Soobee, that sounds like a good plan. Time allowing, I'll probably sew quite a few of my wardrobe pieces too. Bags are wonderful, aren't they?

Brenda, I hope to be in your situation by the end of 2012...a few gaps in the wardrobe, but no major crevasses. Taking inventory really opened my eyes. I have a lot of nice tops, but don't wear many of them because I don't have pants to wear with them. They don't look good with skirts either.

I'm glad you're thinking about white jeans too. For me, they will be a big leap fashion-wise, but I think they'll be fun!

That's a great list, Amy. I'm a list maker and having a list of things I'm looking for has really helped me fill closet gaps.

What I'll be looking for:

nude heels
Converse sneakers... haven't decided on color yet
black tank dress for summer
2 summer tops in saturated colors... maybe purple and red
denim jacket
brown leather watch
2-3 dresses
white skinny jeans
woven basket-like tote bag

That will get me through summer. Next fall I'll have a different list. My thrill is my lists of things to find are getting much shorter! My closet is feeling more complete and less full-of-holes.

Some things on my list include loads more fitted tops, most of which I'm planning to make, and I really need to get some more sandals that are comfy. I recently bought quite a few flats which are so cute but don't meet the comfort factor. I'm also going to replace some of my handbags with better quality ones. Oh I may as well confess .... I'm just going to splurge on some handbags even though I don't need them .... I love them!

Ack! Such wonderful things!

I'm sure I'll edit my list as the year progresses and I'll splurge on a frivolous item or two (like my fabulous fur jacket--I love that thing so much!), but some of those items I desperately need.

I just ordered 3 pairs of Ann Taylor trousers. Hopefully one or two of them will work. Right now, you can get many items 50% off at Ann Taylor.

I am so monitoring Angie's loafers when her ship comes in.

My list is very similar to Amy's. Of course it has whimsical, non-necessary items on it, too. :). Like a thick cotton trench in canary yellow.

Dark bootcut jeans.

At least one pair of bright, saturated skinny jeans. (I actually have these on order, but I have a feeling they may not be the right look for me...will let you know!)

Really structured, cropped, very stylish navy blazer.

Ultra-cool distressed brown leather jacket.

Coat I love Preferably two, a dressy wool one and an outdoorsy one that doesn't make me look like the Michelin Man

A nude heel (not too high)

Some nice black heels (hoping to acquire--I'm stalking)

Form-fitting exercise wear, 'cuz what I have is getting really shapeless and baggy

A gorgeous statement necklace, and an eye-catching cuff bracelet, or grouping of slinky bracelets

Silky tops with interesting colors/patterns

Also basic long-sleeve layering shirts for underneath blazers (this is a priority)

Hear you on the black skinnies or straight legs

Maybe one nice casual but dress-up-able dress, and a few pencil skirts

One or two really cool statement jackets

Some sort of casual light cotton fall/spring jacket

Sleek tall boots, unencumbered by buckles or other decorations, in cognac, antiqued leather or maybe an unexpected color like olive green

Some tunics made of nice thick cotton

A few light-knit sweaters--cardis, maybe one longer sweater

A bunch more really gorgeous silk scarves

An excellent handbag, maybe two: a bohemian chic one in brown leather, and a crisp, structured, cream or white one.

A few pieces of really nice lingerie

Some comfy flats in animal print, black, maybe a few others

(I wouldn't even dream that all or most of these would be coming to me within the year...but I'm having fun with this list!)

(Items below are just fun, delightful things I've found online this year...none of which I own, but I still enjoy "collecting" such items. Dontcha love the peacock shoes?)

Good idea for a thread. Seeing as I've undergone several rounds of purges and am now in the middle of rebuilding my whole wardrobe I've recently restocked my supply of jeans, but I'm in desperate need of pretty much everything else:

-casual pants other than jeans
-knit tops
-woven tops/blouses
-blazers or other jackets
-handbags
-accessories

Amy, I'm so glad you posted this. I've been thinking about next year, too, but I thought I was the only one!

I've been lurking here for the past two weeks (too busy to comment much), but couldn't resist jumping in to say "good luck" with your 2012 plan. Sounds like you've done a lot of hard work with your purging and now have a solid plan for next year. As far as yellow skirts go, keep your eyes open for the Halogen seamed skirt in raisin. Lots of YLFers own it and love it.

My fall/winter wardrobe is essentially "done" and I'm looking toward helping my spring/summer wardrobe get to that point, too. Specifically, I'm looking for:

sleeveless no-waist work dresses
sundresses (not too girly)
simple tops to wear with skirts
cage sandals for warm weather dressy events

More later, as the season reveals itself.

Hi Velma! Thanks for the suggestions! I've been considering knitting a finer-gauge sweater; however, I also need to fix some of these wardrobe gaps quickly, since I'm returning to work.

As for the pants/skirts issue, I'd MUCH rather wear pants, but have a terrible time finding pants that fit. I need to buy tall sizes, which aren't in many stores and also need to look for a longer than average crotch depth. Luckily, I can sew my way out of that conundrum. I just need time

Amy, I have only one pair of non-jean trousers--and I rarely wear them. I wear jeans--or else skirts or dresses, when I need or want to be fancier than jeans. So, I wonder: is your "pants problem" a clue that you are secretly a skirt gal?

Are you the knitter? I'm a knitter, too, and I know whereof you speak. Might I suggest that you knit a more structured jacket-like cardigan out of lightweight yarn--sport or fingering? That would keep you busy longer than two or three chunky knits--lots of fun, and useful for work. Maybe something by Norah Gaughan, Debbie Bliss, or Jean Frost:

Amy, it looks like you really only have 2 pair of pants plus capries.
YLF has helped me build a good working wardrobe so there isn't much I need for spring. For summer I still need to outfit myself for DS's wedding and the festivities that surround this event. I have a fall-back dress but it's not the perfect dress I'd like to find. There there's shoes, bags, jewelry...outfits for rehearsal dinner, shower, etc,. all travel worthy.

If/when I am off SYC in spring I have these penciled in:

Athleta shorts for active wear/water activities
black bermuda or cargo shorts
colored cardi

Thank you for starting this thread - I've needed to start focusing, and this is the perfect kick in the pants.

Things I've reached for recently:

- 2nd pair of dressy jeans
- Killer sweater jacket or non-flimsy cardigan in a light neutral to wear with bright or dark shirts. Must have full length sleeves.
- Full-sleeved layering sweaters to wear under blazers and jackets. Light neutrals, orange, lime, red, and citron welcome. Must be pant-length.
- Simple, chunky gold necklace to break up high necklines.
- Slim dress pants. Might have to bight the bullet and order some from Asia... :T

Despite how scary long that list might look to you Amy, I think it's a very concise and organized list. My 2012 items include red dress pumps, super comfy but stylish flats, white trousers, something orange, cashmere v-neck navy sweater, the perfect white button down shirt.

I'm impressed with your cleaning - I'm getting on with it myself! Here's to us!!!

Bad puppy! Oh no! Luckily, my pet fish doesn't do much damage to my clothes.

Sleeveless tops and dresses that I can wear with my brace are #1 on my list- also sandals since the puppy chewed up my favorite pair, and a new leather bag for warm weather.

You ladies made me do it. I'm still trying to decide if this is a good thing, because it's made me want to shop!

I purged yet more stuff from my closet and now I can actually shove the hangars back and forth on the rod. That's exciting.

What's not so exciting are the gaping holes I discovered in my wardrobe. My collection of pants is paltry:

2 pairs jeans (fit ok, but too short)
2 pairs dress pants (one pair of which I've had since 2000 and they are worn to shreds.)
1 pair of black skinnies
1 pair of khakis (too small- should purge--but I need something to wear!)
1 pair black capris (summer only)

Here's the list of items I think I need to start shopping for:

wool coat
trench coat
dress pants (black and grey)
white jeans
leather jacket
skinny jeans
bootcut jeans
denim skirt
tops to wear under blazers
pencil skirts (I'd love a yellow skirt!)
fine-gauge sweaters (I have 11 handknit cardis and 2 handknit pullovers, but they're casual--I need something for the office)
woven, not knit dresses, which can be worn to work, i.e. not short

It's a good thing I found more contract work! Yay! a paycheck!

What's on your shopping list?
