@Brooklyn we sound like we have similar measurements (also a 10" difference between waist & hips - I'm either a pear or hourglass). Muted colours are a good thing for me so long as they're also deep (not pastels). Maybe I'll sit out Veronika Maine for now then but maybe try out Mombasa Rose when I have a little extra money to burn (the end of the academic year is almost here - will have a little extra money to burn over the summer break, which should be a good time to test drive some casually floaty/ lightweight floral maxi skirts

I like how Birds Nest has clickable flat lay outfits for outfit inspiration - what a seamless use of technology for Fashion: https://www.birdsnest.com.au/womens-outfits

@Bijou Ah I see. So it feels like the fabric around the hole is also thinning? It sounds like the ramie fabric is more robust though, in your experience, right? That staycation blouse is still on my mind, so I might 'add to cart' & mull it over for a bit first - my wallet is going to be giving you both the side eye in a month lol!

Zaeobi, YES, I knew about the direct MTR line from Central to Shatin. The Shatin school location is temporary - new school is being built in the old Mid Levels location.

YES, to defining your waist. That's a figure flattering priority FOR YOU when you wear draped outfits. Good job fine tuning the details to make looks work your way

Zaeobi, my Ministry of Style items are now 2 years old. The most worn item is the skirt (worn at least 60 times over the last 2 years), but has developed a small hole. I will try to repair it, but it is getting close to being worn out. The shirts, especially the pink shirt has been worn a lot and is still good. I will buy this label again as I love the light ramie fabric that is not sheer and long sleeves to provide sun protection.

Zaeobi, I am pretty curvy on my lower half (10 inch difference between waist and hips) and the Mombasa Rose skirt fits me around the hips with room to spare. Waist is elastic so it’s forgiving. The only thing I’d say is that the actual colours are more muted than they appear on the website. Which may or may not be an attraction. I can understand not wanting to risk it. I hate “return for store credit” policies.

Veronika Maine fit is variable. I’ve had a lot of their things over the years. I’d hold out for a more A-line style. They regularly do them. This skirt (a couple of years old) is still one of my favourites. I wore it twice last week

Another Australian retailer you might consider is Birdsnest. They are an internet only retailer and carry lots of Australian brands. They have great customer service (they usually have actual measurements for their items). Good styling suggestions too.

The jersey skirt is definitely a cold to mild weather skirt, so that's why I hope the other turns up. It felt too hot at around 75 degrees, which is about 6 months of the year here.

Haha @FashIntern I'm the opposite - I'm trying to create a black capsule wardrobe (so it feels a bit more 'intentional', since I now have dark brown as my deep neutral of choice) but I can't quite seem to resist adding other colours in too I suppose that's a good thing here though, since all black has been heavily politicised as protestor garb out here...

Haha I've been to FL as a kid - I think 'pea soup' is an accurate descriptor for the consistency of the muggy air there

@suntiger You read my mind! The 'black' capsule wardrobe I'm creating has hints of red in it for that reason (& orange - of course I couldn't commit to just one colour lol)
They have the jersey skirt in tan, so here's hoping they hear your plea - otherwise we can be Terracotta Twins I don't have many light coloured bottoms in general though - both due to practicality & figure flattery (pear shape).

@Angie Thank you - draping is new to me, but I think it can work so long as I keep some structured waist definition! From HK island to Sha Tin is quite the distance - did you know they're now building a direct MTR line there from Central/ Admiralty? Think it's supposed to be completed by next year, but don't know how COVID has affected those plans...
Haha yes, K-Town is quite popular with the French crowd here so it has some cute little restaurants & cafes. Nice promenade too Sure - looking forward to my first YLF meetup

What gorgeous colors! I often think I should branch out, but when I start actually flirting with other shades, I always come back to my berries, blues, red, and green, and my secret loves, black and pink (I don’t publicly admit that I wear those, but they’re in my wardrobe all the time, lol). Otoh, keeping that range fairly small means I can use colors to tie my crazy things together. “Variety” to me tends to mean shape, and I love interesting textures.

Having just been back to Tampa, i don’t envy you having to deal with the heat and AC at all! Your thin, flowing layers sound like a brilliant strategy.

Zaeobi, YES to everything you wrote. You need blankets at the office, in restaurants, shops, and on the MTR! Loving you in draped looks - just commented on your outfit post.

Glenealy and Island School are both on HK island - still going strong. (Although Island School just moved to Shatin). In the Mid-Levels, which is where we lived. First on Conduit Road, and then on the Peak.

I know Kennedy Town! Cute newer place. And Kowloon I know well too. We will have to meet when I am next in HK

Yaaas re: burgundy that's towards purple as a neutral!!! But burgundy that's more red I like with black.
I'm hoping that weekend skirt shows up in tan, cause I'd like a light neutral skirt, but if not, I may get the terracotta.

Haha well I want dark brown to be my main neutral (a warm deep chocolate brown) but, as my list in this post shows, I'm still missing a few key pieces in this colour (like a long sleeved cotton top). It's been surprisingly hard to find!

But on the flipside, I'm someone who doesn't mind mixing all colours into one look with no neutrals - I wore a teal top with a yellow skirt just yesterday.

@Bijou Thank you - I think one of my key tenants for 'getting away' with wearing so many colours (I know most people prefer to stick to a particular colour palette when dressing) is to make sure they're all in a similar shade & tone (I usually stay away from pastels & neon, for example).
Ministry of Style looks lovely, thank you - especially your leopard print maxi skirt. Have you found that the quality holds up over time for you? I especially like that their 'Staycation blouse' incorporates softer features (e.g. puffed sleeves, rounded hemline & not a traditionally pointed shirt collar) & is made of ramie (rare to find these days!)

@Jenni NZ No worries, I know it's a long post (seems most of mine are - sorry, lol!) That's why I've bought so many of the SeaSalt easel top (above); I don't want a complete scoop neck for my own modesty reasons (totally fine that yours are different to mine btw - YLF in your scoop necklines!), but a complete boatneck also tends to look too harsh on me (I don't have very narrow shoulders, so wide necklines often show my bra strap). This SeaSalt top seems to have struck the perfect balance between the two - hopefully they don't alter the Holy Grail formula for the next batch!
I love the concept of Kettlewell (finding my colours even outside of my 'season' or trend cycle) but often find the execution looks a little off on me (like when I documented trying those green & orange satin pussybow tops, to replace the infamous orange blouse). If it weren't for @suntiger's recommendation, I would have never have gone back to check that they now sell a 100% cotton maxi skirt too :D
Yes, often we need to let go of something we thought was good in order to make room for something that's even better. Speaking of which, I hope you're enjoying your new sparkly booties now! :p

@bonnie @slim cat Thank you! If you're also struggling to find your 'right' colours, hopefully the UK brand Kettlewell (discussed above) can help you with that too (they ship globally).

@Smittie Thank you - knowing my colours now has come from a lot of trial & error though. I think I have the *opposite* problem to most folk, in that I've always had a penchant for ALL the colours (instead of just wanting to stick to just 1 (or max 2) in one outfit )
But sometimes simple is best, as proved by your hoodie - I'm sure you looked stunning! Chartreuse is an interesting colour, isn't it? It can seem to be anywhere between a neon lime green to a yellowish moss, depending on what it's paired with...

@Brooklyn Right? I feel like the early 2000s - early 2010s were all about the soft spring & summer colours (I suppose it makes sense, if you think about the celebrities most in the limelight then (like Paris Hilton) vs celebrities like Kim Kardashian now). Lots of either soft pastels or neons (with the occasional strong Winter colours, like cobalt blue) that all led to a rather confused & sartorially challenged teenage me

Yes, I'm open to shopping Australian brands too - thanks for the suggestions! As mentioned earlier, it's more due to my own familiarity with UK & Pakistani brands than anything against shopping from other places, lol. You're right, Mombasa Rose has some great maxi skirts (with pockets!) but unfortunately they doesn't seem to offer 'full' returns if things don't work out (only store credit). What is their sizing like, in your experience - made for curves?

Same with Veronika Maine - some gorgeous clothing there (need to be careful about balancing my dressy fantasy with the reality of my 'smart casual' lifestyle though lol) but they seem to favour quite straight & professional lines. Which look very crisp but might 'fight' with some of my softness lol Will go through the site with my future shopping list in hand though, to see if it can plug any of my wardrobe holes. Thanks again!

@notsaf Thanks - slow & steady wins the race I'll keep hunting for a replacement but, since I originally thrifted that orange blouse, I'm starting to think I might need to give in & take @Cat2 up on her suggestion of just getting a few made in the same silhouette from scratch instead. Feels scary but I suppose I may as well try out some tailors whilst here in Hong Kong!

@suntiger Thanks for the tip off - love that the weekend skirt is 100% cotton, & they have it in a burnt orange 'teracotta' colour now :O Very tempted! (Reviews seem to be complaining that it's longer than mid calf on them, but for me that's a plus - the joys of being petite, I suppose lol)
Yes, I don't know why my brain makes up weird 'rules' when it comes to colours, but I'm with you about not pairing teal with black - I'll wear it with everything from chocolate to purple & even orange, but not black! Whenever I tell people I find black to be one of the most difficult colours to wear (because of this matching dilemma), they look at me like I've grown 3 heads

Burgundy is an interesting colour for me - I find it difficult to find the right shade, in that I often need it to be more brown than red. But then when it leans into a more purple shade (like 'aubergine merlot' lol), it feels more of a naturally pseudoneutral for me - although I don't often see purple given as a DA colour?

Ok, back now :D

@Angie Thank you! I've been mulling these thoughts over for a while, but waiting for the 'right' time to type them all out.
Ah yes, I remember you mentioned you were on HK Island - Glenealy is in Central, right? My university is further out the other way (towards Kennedy Town) & I live in Kowloon, but there are some interestingly windy paths & green hills around there if you know where to look (outside of the busy CBD area, of course) :)
You're right about having to wear layers in HK - I actually keep a blanket scarf, blazer & closed-toe shoes in my office, just because the heat is relentless in the early morning (my window faces the sunrise & part of my commute is on foot) but then the centrally-controlled AC starts turning my nails blue by midday (if I'm not sartorially prepared for it) Here's hoping I find the right pair of teal shoes too - although not buying these plimsolls makes me wonder whether subconsciously there was a reason why I was still holding out. I might look for a more dressy or polished (but still comfy) version, going forward...
I found Singaporean heat felt a lot more sunny but their AC wasn't usually *quite* as relentless as HK's. It was a shock to me when I first came here & realised they let the AC blast in the MTR even during the *winter* - but I guess the lack of central heating means the AC is needed for ventilation!

Amazing colours. You know your palette well.

I am loving chartreuse for you (and for me)!

I just bought a chartreuse hoodie over the winter. It is more of a yellow than green. It is a beautiful colour — people have actually complemented me on it ( a first for a HOODIE!)

I think all of these colours are really becoming on you and I think you have a really good sense of what looks good on you.

Yes, to curvier silhouettes on the bottom! Yes to waist-length cardigans.

Sorry to 'rate' your comments & run - I shall be back to reply in more detail later, but for now I just wanted to thank you all for your helpful suggestions!

@Brooklyn @Bijou, I will be sure to check out more Australian brands in the future! I think I defaulted to ordering from UK companies (like Seasalt & Nomads) because that's what comfortable & familiar for me (& I know I'm likely to find my size there lol!), but that doesn't mean I should limit myself in that way (I remember it took me years before finally trying US brand's like Universal Standard & Nordstrom lol). But I remember on my 2018 trip to Melbourne that I was impressed by the fashion available there (I found some boots I really liked from a shop called Whistles (I think?) but unfortunately they weren't wide enough for my calves I bought a pair from another shop there eventually though!). I'll look into what shipping costs are like for the companies you both mentioned (I vaguely remember someone else on the forum had a pink puff sleeve jumper from a brand named Cable? Another one on my radar...)

I had to come back to this a few hours later after some lunch! Very thorough. I also remember the beautiful orange pussybow blouse- and just checked back for the post.
Those Kettlewell colours look great for you. I checked Kettlewell’s site out for me but while I liked the colours I didn’t feel their styles would suit me. I prefer a more scoop neck top and my bust is small enough that I think it is sufficiently modest for my comfort!
It is a shame about the teal shoes. IME though there is often something better. Happened to me not getting olive boots and finding better ones the following year.
Keep it up! You’re getting to really understand your own style I think.

The 4C’s definitely describe your style, I love the duplicates and how beautifully your colours work together. A favourite label that does good long sleeve linen shirts in Australia is Ministry of Style. They have very earthy colours this season which may interest you. My favourite items from this label are in finds below and have been workhorses.

That Kettlewell skirt is great- but not a hot weather skirt! They have one called the weekend skirt that looks better for hot weather.

I hear you about yellows being too blendy with skin. Best with shimmer!

Teal is a great color for us DAs, but I personally don't like pairing it with black. Too much coolness. I like it most with browns and olive. Yet somehow I'll only wear navy with black, go figure- shrug.

Rusty orange/tomato colors, grab em up while we can

I like burgundy as a pseudoneutral too, especially with rust, purple, and salmon.

Great work!

I totally get the frustration of finding your colours. For years and years here is was all black, white, dark blue and grey, but the tide turned a few years ago. Dark teal had a moment in 2019, and I stocked up big time.

I mentioned this on one of my threads, I don’t know if you saw it, but would you consider buying from Australia? Maxi skirts are really trending here, maybe more so than in the northern hemisphere.

I recommend Veronika Maine. They tend to do longer skirts in Autumn colours. They do great design and are ethically accredited. Sister brand is Cue. (A fantastic brand favoured by the lovely Bijou here on the forum.) But Cue tends to go for a more corporate look (think pencil skirts, edgy blazers). They are our best high street retailers (IMO). Slightly more expensive than other high street retailers. Here is a link to Veronika Maine:

https://www.veronikamaine.com.au

Last summer I bought a maxi skirt from a Qld boutique called Mombasa Rose. Very light weight cotton viscose blend. It’s a light teal, not dark, but definitely on the green side. They may have other maxi skirts that interest you. Bohemian look.

https://www.mombasarose.com.au/

I’ll have a think about this some more and come back if I have other suggestions.

Zaoebi, there is soooo much richness and focus in this analysis. Impressed!

HIGH FIVE to craving a change in colour more than a change in silhouette!

HIGH FIVE to making gold your statement metal!

HIGH FIVE to creating a style and wardrobe that works with your climate! It took me decades to figure that one out properly....

I love that you're sticking to your modesty-goals, and getting which silhouettes work best and why. A fab sense of satisfaction :)

I grew up in HK - (went to Glenealy and Island School) - and worked there as an adult as a retail buyer working with garment manufacturers. We go back often because it's home. I know all too well how relentless that tropical humid heat is! But the air-conditioning is just as relentless. You need to layer big time, and your strategy sounds dead right. I'm always covered up inside in HK, Malaysia and Singapore. It's the only way to feel comfortable.

Your colours look great! And I hope you find the right teal shoes.

Hmm @cat2 is that the type that tends to have a little texture on its surface? I think that could work for casualwear but I'm not sure if I'd wear it for work - will have to look into it further, thanks!

@JAileen that top looks well fitted - do you find the neckline sits well for you? Don't think I can get EB here unfortunately, but can live vicariously through you Also love how 'light heather grey' works great for you but it makes me look like death warmed up - opposite ends of the spectrum Grey, pink & blue are the only colours which aren't really represented in my closet anymore!

Your colors are just beautiful! I used to get a variety of colors of Eddie Bauer’s long sleeve cotton tee, part of my winter “uniform” but then I recognized that I liked wearing charcoal best. So then I only bought charcoal tees. I like light heather grey tees in summer, but they discontinued that color. :(

@Helena - True, I think I sometimes see people in the forum creating beautiful outfits from just a limited palette & feel the pressure (from myself!) to be more interesting in the other aspects instead of colour. But I think that's where I start to get overwhelmed - nothing wrong with picking & choosing just some aspects only!

@Nikki I find 3/4 are great when they fit right - with petite arms, they are often either be that awkward bracelet length (where it looks like my sleeves shrunk to just above my wrist bones) or that even worse elbow length (that gets in the way every time I bend my arm)! I'm learning that, whilst I can often get away with regular sized bottoms, petite tops are unfortunately a must for me!

@rachylou Yes, it was such a secondhand steal but unexpected workhorse! I think the reason I'm gravitating towards cotton knits is admitting my more casual & practical lifestyle - as wonderful as that blouse was, I didn't wear it as much as I wanted to due to it being sheer. Sure, this global situation might have us more casual than usual but, even on my 'normal' days, being on my feet teaching all day (or via Zoom) means I need lightweight, breathable & machine washable fabrics that are also opaque & durable...

...So in relation to @cat2's question, I still have the blouse in my holding zone (to be taken to a tailor eventually) but am unsure what I actually wish to do with it. Should I get duplicates made in a similarly floaty but less practical fabric, like silk, or would I still be able to get a similar draped effect from cotton (or any other breathable fabrics)? Decisions, decisions... I'll try it with my balloon jeans in the meanwhile though, to see if I like the 'volume on volume' look. Thanks for the suggestion!
