For me, a long-waisted gal, the trend of low rise jeans was a nightmare, even in the 90s when i was a slim thing. Now that I'm a size 16, low-rise is a total disaster so I'm thrilled that there are more and more choices of higher rises to chose from.

Way to go, though, Angie, for giving a new-to-you style a try and finding a way to make it work! How great to always be experimenting and pushing your personal boundaries: it's a fabulous reminder to all of us that this is the way that great style discoveries are made.

I don't get muffin top with low rise, and I can find them comfortable. But they just won't stay up, because my hips are narrow and straight-ish. The worst part (and sorry to be graphic) is that the waistband will sit below the loose part of my belly - the part leftover from having children, wiggly jiggly skin (not fat). Shapewear camisole can help with this, but I still feel horribly self-conscious about it. I'd rather have that part all locked in and kept under control by a higher rise!

Maya, the back rise is high at 11.5 inches - compared to the front at almost 7 inches. Not so crotch scraping :0)

Tanya, I hear you on the bruised hip bones. These jeans are very loose on the hips and thighs so there is no friction or rubbing - which I really welcome.

Sandy and Marianne, you may have a point about the baggyness making the low rise feel extra comfortable. There is no slippage at all - another reason why I feel covered, and less exposed.

Fathenry, I am sure that you'll be able to wear your shirts out for ever more.

Btw, I wore a baggy silky woven top tucked into these jeans today, and it was surprisingly secure. I guess it's just a really cleverly cut pair of jeans.

I saw Angie in her johdpur jeans, they are very cute on her, and looked very comfortable. I wouldn't be surprised if the style became mainstream at some point because they look very hip and fashion forward yet feminine. I think they have an edgey and alluring appeal to them.
I commented to Angie that the jeans must have a very short zipper. We both laughed when she said that they don't have a zipper just a snap where the zipper goes! However they do have a wide waistband, 2 or 3 inches wide, which brings the total higher. The johdpur styling makes it so they won't be tight across the bum and hip, yet they are not big and baggy either. Because they are not tight around the hips, my guess is that they do not need to dig in to stay up, or come back up after sitting, so less muffin top.

This is so interesting Angie. I wish this could work for me too - it would open up the whole world of possibilities with bottoms, but I know it won't. I am very long waisted so anything tucked in a low slung pants just makes matters worse. Plus my hipbones are very, well, bone-y, so the waistband of low waisted pants usually goes right over them which leaves them bruised. So i will admire the look on you, but it is not for me.

Hmmm, interesting. I like your idea of tucking into the low rise jeans. Might work for me if tucking in ever becomes really mainstream again. I have a short torso so I hope leaving shirts untucked stays in style forever!

I'm petite so low rises on me are not as low as average to tall girls. My only problem with low rises is that my hips are narrow and I have to constantly pull them up if I don't wear a belt. They do make my rear appear smaller(:

I could definitely see low-rise jeans being comfortable, especially if the belt keeps them in place. I wouldn't try tucking like this (especially post-kids) but I bet it works great on a shapelier torso. Perhaps the jodhpur style helps with structure in the hip area as well.

Wow. 6.5" would be crotch-scraping for me. The back rise must be very low too. I'd probably have about 5" of bottom cleavage hanging out. I don't think I could even wear that low of a rise when I was at my thinnest.

Thanks for reminding me, Laura: so 6.5 inches in the front and 11.5 inches in the back. For my body - this is low rise, especially in the front. Is it low rise for you too?

Susan, in my experience dressing women for a living, higher rises are the most effective way of camouflaging muffin top. Woven tops, shapewear and voluminous tops are next.

St4, I don't tuck into high rise bottoms. I wear tops over mid to high rises so it makes no difference visually. It's purely a comfort thing. I hope that makes sense.

I am so thankful for low-rise pants because I'm high-waisted and long-legged, but I have a short torso. High-rise pants look ridiculous on me--I think that's a style I just won't ever be able to pull off, but I love the look! Longer tops are, of course, essential when you're doing the low-rise pants--both to balance out proportions and to keep your torso covered! I would love to see a picture; I am very curious to see jodhpurs-style jeans. They sound really stylish.

Yes, I am curious about how low the rise is as well. I mostly wear low rise jeans, because I find it easier to fit my waist to my hips rather than my waist, but then I have be very careful to avoid plumber's bum with I sit or squat.
Muffin tops are interesting. Aren't they mostly a function of too small jeans in the waist? Maybe the solution isn't ruling out various kinds of jeans but rather buying up a size getting them altered to fit better (since our bodies are all so different compared to "standard sizing".)

I used to love the low rise trend, because as a short-waisted petite person, low rises worked just like a regular rise would on someone with a longer torso, you know? But of course the low rise thing got more and more extreme as the years went on, creating the tragic butt cleavage and muffin top epidemic. To Angie's point about tops also being way too short back then, I often wondered why bodysuits never made a comeback during that low-rise era.

In the early 90s when rises were really high, when I tried on jeans, the waistband in back often seemed like it was halfway to the bottom of my shoulder blades!! Eeek. I'd have pants altered to lower the waistband. This is bringing back traumatic memories :)

So exactly how low is this low rise on your new jeans, Angie? Have you measured?

I used to wear low rise jeans in the 90's but was never comfortable in them because tops and camisoles were short and you constantly had a daft up your back and front whether you wore a belt or not. Low rise jeans and pants were a very bad trend in my book - for everyone.

Tam, I don't have muffin top, so that's not the reason I like higher rises. But I LOVE feeling covered. I loathe drafty bits. Higher rises give me a fabulous sense of coverage and that's what I enjoy more than the girdling effect. Now that you can get long tops that tuck well, (and stay tucked well), into low rise jeans with the security of a belt - I feel just as covered. You could not get longer tops in the 90's.

Soooooooo, I never entertained low rise jeans again until I fell in love with the jodhpur jeans I bought recently. Now that I have found a way to wear them comfortably, it's opened up a whole new world of low rise options.

And that's my not very useful bit of forum info. Low rises are definitely not for everyone, whether you have muffin top challenges or not.

Stringy, that's interesting. I have one client who feels the same way you do. I wore a very form fitting polo neck with my jeans. It was long so it stayed put tucked in no problem - especially with the belt. Not quite sure if my woven tops will stay put.

Julie, very good point.

Not surprising. When I was your size I wore them pretty much exclusively. Since you don't have to worry about muffin top or bottom cleavage, I don't see why you wouldn't wear them. I have to worry about both! If I wore a fitted turtleneck tucked into low rise jeans...shudder. Not for the masses, but perfect for you.

I'm curious as to how your top stayed tucked. I'm surprised it didn't move around, come untucked, or bunch up.

I bought a pair of low rise jeans in Milan (the jodhpur-style I talked about in my post last week) and I wore them today for the first time.

So here's the confession: I was extremely comfortable in the low rise and did not expect to be. I tucked in a fitted polo neck and wore a belt so no bottom cleavage. No tugging or pulling what so ever.

I love high rise jeans, but oh my goodness - the comfort of my new low rise jeans really caught me by surprise. Weird.
