Interesting and well illustrated with your pictures Manny. Your recent pictures reflect your personality and look fab. I am very experimental and will try a lot of things when given the opportunity. Some stick and some don't. But there are certain core aspects of my style that seem to anchor it - flat or very low pointy heels, knee lengths to ankle lengths, denim, drapey tops, architectural silhouettes as Angie astutely noted.
And for me footwear is huge too. HUGE!

Beth Ann, I really like that distinction. Personal style and signature style don't really change (or evolve very slowly). So...signature for me is short hair (but I change the cut and colour); my silver cuff; blue and white...etc. Personal is jeans, chelsea booties, jackets, sheath dresses, turtlenecks, silky shirts/ blouses, scarves, Breton striped knits. (These are my wardrobe essentials). The cuts change up but the core items remain the same.

But the part that evolves quickly is the "trendy" part of my style. Just what Beth Ann said -- a few trends might become part of my personal style if they end up having staying power. Sneakers are probably one of those for me (and maybe for you, too, Maneera). Ditto fashion backpacks. Usually a trend will become part of my personal style if it fits really, really well into my lifestyle and suits my practical needs. For instance, with your travel example, I'd be very similar (taking the same FFB outfits on each trip) and especially if those outfits fit in really well with my practical needs. If I tested them and they did not work, I'd probably forget all about them!

Oh, yes! I do this, too, although I would say that I have two layers of "style in my wardrobe - one is "personal style," which changes less over time. This includes my love for the era of the 30s, for jewel tones, wide leg pants, pencil skirts. The other layer is the part that engages with trends. This season, I'm embracing Athleisure, block heels, and white bags. Sometimes, items incorporated as trends find a permanent place in my personal style (white jeans, for example).

Now that you understand that you like to cycle your silhouettes and style more often, you'll be able to create smaller capsules and will feel better about moving on when your tastes change!

Maneera, I identify with so much of what you are saying. I've learned about myself that I seem happiest with 3 or 4 favourite fallbacks for each season and each type of activity (e.g. the FFB for the shopping in city; FFB for date with hubs; FFB for hanging around house; FFB for travel; FFB for giving presentations.) And these tend to change a bit each year. Last year's summer faves are not necessarily this year.

Today I'm wearing a FFB from 3 years ago and I still love it. But part of the reason I still love it is that it incorporates items that remain very "current" (cage sandals, an unusual style of sarong short).

I think you and I both like a bit of trend to our style. It's classic at its core but we enjoy the refreshes and updates. So pure uniform dressing like Sally describes is not for us, even if some core items might always be favourites?

Sorry I got carried away thinking about my style and forgot to mention what I noticed earlier....there are correlations between this year and last. While you have changed shoes and relaxed your style a bit you still favour dresses and shorts with similar tops.

Maneera I think you have quite a bit of variety to your style. I do like your current modern sporty-feminine outfits, and yes, footwear drives so much (for me at least -- it's how I update my outfits every year). I also like last years outfits, especially the one with the cross over top and bootcut/flare pants. I think you might find you come back to certain styles, that reflect you. I agree with Una on this point. It's fun to experiment and refresh but to keep a core style true to you.

I actually don't know if my style has evolved at all. I look back on my posts 5 years ago and I realise I was still wearing tomboyish clothes. The only difference is that now I don't wear button downs and bootcut jeans. I wear skinnies and knit shirts. I still wear boots but have added sneakers and hiking boots ...maybe I am actually on trend.

My wardrobe though changes a lot because of my changing size. In 2011 I was a size then by the end I was another size. Each year I went up a size until this year when I went back to the size I was in 2011. During most size changes I got rid of my clothes and bought others because with size restrictions in my house etc I can't really have a big wardrobe. If it wasn't for the op shop, I wouldn't be able to change each season. So like Ledonna I thrift shop and it enables me to change my clothes frequently.

pictures 1 - 3 are 2011 outfits

4 is an inspiration collage i made in 2011..i'm still inspired by the same things.

This is why I pay attention to any post of Angie's about refreshing your style. Small changes can really make a difference as to how I feel wearing the same stuff from last year. It is not too hard to make jeans and pants into crops, semi-tuck an old favorite top, pick up a pair of ankle straps or booties to refresh footwear or search the jewelry you have to find bracelets to make an arm party (all things I've done in the past) This season I hope to explore sporty lux and am also concentrating to pulling together colors that are new-to-me pairings...like light pink or blush and pale blue. New purchases should be minimal.

I did buy a tassel necklace to update jewelry and feel stylish when I wear it.

Lisa - that makes you & me both! Like you, I DONT want to buy or own too many clothes either. Would you believe this: I bought 4 tops at the start of summer that I truly loved and a pair of cropped jeans (the kinds that have a small zip at the hem). I've been on 2 casual trips in the last two months and I've taken the EXACT same things on both trips. All these tops, 2 pairs of jeans and some nice jewelry. So it's obvious that I do very well with few clothes that I love very much. I've already worn these tops 8-10 times, and it's not even June yet! The problem - I have a lot of clothes from last season (the ones I was loving then) that I look at and feel guilty. So new rule - buy ONLY for this season and buy only what you can wear the heck out of before you get 'over' it. I babied my peplum tops last year thinking "Oh, I'll love these forever" but I've not worn them yet! I don't want to go into next season with too much *baggage* ;P Don't be mad at yourself, Lisa.....I know it's frustrating, but this is how we learn.
(PS: Just an idea - if you're not loving the cropped kick flares, could you cut them off into knee length shorts for summer? I'm all into cutting up my clothes so they can evolve with me this season!)

Sally - thanks so much. The alterations keep me sane! I've taken everything to the tailor this season - sleeveless tops got some sleeves, dresses & skirts were shortened, jeans & pants were cropped and a couple even became shorts. Not too bad!

Thanks Olen. I do love dresses. But I like these ones best with heels...or sandals, at least. I'm predicting I'll start wearing them again soon. I tire of the same look easily, so I'm sure sneakers will have their 'moment' in my wardrobe and then I'll move on...back to dresses & sandals. It's just the way I am!

Celia - you have a good strategy. I need to copy it too!

Thanks Laura. Yes, I like to keep my wardrobe looking fresh. Since I work from home, I get to experiment a lot with looks (I'll try random pairings at home to see how I feel in them....kind of like a test-drive).

Angie - you're the expert and I'm glad you're on board with my rapidly evolving style Maybe I'll wear a floaty fit & flare dress today! Freshen things up a bit! These days I can go shopping in my closet and come up with brilliant combos I had never imagined before! (all becoz I'm no longer chasing conventionally flattering proportions).

Seems like I'm not the only one who does this!

@Robin - yes, my style has become more casual this year.....hence more in sync with my real lifestyle. I still love 'dressy' though....I just am not wearing it all the time

@Sihaya - thank you! I enjoy my wardrobe a lot. It's good to know I come across as someone confident of her choices (I don't get many compliments, so I'm usually just dressing to impress myself )

Una - I've done my fair share of random testing! I've come back full circle to things I wore 10 years back too. My style still has a strong classic aesthetic, even when it's casual, and I'm not very invested into trends either. This year I've kept only one thing in mind while shopping "How often will I wear this in THIS season?" And once I have the answer to that, I decide how many pieces I should have for ample variety (for ex in slip on sneakers or jogger pants or pretty tshirts)

Krisnidoux - that makes two of us! I'm learning to feel stylish in casuals too. And I think it has ALOT to do with one's attitude. I find your style very Parisienne chic, and wish to someday look as effortlessly gorgeous as you do. I have read that French women look so appealing & intriguing because they've mastered the art of looking pulled together without making it seem like they tried too hard. That's exactly what I aspire for!

La Pedestrienne- Thanks! I like the top in #9 very much too. Stripes are my signature pattern and currently the most dominant one in my wardrobe.

It's natural for our "uniforms" to change every season or every few seasons. Sometimes a tweak here and there, and other times the changes are surgical. That's why we REFRESH our style and enjoy fashion.

I used to do this a lot. I would love a certain look one season and stock up like crazy. A year would pass and I would feel I had 'nothing to wear again' because my tastes, or fashion, had changed.
Right now there are a couple of styles/colors that I would always wear so I buy them when I see them. Otherwise I update when the season comes.

Manny, I can see an evolution here. Your style now is more sassy, lively, but still with a modern classic flavour.

I think if you like to evolve your style regularly it is fun to update, wear these new pieces regularly and then move on. I would not fret about your large existing closet- it seems moving on you have the right strategy and you are able to pull from and alter what you already have. Great plan to tailor the jeans!

I get it. This is precisely why I don't want to have too many clothes. Period. I have too many of the same thing, many of them going unworn, an all bought in a frenzy of "oh this is what I like right now, so buy a few more". And because I do spend a fair bit on my clothes - well, relatively speaking - I am unhappy seeing 3 $70 tank tops sitting unworn that were bought last summer as duplicates and never worn. In my case, it's not so much that my style preferences change drastically, it's more a case of fit ideas changing, or my body also changing, seemingly hourly lately - lol. I cringed a bit at having bought about 4 -5 pair of cropped kick flares last summer - they are ok and all, but I am a little over the whole thing and really do not need a pair in every wash of denim. Loved them then, but they aren't the be-all and end-all now. Playing into trends like this = not a good idea for me.

I'm particularly frustrated right now - and shouldn't be hijacking your post with my whining- at having a lot of clothes in my closet, and not wearing any of them. I would like different things, but can't stomach the idea of adding in more. And getting rid of things I bought only last year? I feel very bad about that - and mad at myself.

Yes! I love how you have analyzed it so clearly and thoroughly. You are getting to know yourself. I think your wonderful new hair may have something to do with it too. You wear your newfound style very well and it loves you back. You have found a way to dress casually while being vEry stylish.
I have had a similar experience in that i am learning to feel stylish in casual clothing.

Great post, Manny! I feel like my style does not change rapidly. In fact I have consistently liked what I like all my life - it's just That YLF gave me the tools to pinpoint and express it better. I went through a lot a random testing of style personas when I first joined but came right back full circle to myself!

This means that my main problem now is surviving trends that don't fit my parameters and waiting for my styles and colors to appear again.

I love this discussion!

Interesting insights. To me it looks like last year you were a little dressier and this year more casual. Could it be you are more relaxed about style in general now? I love this new look .

Roxanne - my wardrobe is still FAR larger than I'd like it to be. I'm not complaining.....I just like too many things and have accumulate a lot over the years. But I'm finding it a lot easier to let things go now....I have a better idea of my likes and dislikes and can look at a piece and frankly judge if it has potential for 'experimenting' or not. It'll be a while before my wardrobe size really reduces based on this new shopping strategy. But thank you!

Ha! Did you just see my post about your comment on Janet's post? It was on this exact subject - and how knowing yourself so well has led you to make style choices that work for you and a more workable wardrobe. You have had a great insight and made some smart choices for your wardrobe based on it. I'm hoping to get to the place where you are one day!

I've noticed this between last summer & this one. After a big wardrobe cull last year, I noticed that I am very prone to "uniforms" for any season, even though I have a huge variety in my wardrobe. I tend to go back to the same 2-3 looks over & over...whatever they may be for the season.

For example, last year I wore a lot of faux wrap front blouses and peplum tops over jeans, especially flares & bootcuts, and fit-and-flare dresses. This summer, I want to wear cropped skinny jeans with streamlined tops that aren't too fitted but also not too voluminous, and short skirts paired with cropped tops. Im not wearing dressy tops much, though I'm wearing more casual, feminine blouses. I also wear shorts with longer tops (wovens) and joggers with shorter tops (knits).

One reason can be that my footwear preferences have changed. While I wore a lot of sandals last year (heeled & flats), this year I'm wearing a lot more of slip-on sneakers and even laced sneakers. As a result, all hemlines need to be shorter to create more flattering proportions.

I stocked up a lot on whatever silhouette I was loving last year. This year I didn't make that mistake. While I'm still trying to wear the things I got last season in ways that look good with sneakers (I do wear sandals sometimes), I added a few more tops to be able to update my look. I didn't buy multiples of the same style though....I kept it a bit varied.

I already had several skirts so didn't need to buy there. I did shorten some skirts so that I could wear them easily this season. I also own too many pairs of jeans for someone who only consistently wears jeans in winter, so I took 6 pairs to the tailor and had them all cropped. Now I can easily wear them with my preferred footwear choices (ankle strap sandals & sneakers). I still have plenty of full length jeans, so no worries there.

The Lesson: Don't go into any season thinking "Oh, I'm sorted out for this season". Preferences change, our eye adjusts and trends are fleeting. I don't want to feel guilty when a HUGE part of my wardrobe goes unworn because I am not 'feeling' that silhouette all of a sudden. I want to also not force myself to wear something I'm not in the mood for. So I will continue to upgrade a small part of my wardrobe every season and go with the flow.

For now, I feel well-dressed and happy with my outfit choices. It's surprising that while one component of my outfit could be something new, the other components can easily be things I've worn in the past....just that I'm wearing them differently. My biggest success has been with soft, drapey blouses and striped tops. The shorter length tops I wore with flared jeans & palazzos work well with joggers and short skirts. The longer tops work well with cropped pants of all kinds and even shorts. My outfits are definitely moving away from the 'conventionally flattering' category and heading towards JFE. Here are some examples (#1-4 from last summer; #5-9 from this summer)

I think, for me, my footwear choices make a HUGE impact on my overall wardrobe for any season.

Has something like this happened to you?
