Violett, for me, child-rearing has affected my body much more than child birth. The two do not always come together.

Resolutions....I have never been big on them at this time of year. I have a long connection with educational institutions, and my birthday is in summer, so late summer is the time of year that seems most natural to make resolutions. There are, however, several projects I’m in the midst of doing that I need to get in gear on. I’m way behind in my writing, have stopped adding inches to my waist but need to start taking them off again, and there is so much stuff in the garage and in our living space to sort through! I do want to get better at pattern mixing and combining colors differently, but I ust getting back on task with those things is enough for me right now.

Good point about fit! These days I often go out for only an hour or two. There have been times I’ve left a tag dangling down my back, inside a new item, and decided to return it because of a problem like the ones you mention.

Good luck with your resolutions, and happy new year!

always trying: I didnt mean to hyjack your thread, sorry, it's just that it really poked at me too, focusing on fit. I've been so many sizes, and I don't know what to throw away. And what to keep.I'm confused as to what to keep hoping we'll be the size we once were. Any thoughts about this? For me, having numerous children really changed my physique. Those of you who don't have children will not get it. But I guess I'd rather have the blessing of children and a figure change than having the perfect figure and no children.

Excellent resolution, focusing on fit! When I first started building my wardrobe, I kept track of all my items in a spreadsheet (I still do). At the end of my first year of wardrobe building, I looked at all of my "unsure" purchases--the ones I had doubts about but decided to keep and not return. Many of these ended up being donated because I was unhappy in the long run with fit (which was the reason I was on the fence about keeping them in the first place). So I definitely support being strong in this area! I recently regretfully returned a top that was so, so cute from the front but was clearly too big in the shoulders when seen from the back.

I haven't really formulated any strong resolutions for 2018, unlike in prior years. If I had to think about wardrobe purchases going forward, I would say I would like to focus more on different silhouettes--wide-leg pants, drapey tops, long cardis, high-rise bottoms.

JAileen, I'm sorry about your pink coat. But you are making the right decision. If something doesn't fit right, you'll quickly grow tired of wearing it once the novelty wears off and the fit problems become much more noticeable. It is much better to keep up the hunt until you find the right thing.

Lisa p, I have been burned in the past by clipping tags too early. My new rule is not to cut tags until the absolute last moment, right before I am actually wearing the garment out. I also keep clipped tags on my dresser if I have any doubts about how an item might perform. That has saved me more than once!

Great idea to focus on fit. When I wear anything that has one of the problematic fit issues you described, I take it off at the end of the day and put it directly into the giveaway bin. (All items get washed of course.). It becomes an ongoing process in addition to the episodic/periodic seasonal wardrobe assessments.

I like your goals and they would work for me, too. I'm working through my 2017 purchases right now, and have already decided to look for dressier shoes that fit my style (femme-clunky) and find comfortable skinny jeans to replace the ones I've worn for 2-3 years that are getting frayed.

I also like the fit resolution - it is universal.

My resolution will be to work with my existing wardrobe (which is rather large) to create more outfits in order to utilize all items and really wear the clothes I own. To learn more about colours, to find new interesting combinations and to accessorize better. To swap handbags more frequently with each outfit - to that end I have bought a couple of inserts - handbag organizers.
During 2017 I have organized my closet and tossed out or donated pieces which passed their prime or which did not fit well anymore. I have also done a lot of shopping. Next year, I do not have any specific shopping goals. My main goal is to put all the great clothes I own to good use.

Lisa, hahaha!

My resolution: Only buy/keep things I really, really love. I decided not to wait until 2018 to act on this. I returned the pink boucle coat yesterday. I did not love how it looked on me from the rear. I think if it had had a proper lining it would have hung better. Oh well.

Thanks for starting this AT!
Fit is a big deal, and always seems to be something I compromise on, even when I tell myself I won’t. sigh.

My not-so well-formulated resolutions are:
- up my accessories game
- create a weekend-specific capsule
- keep only what I love (borrowed from lisa) This one is difficult, but achievable!

nodding along with pay more attention to fit....in the last year I've finally realized there is a difference between it fits and its the right fit....it finally dawned on me that Talbots clothing fit me, but never made me feel fab because it was the wrong fit...such a subtle, yet oh so important, difference.

The focus on fit is a great goal. I usually have to get things home before I notice such smaller gift issues, like you mention with the bra straps, etc. I always reassess things before I rip off the tags and wear them.

I'm not sure I have resolutions, per se. I want to shop more thoughtfully, but it's hard because I'm impulsive (see above re: returning things, which helps.) I still have trouble anticipating how much I will each for something once I have it, but I have improved at making that kind of analysis of each item. I hope to continue to do so.

I think focusing on fit is a super resolution too. You will be delighted with the result.

Mine is to keep doing things that I had totally written off, such as wearing skinny jeans, belts, gold hardware & jewelry, carry a big handbag, and wear my new glasses more than my contacts.

I like your resolutions - and totally agree and understand your comments about fit. I am very guilty of "if it fits, wear it", and not assessing how it truly looks until it's too late. Which brings me to my resolutions:

1. leave tags on until the absolute last minute - i.e. already in the car and wearing the piece. And even then - keep tags in an envelope along with receipts . You never know.....
2. get organized - a place for everything and keep nothing that I don't love. Nothing.

Good morning, AlwaysTrying.

Make wearing navy and black a signature in 2018.

@always trying:
Going for fitting details is so important! How many times do we all buy something that looks cute in the fitting room only to realize that it shows bra straps, doesn't slide under jackets easily, etc?
Sometimes buying on sale or slightly below budget, then paying for alterations can make all the difference. :-)
I'm working on all my goals by quarter this year.
For 2018, I want to purge/declutter/organize my clothes closet as part of a larger household re-organization. So that's my focus this quarter.

This new year I am going to pay more attention to fit. No more I like it and it fits and wear it. I am going to analyze its fit with movement, take photos and study them, etc. fit is more than just my size-it is how it actually looks and feels. I have tooo many tops that sometimes show bra straps at the shoulders, necklines that gap when I bend over, pants that ride up my legs when I sit. Got to try to eliminate that kind of thing.

This is my biggest one, but also going to wear shoes around the house longer, run up and down stairs, try with different hose, socks or whatever, and even different lengths of pants and jeans to make sure they will work in my wardrobe. No more -ok they stay on my feet and feel comfortable, so they are keepers.

Lastly is to gradually along the way, purge things that are not really working as they should.
