autumn combo (became a favorite)

I'm just tweaking since I don't see any major style shifts on the horizon - rather, I'm completing the huge overhaul I started a few years ago. Some wardrobe holes remain, as well as cherished wishlist items, but overall I'm happy with my work in progress.

Amy - this is the result of multiple years of doing & redoing Angie's style exercises, PPP buying, mapping where I want my wardrobe to go, and practicing hairstyles. Thinking about style is definitely a hobby for me. Yes, I consider my hair to be my most important accessory.

Shemarie - I'm new to membership, not to YLF; I consider my journey to have started several years ago. I just audited the course without signing up for a grade. Take a look at my real newbie pictures!

Thank you for the feedback, Suz, Beth Ann, & CocoLion! It's taken me 4 years to reach my current level. I'm pretty happy with my style; I just thought I'd see if the collective wisdom of YLF had any suggestions for me.

I'm fairly classic in terms of style longevity, so I expect to make small changes each year but continue to remix the main core of my wardrobe. Where do I see myself going? I'd like to explore day dresses, try more autumn shades (especially a blue), and continue to add retro/princess touches. Every so often I encounter a fit/proportion issue that I might request help with; in fact, I want to post on a jeans fit issue.

Hello Fabbers!

With my new photo-posting ability, I thought an introductory style post was in order. A bit about me....

I am pretty convinced that I'm a Warm Autumn (12 season palette).

I can be in skirts 7 days/week or trousers up to 2 days/week (more often doesn't feel "me"). I introduced pencil skirts a couple years ago, and they have quickly become my #2 staple (a-lines #1). However, I cannot wear pencils all week or I feel I am missing something from my style rubric.

My minimalist bent means I prefer to match toppers & bottoms. I do not wear 3 different blocks of color in an outfit (top, topper, bottom) unless 2 of the 3 are neutrals; the outfit feels too chaotic otherwise.

Here are fall/winter outfits that represent my Modern Princess or Feminine-Elegant-Autumn-Retro-Simple moniker (from Angie's 5 words to describe your aspirational style exercise). (Please excuse the at-home slippers.) If you see a different style, I'd like to hear your perspective. Any ideas on how to hone my style? All feedback welcome.
