Thanks, everyone! This type of exercise is really fun for me. (I realize analysis isn't everyone's cup of tea). And I'll say this, too: While I'm really good at pondering and analyzing and writing things down...I sometimes drop the ball when it comes to execution! So, you'll all have to watch me this year and make sure I actually walk the walk and not just talk the talk.

Suz, Urban Prince! I love your style goals, and I can't wait to see your suit (when you find it). As for a blue jacket/blazer, check this one out:

http://www1.bloomingdales.com/.....-n-_-n-_-n

ManidipaM, your goals seem perfect for where you are in your life right now. And I especially identify with "wear what's in the closet already."

Caro, I LOVE that quote. In fact, I copied it down when you first posted it the other week. :)

Deborah and Diane, feel free to crib from my list. It took a little bit of time and thought, but mostly I built my list off of the one I wrote last year. So, once you have one written you can just tweak it from time to time.

Cheryl, having fun with fashion IS the goal, according to Angie. So you're good to go!

Claire, it DOES help to actually put the words down on paper (or on the computer). Having to articulate exactly what you're aiming for really helps you focus...or at least it helps me!

Moira, isn't it crummy that we don't get to enjoy spring in the mid-Atlantic? I would love to buy that ink blue jacket I posted for Suz, but it would have a very short wearing life. :(

Niefern, there have been several discussions about Euro Chic here on YLF. I'll try to find some and add the links here.

jayne and sarah, good luck with your lists!

No more spring jackets for the Mid Atlantic!
YES! As much as I love them, they really have limited use.
I have two identical linen jackets, cropped with a slight peplum and three quarter length sleeves, one in brown and one in salmon. They are adorable. I think I wore each of them twice last spring/summer.

This is so inspiring Nancylee! I really need to get all of the goals floating around in my head down on paper. I love your list and it makes total sense to me. You are refining your goals steadily and your list for spring seems spot on. Now hold fast and don't be tempted by all of the impractical spring jackets!

Nancy this is so specific and well thought out. Based on what I see of your outfits I would say this is all appropriate and on track. Did it take long to develop this? I so struggle with this sort of thing. I'm thinking I may need to "acquire" your rubric, or at least ask permission to share it:)

Oh this is a great piece of work. When I get a minute I am going to have to do this myself. But shopping less, buying better quality, and wearing all I own are 3 goals I have set for myself lastyear that I want to continue...but for 2013, the new needs some consideration...

Love how you have articulated your goals nancylee.

I wrote this on my style goals post:

This quote really resonated with me.

“Style is the perfection of a point of view.” Richard Eberhart

It made me realise that this is what I have been trying to achieve this year. Style as a language, I want to be coherent & express who I am through my clothes.

I have other goals but this is the big one for me.

This is extremely comprehensive, Nancy! I'm full of admiration. I wish I'd thought things out quite as coherently and clearly before I made my 12 for 12 list!

But better late than never. You've inspired me to do this exercise *now*.

I'm not as far advanced as either you or Suz in my style journey, so my goals are necessarily fewer and more, um, basic. But I do share this one with you:

1. "To shop for pieces that are elements of love, not just practical wardrobe needs."

Though I also have to do the other part --->

2. Fill those practical holes; stop ignoring them as 'boring basics'! --- I'm really awful about this :-/ so it's a work in progress...

I'm also going to steal this one off Suz:

3. "Look for the drama in restraint." --- I'm often guilty of getting too caught up in the pattern and texture and hectic colour department... and ending up too ALGO to suit my personality. Especially since I neglect the 'boring' basic, plain pieces they could use as foil. I've done better with this last year, I think, and hope to continue this year.

Corollary to the two above:

4. Remember what's in the closet already! --- Focus on neutrals, false plains and 'more of the same' (colours already in closet) in the colour and pattern department, especially for basics and essentials. Will NOT branch off into new colour capsules this year; WILL build on/extend what I have instead.

5. Prune the impractical --- I'm not comfy if I'm not physically comfortable, no matter how 'nice' I look. I can't do precious, so must stop buying for precious non-lifestyle! And what I already have that I'm afraid to wear? Pass on or pull on for currently lived life!

6. Bring style home: Wear it out before I throw it out. --- Flip side of the last one. Must upgrade at-home wardrobe, since it is going to be an even larger part of life this year. But 'upgrade' not by buying cheap 'at-home' things, like in the past; wear the 'good stuff' and enjoy it on self, not hanger, instead.

7. Resist the cheap thrills! --- I have the bad habit of buying the best bargain, rather than the best fit for *me*. Still trying to lose that habit, though the early shop this year has largely countered this.

As for my wishlist, it's already partly made and mostly done, as you know. But I'll enjoy rooting for you ladies and peeping over your shoulder as you swell out for your spring/summer capsule, Nancy, and you try on your suits and jackets, Suz!

Nancy -- This is fantastic. You have clearly been doing some important thinking.

I will play along. This is tentative, because I'm just formulating these now, and I might want to come back and revise at some point!

My main goal is to live up to my title of Urban Prince!

That means I want to:

Focus on simple, clean-lined, and mostly polished outfits with impeccable fit. Look for the drama in restraint.

For this, details are all important, so I would like to buy the accessories that will bring it up to standard. For spring, I'll be searching for a pair of oxfords and another bag.

To look for my perfect suit.

To look for another high quality jacket, whether it be leather or some other fabrication, in ink or navy or one of my signature colours.

To take continue to take as many photos of my daily outfits as I can, with a view to determining my genuine needs for my various capsules: work-at-home, go-to-town, go-to-city, appearances, outdoor life and workout.

To continue to recycle those items that don't meet my standards or don't satisfy my current style goals.

Along with developing a style rubric for myself yesterday, I also updated my style goals to be more in line with where I am currently in my style journey. This is such a valuable exercise, and I'm so grateful for Angie for sharing her own goals with us as an example:

http://youlookfab.com/2012/02/.....yle-goals/

I did this for the first time one year ago, when Angie wrote this blog post. I'd been on YLF for one year at that point. Some of my goals have stayed the same or needed only a little tweaking, while others changed quite a bit.

My current style goals:

* To marry my favorite fashion personas--Modern Classic, Euro Chic, Arty/Edgy, Boho--into a cohesive age-appropriate and sophisticated style

* To dress with more intention, conscious of my new style rubric (Elegant Minimal Arty Neutral)

* To continue introducing more arty/edgy elements into my minimal elegant look (different silhouettes, textures, dramatic pieces)

* To continue incorporating a limited number of trendy elements into my look as long as they support my overall goals

* To continue to rid my wardrobe of elements that do not support my style goals

* To indulge my love for boho elements, but sparingly and with a more arty/modern flair

* To wear all the great clothes I already own and try new combinations

* To try some tucking and belting

* To strengthen my spring/summer wardrobe so it functions as seamlessly as my fall/winter wardrobe

* To make fewer--and more considered--purchases and employ the one-in, one-out rule

* To shop for pieces that are elements of love, not just practical wardrobe needs

* To NOT buy any more spring jackets since that season is short or nonexistent here in the mid-Atlantic, and it quickly becomes too hot to wear them

Spring/Summer wish list:

* dress to wear to late spring wedding
* cream/off-white shoulder bag
* drapey more modern-cut tee shirts
* sleeveless summer tops
* sundresses/sleeveless work dresses

What do you think? Have you ever tried this exercise?
