Well I ordered the shoes from Aldo for the time being and we'll see how it goes I always did like a bit of a chunky stacked heel. I love that they are a blend of the look of a boot and a sandal, plus they go with trousers and skirts. Also with the covered toe I could even get away with some sheer knee highs too.

They're gorgeous in their natural shade, too. Perhaps you need to duplicate if they're comfortable ;) (Only joking, really.)

Thanks for the links Astrid. The heel height of the Hobbs shoes isn't too bad actually. It's the virtually non existent heels that I really don't like.

The websites that I've trawled through are Sarenza, Zalando, Rubbersole, Spartoo, Office, House of Fraser, Debenhams, Kurt Geiger, Amazon, Shopstyle. I must have eyeballed a few thousand shoes over the last week!

Anyhoo... I have found these two styles this afternoon that maybe could be contenders. Though both are not red so I would have to get out the bottle of dye, but I like the shape of them.

#1 https://www.zalando.co.uk/zign.....038;opc=22

#2 http://www.sarenza.co.uk/saren.....0000118501

I don't wear optic white anyway. I bet Angie will probably cringe at the thought of dyeing white shoes as I know, you like your whites...sorry Angie!

Or loafers, but they're flats: http://www.aldoshoes.com/uk/en.....6445343-62

And oxfords, again flats and more of a salmon red: http://www.hobbs.co.uk/product.....052H025-RE

Thanks for your input ladies! Lots of food for thought.

I appreciate the shoe suggestions that you've shown, but also smiling a little as y'all keep forgetting I'm in UK :) so it's got to be a UK friendly website for returns etc. I admit that I hadn't considered Amazon or Yoox though, so I can look there too.

Ok, a few thoughts from me. Firstly, I'm not actually at all scared of the process of dyeing shoes as I'm certain I can get a good finish. But then I'm good at painting and I'm arty so the thought of it doesn't phase me However, I have been wondering if I might feel overwhelmed by a lot of red created by an ankle boot.... I already have a pair in burgundy/oxblood, so the colour I'm after is a brighter red...hmmm

Also, although some of the flats you lovely ladies have shown me are absolutely smashing, I don't think I'm overly happy in a very flat shoe, so I think I'm going to need something between 1" and 2.5". Oh dear...am I asking for something that doesn't even exist?? What about an oxford with a slight heel? or a high vamp loafer? Do loafer styles even come with a heel over 0.5"?

Maybe I should just forget about it for now and hope something turns up...PPP as Angie says :)

I love the idea of ankle boots! The last ones (Ara) in Deb's suggestions above are some that Transcona Shannon wears in black, if you want to know about fit, etc.
Personally I would hold out for just the right pair of shoes or boots, rather than trying to dye them. But if you see it as an adventure or fun project, then that's another story!

In theory, I think it's a great idea. But in practice, I wonder about how pristine you will get a pair of shoes dyed to a red. Black is easier - more forgiving. Red shows imperfections, if you know what I mean.

I had red ankle boots in the late 90s and loved them. I wore them all the time. However, that was when pants were long and you only saw a touch of red, the toe box. So if worn with longer pants, I vote yes. Worn with ankle or rolled pants or dresses, I'm more hesitant to recommend this idea. I've had bright blue ankle boots and found them difficult to wear and style, I ended up purging them after a year. This is not to say it can't work. I'm just sharing my experience.

ETA -- I'm talking about bright tomato red not oxblood or burgundy which wears as a neutral IMO.

Diane, this could be a good solution! I did buy laceless oxfords over summer in a taupe that I have now coloured black. Couldn't find exactly what I wanted in black:). Red ankle boots would look very good I think. I have some dark red (oxblood) ones that I love. Definitely worth considering. And if you are not sure about the colouring, you could always get the shoe man to do it:)

Thanks Annabelle and Deb. I'm definitely looking for a pointy toe, though sling backs, or low vamp loafer styles would just fall off my feet I'm afraid. I don't mind the idea of ankle straps so long as they look modern enough and not too mary jane in style. I guess the reason I thought of ankle boots is that they can be both dressy and casual, since I don't want a look that is strong either way.

I like the idea of an ankle boot, especially since you've found one you like!

My thought for you originally was a closed toe (pointy toe) slingback so that you could enjoy that it is a spring shoe, but it would be weather-worthy. I have a pair of one of the Steve Madden lines with an animal print on the front of the foot, and black in the back that would have been great in simple red. I didn't find anything like that, so I thought maybe you'd like a more playful look, with your casual wear. A surprise red leather shoe peeking out.

I am not a fan of dying shoes, in this case. Since red is going to be more available this spring, you should have your pick of styles, coming soon. I would like you to have a leather shoe, with the weather, and for durability and value. Mostly I'm worried that the red you see on a swatch will not be what you are expecting on a whole shoe or two!

But since you have experience with dying, you are more trustworthy than most of us. Give it another day of searching, and then dye.

Thanks Alasse. Yes I've dyed shoes before and they came out fine. I have managed to find a brand of dye that says can be mixed and blended too.

I think it might work; I've dyed shoes before. The colour doesn't always turn out exactly like expected, but you can test the dye on the inside of a strap first.

When Angie talked about red shoes being a look to try for 2015, I really liked the idea. I've often had a yearning for some red footwear. I have one pair of coral red chunky sandals which are definitely summer wear and the style,as luck would have it, is rather suited to the 70's chunky sandals that I've seen coming into the online shops I frequent. However, I would love a different style of red footwear that I can wear that doesn't rely on the hope of decent summer weather in the UK.

So, with that in mind I spent a good few hours last week trawling through website after website of shoes and either the colour wasn't right, the heel too high, toe too rounded, too sandal-like, too wide....you get the picture. I started to get rather fed up as the odd shoe that I did sort of like the look of was too pricey as well. At that point I had a bit of a brainwave and thought, why not buy some shoes in a light shade that I could dye red to my own taste.... I also thought, what about ankle boots and not shoes?

So do you think I'm mad considering this? Have you ever done something similar, to get just what you're after?

Oh, and I'd love to know what you think of the idea of ankle boots? Do you think they would look too much in red?. The thing is I have already got some boots on order that I spotted which were reduced from £85 to £34 which, if they fit me could be a candidate; though obviously I don't have to keep them. Thoughts?
