How wonderful to be able to see and touch those items in person! The next time you feel tempted to branch out into something that's not "you", hold close that memory ... it'll help keep you focused! Remember that the not-perfect-items-you-never-buy become the budget for the One Perfect Item you do

The thought does occur to me from time to time that I should NOT buy another pair of round-toed pumps, ruffle-placket plaid blouse, A-line skirt, etc. etc. How many times can you buy the same thing, right?

But like you say, you are who you are.

I got slammed in the new Neiman's for telling the shop girl my designer was Marc Jacobs. They don't carry Marc Jacobs. And, of course, we were in the Helmut Lang section. LOL. Helmut is not a ruffles man.

That's a great revelation Una! Like other said, I think of it as foundational rather than being in a rut. To expand, you are incorporating touches of trendy color and shapes on that foundation that is the basis of your style.

Wouldn't it be much more confusing if you didn't have a strong preference for some styles and designers? I think what you are talking about is developing a signature look and strong sense of style. You know what you like (and, of course, I happen to like many of the same things) and I think that is just grand!

I don't think you are stuck in a rut. You have honed in on your style and can now shop accordingly. That is a great point to be at. Sometimes I am in a store and start to shake because I am overwhelmed with the choices.

I don't see having certain design sensibilities as being stuck in a rut. We all have preferences, be it certain cuisines, music, art, etc. Tastes may change, or adjust, or stay the same throughout your life. It's more unnatural to force change if it doesn't come from within, you know what I mean? If you're not living in an artificially insular environment, you will be exposed to many different styles and they may or may not affect your personal aesthetic. Either is fine, as long as you're not closing your eyes to the world around you.

As for me, I love Theory, Jil Sander. It's the clean lines, geometric and architectural elements, and a certain simple elegance that appeal to me.

This sounds like an excellent realization Una. I wouldn't call it stuck in a rut at all. Knowing what you like and what works on your body is the foundation of style IMO. I'm slowly getting there myself but as we know, it's a process. It means we make less purchasing mistakes and use our money more wisely. Well done!

I don't think it's a small epiphany. I think it's a hugely important one to keep you focused. I love the expand my style and try something new, but knowing what I love and what works for me helps to keep me from making mistakes. I made a lot in the last year and a half since I joined YLF. I am feeling more confident about my purchases now because I am more clued in to my style. I'm not afraid to branch out though. It's fun to push my style and try something new too.

Well, if it makes you happy, it isn't just self-acceptance, it's self-celebration! What a joy to know yourself so well. And if your style evolves in a different direction, you will know that too.

Practice makes perfect, right? The more familiar you are with your preferences, the better chance of thinking, "That is so Helmut Lang," and recognizing The Perfect Thing when it's sitting in F21 or Gap or the thrift store. Burn those strong, asymmetrical lines into your brain!

As for a rut... I'm thinking more and more that a rut is a frame of mind - no longer thoughtful or joyful. Signature style is repetition by design, and a rut is repetition by habit.

Knowledge is always power. Now you can try and find great knockoffs of these designers, as well as stalk pieces you really can't live without. It is a great thing to finally have the ultimate clarity on what works for you.

I had an afternoon to walk around town in Southampton and was able to peek into a lot of stores I never have been in - Alice & Olivia, Haute Hippie, Brahmin, and lots of designer boutiques. And I spied so many items I loved, but either couldn't afford or knew wouldn't work for my body type and climate. Still, I had to admire all the floaty boho fabrics and funky prints.

And then I turned a corner into a store that was all Theory AND Helmut Lang, and every single item called to me. If I had a billion dollars, I would buy all my clothes in that store.

It made me realize (or realize AGAIN) that I truly DO have strong preferences for androgynous, simple, asymmetrical, stark, strong silhouettes. It has become easier over time for me to stop myself from impulse purchases that won't work for me. There is a part of me that doesn't want to be so rigid, but the larger part of my style self knows that ultimately I like what I like and there's not much I can do about it.

Self-acceptance? Or stuck in a rut? Either way, I'm pretty happy with having seen all these brands in person, even if I can't afford any of them, because it gave me a real sense of knowing myself better.

Have you ever had a realization that a certain designer really is what you aim for style-wise?
